They are sick and tired of the.wayfpoliUes have been de-graded-by self-secktaff office-Jobbers. The manner In which McBrlde won the Benatorshlp over Dolph In 1895 ought never to be duplicated In American history. It was not cred itable. If the Republicans carry the legislature at the June election the most able, honorable, and influential Republican statesman of the Rold standard persuasion should be senator. He should be chosen by the legislators without paying adollar for any man's vote to be elected. If the Union of Reform forces elect the legislature a man standing squarly In opposition to the gold standard! and for direct legislation should be chosen. "The Union canJIdates for the legis lature have been nominated without the use of money. They should be elected that way or not at all. They should elect a senator without being paid to do it anr more than a citizen should be paid to vote for a constable. That Is the only constitutional way to elect a fenator. It Is time Oregon shut down on cor ruption and "barrel" methods in elec tion of senators. The honor, virtue, integrity and patriotism of the Amer ican people rebel against the Mark JJanna stylo of Doodling a legislature. Boss I sin must not not get its corrod ing grasp on the Union party in Ore gon. Give us a clean campaign, a clean legislature and a clean senator. Charles Sumner. In his lecture on Caste, delivered in 1869, said. The People's bank at Philadelphia, which has collapsed and whose cashier b is committed suicide, is the ono re ferred to by John Wanamakcr in his recent Indictment of the Quay reg ime. "A Philadelphia bank 'capital ized at 3150,000, a private Institution whose president Is Quay's old lieu tenant, has continuously carried a deposit from the state treasury ranging from $300,000 to $1,200,000, while school districts are waiting In 'yaln for school money long past dun Does anyone believe that a band of boodle politicians does not manipu late the Oregon state treasury funds in the same manner, or that a show down of our state treasury would re veal the whereabouts of the cash,? We are not Intimately acquainted with Mr. Rooth.the Union nominee for state treasurer. Rut it is to be hoped he Ulna position to compel a clean up and that ho is free to put an end to the present rotten political regime. There has not been an actual settle -meat of the Oregon state treasury, the school funds and various land and trust funds for twenty years. There have been expensive aud extrava gant legislative whitewashes, but no squaring of the accounts. The state funds that are not used should be loaned out, not over 10 per cent to any one bank, and the Inter est go Into the general fund. Now funds are loaned in competition with banks and private citizens, and said to be used to buy state warrants with. All this Is wroug,and must be stopped. The people are tired of the present condition of things and demand a change in htatc treasury methods and management. There Is a disposition on the part of the present Ohio legislature, says the Republican Cleveland Leader, to take backward steps. This Is evi denced, for example, In an attempt to repeal theGartield corrupt prac tices set, which requires publicity ad moderation In campaign expen ditures. Will R. King, the fusion nominee for governor, and Robt. M. Veatch, the candidate for congressman from this district, were once agricultural college students. The fact that theBe two men, who studied political econ omy under President Arnold, are now running for office on a free silver, In itiative and referendum platform, Is rather shocking to the warm admirers of the departed professor. Certainly nothing he taught them is responsible for their present erratic political be liefs. Corvallis Gazette. The insolence of the above lies In the implication that President Arn old, who was a gentleman and a scholar, would ever have used his place for partisan educational pur poses. There are at the present day alleged educators on so narrow a basis as to convert their classrooms Into a forum for political propaganda Rut President Arnold was a man above such cowardly conduct. As to the "present erratic political beliefs," we would in the greatest spirit of kindness ask the young man who penned the above If in the spring of 1890 he was not whooping it up for Hermann, Mitchell and Ellis on their free silver record? Also would he not today be shouting for free coinage If his party had declared for It in 1896 as it did in 18'J'J? We give him time to answer. THE REPUBLICAN TICKET. The Marlon conuty Republican ticket was the result or a combination of elements. There Is some ground for believing that a combination was formed for nominating Wain foi sheriff and Hall for clerk. This W but natural, as strong candidates contesting for the most lucrative offices arc always liable to pool inter ests. This is no reflection upon either of the gentlemen named. J. ii. itolanu lor recorder we aie also somewhat acquainted with, and consider him an excellent young man for the place. Geo. W. Jones, county superintendent of school1, is a young man who stands well and was wisely renominated. The other men on the county ticket we are not acquainted with. The legislative ticket has not much to commend It, unless it is that it was not all slated as usual. Roth N. II. Looney and Lou Adams for senators, are better nominees than the average Republican nominations. The legislative ticket Is very Impor tant. There is always a irreat deal of money spent to elect the members of the legislature, as there Is an United States senator to elect. Prof. Cummlngs, of Autnsvillc. is an able speaker. lie Is a Methodist, a school teacher, was an ardent sup, porter of Dolph In 1895, is a staunch single gold standard man, and a clean man in his private life. Mr. Cuin. mint's Is likely to prove the strongest man an the ticket. Abncr Lewis of Aumsvlllo Is the heaviest taxpayer on the ticket. ETo Is a clean, conscientious man, who wants todo what Is rightlf ho knows it. Tue Journal does not consider that the ticket as a whole Is as good as the Union ticket which it Ii sup porting. Rut it is not afraid to speak well of such Republican nominees whom It Is opposing as a matter of principle. The telegraphic dispatches from the white house at Washington speak of the presence there of the few most eminent advisors of the president and "assistant secretary" so and so, and Senator MarkQIIanna, but they give never a word uiiout the real sec retary of state of the nation, Hon. John Sherman, and the Impression Is that Senator Ilanna and a few assist ant secretaries of state are absolutely running this nation and If the truth be known the Impression is not far wrong. First Assistant Postmaster General Heath has before him for action nearly fifty urgent applications, from all parts of the country, for the estab lishment of rural free delivery ser vice, but the apportionments already made, It Is said, practically will ex haust the appropriation for the present fiscal year. Since the date coyered by his annual report experi