The Dalles Times-Mountaineer, Democratic The union that was formed by the state conventions .of the Democratic, People's and sliver Republican parties to Portland last week was in every respect honorable and harmonious. The platform adopted was concise and broad enougli for all who are united in the common cause the ad vancement of human rights and honest government to stand upon. It, Is a platform which Democrats, Populists and Silver Republicans can endorse, for It embodies all the cardi nal principles enunciated by those parties, and contains nothing object ionable to any of them. Neither of these parties have been required to surrender any of their princriples, yet the demand for a flexible currency, sufficient to ireet the demands of trade and direct leg: islatlon, which arc endorsed by all three parties are made prominent, hence the union on platform is hon orable in every detail, and is accept able to all except the ultra middle of the-roader, who stand for a pater nal form of government In Its most radical form. And tho apportionment of olllces was perfectly equitable, for tho dis tribution was Just. In view of the fact that the Populists, in the election of 1890, cast the greater number of votes for congressmen in the state, were entitled to a majority of the of fices, therefore they were given four places on the ticket governor, attor ney general, superintendent of public instruction and state printer the Democrats having been the next strongest party were given three congressman In the first district, state treasurer and supremo judge the Silver Republicans having a minority or votes were glren two places on the state ticket congressman for the second dlst rlct and secretary Of state. In this distribution each party Is given one of what may bo called purely political olllces governor and congressmen and each is given rep resentation on the state board, so that in botn branches of government state and national they have equal representation. On this basis all the reform forces may feel that they can unite honorably and fairly, and that they are not asked to surrender any of their principles either by the declara tion of the platform or in the distri bution of olllces. lie Not Deceivedl A Couh, Ilorseness or Croup are not to be trifled witb, .A dose in lorae ofShilo's Cure will sa you much trouble, bold by u. United in a common cause for the sacred purpose ofpre-rving the principles of grv. ernmtnt by the wholo people, in fact as i 1 as in name, restoring and maintaining equn ity, under that governrrent, ol nil classes, we, the people's Democratic and Silver Repub lican parties of Ih; state of Oregon, waving all minor points of difference, and uniting for the purpose of carrying out the greatest un derlying principles upon which we are all ag,cd, do make and present to the people of this state the following declaration of prin. ciples, and to the carrying out of which we solemnly pledge each and every candidate upon our united ticket: ,, First We demand the free and unrestricted coinage of lilver and gold at the present legal ratio of 16 to 1, without waiting for the consent ol foreign nations and we are unalterably opposed to the policy of the present Republican administration in de manding the retirement of greenbacks, and the turning over of the money making power of the government to the national banks, as presented by the bill drawn by the Repub lican secretary of the treasury, and indorsed by President McKinley; and we especially denounce the avowed attempt by said bill to fasten the country irrevocably and forever to tho single Qold standard. We demand a national money, safe and sound, issued by the general government only, without the intervention of the banks ot issue, to be a full legal tender for all debts public and private, also a just, equit ab'e and efficient means of distribution direct to the people through the lawful disburse ments of the government, tVe demand that the volume of circulating medium be speedily increased to an amount sufficient to meet the demands of the busi ness and population of this country, and to restore the just level of prices of labor and prodnction. We favor such legislation as will prevent fcr the future the demonetization of any kind of lepal tender money by private con tract. We demand that the government, in pay ment of its cbligations. shall use Its option as to the kind of lawful money in which they are to be paid, and we derounce the preienl and preceeding administraitons for surrendering this option to the holders of government obligations, We deman.1 that there shall be no further issue of United States interest-bearing bonds We demand that postal savings banks lie established by the government for the safe deposit of the savings of the people and to facilitate exchange. Stringent laws to regulate the operation of turn traps, tisn wheels and all Inning gear in tin wateis uithin the jurisdiction of the stale.