mental rural free delivery stations have been established at the follow ing places: Winter Park, Orange county, Fla.; Albany, Daleville, Eaton and Selma, Delaware county, Ind.; Richmond, Wayne county, Ind.; Rradfordsville, Marion county, Ky.; Rrooklyn, Powe sheik county, Iowa; Mount Pleasant, Henry county, and New Providence, Harding county, Iowa; South Dart mouth, Rrlstow county, Mass.; Elll bott City, Howard county, Ma.; Mari etta, Washington county, Ohio; Greenevllle Greene county, Tenn., and Turner, Marion county, Or. New routes are In process of estab lishment from Pittsfield, N. II., South Rurllngton, Vt., and Knox county, Illinois. I wish to say, 1 am more than pleased with the success of the Silver party move. I like Union; when In the war I marched and fought side by side with Democrats; have since lived by and neighbored with them and we have the same reeds a com mon cause. I counted all good that was for Union; all bad thatwas against It and am inclined the same way today. I was one of the the despised abolitionist that helped make the Republican party. It was then for the people and I was proud of it, it worked for American freedom, Amer ican independence, American money, without the dictation of any foreign nation. For years I -defended the prin ciples of the g. 0. p. while It adhered to the Interests of the wholo people. Then It was a power. The money men at one time refused to loan this money at reasonable rates. Then Father Abraham said, very well, gentlemen, we can get along without your money, ne Issued government money. It took the wings of the morn ing, visited battle fields, paid thearmy, floated the navy, fed the hungry, clothed the naked, comforted the mothers and the widows. It was the best money ever Issued, it put us on a plain of prosperity and raised monuments to our dead heroes. It could have paid our national debt, If not for Shylock's exemption clause, and wo today would haye been free from debt, with overflowing treas ury. : Wo have patriotism and pluck enough to whip all of our cncmles,and love and sympathy enough to feed the hungry of the world. I ask, where stands the Republican party today ? It stands, asking the foreign nations what kind of money shall we have and how much of it. It says to them whatsoever you say on this question that will we do. Foreign nations and the banks want more bonds more debt. I tond many vet erans and the sons of veterans who say If that's the g. o. p. I for one will nut stay with it. They can retain the name. Llko Sampson of old, they will be shorn of their power. They are blind. Their hands are placed on the columns (money) that support their structure nnd they will push the column out and down will go the g. 0. p. and great will bo tho fall thereof, They have dug their own grave and In June the Union party will bear It away and cover It over with ballots, and erect a monument with this epi taph: "Hero Ilcsthe . 0. p." (good old peoplo.) Tho women, God bless them, they are entitled to great credit for the In terest they have taken In tho suffering Cubans, also In the Armenians that were being butchered by tho Turks. United in a common catue for the sacred purpose of pre nring the principles of gov. ernmtnt by the whole people, in fact as well as in name, restoring and maintaining equal ity, under that government, o' -11 classes, we, the people's Democratic and Silver Repub lican parties of th- stale of Oregon, waving all minor points of difference, and uniting for tne purpose ol carrying out I he greatest un derlyinc pri'.cioles upon which we are all agiJed, dc make and present to the people of tms state the following declaration ol prin ciples, and to the carrying out of which we solemnly pledge each a-d every candid He upon our united ticket: First We demand the free and unrestneted coinage of tilver and gold at the present legal ratio of 16 to l, without waiting for the consent ol foreign nations and we are unalterably opposed to the policy nf the present Republican administration in de manding the retirement of greenbacks, and the turning over of the money making power of the government to the national banks, as presented by the bill drawn by the Repub lican secretary of the treasury, and indorsed iy President McKin'ey; and we especially denounce the avowed attempt by said bill to fasten the country irrevocably and forever to the single Gold stendard. We demand a national money, saf: and sound, Usued by the general government only, without the intervention of the banks ol issue, to be a full legal tender for all debts public and private, also a juit, equit able and efficient means of distribution direct to the people through the lawful disburse ments of the government. We demand that the volume of circulating medium be speedily increased to an amount sufficient to meet the demands of the busi ness and population of this country, and ti restore the just level of prices of labor and prodnction. We favor such legislation as will prevent for the future the demonetization of any kind of legal tender money by private con tract. We demand that the government, in pay ment of its cbligations shall use its option as to the kind of lawful money in which they are to be paid, and we deronnce the present and preceeding administraitons for surrendering this option to the holders of government obligations, We demand that there shall be no further issue of United States interest-bearing bonds. We demand that postal savings banks be established by the government for the safe deposit of the savings of the people and to facilitate exchange. We demand the election of UnitcH States senators by direct yote of the people. We demand tho initiative and relerendum system of law-making in its optional form, local, state and national, and the submission by congress of all important national questions for an adivsory voe of the people, until such time as the national constitution shall have been amended so as to provide for direct leg islation. We condemn as dangerous and ur just the surrender, in all departments of the govern ment, to tbe influence ol trusts, corporations and aggregations of wealth generally and the packing of the highest ourts of the land with corpora. ion lawyers, too ready to do the will of their late emplryers, and to set aside valid and wholesome laws passed by the legislative departments of the states and government, upon flimsy pretexts, at the be hests of such institutions. We denounce an condemn the corrupt and extravagant Republican legislative assemblies, and charge that the Republican party, in its eagerness for the spoils of office, has become divided into warring factions, so that it is in capable ol government as exemplified by the condition existing in the office of the state treasurer, there being at this time more than $500,000 therein wrung from the people by the process of taxation, while state warrants are stamped "Not paid for want of funds." We demand that all districts and county officer.: be placed upon salaries commensur-' ate with the duties to be performed by them.
