A Journal Reporter Visits Her the County Jail, ' in Pearl Enjoys Being Incarcerated She Is an Item of Much Expense to the Taxpayers. For the past ten days the Marion county jail has contained an inmate in the person or Pearl Boyd, the Gypsy girl, who is well-versed in crime for one so young in years. She is a study in herself and seems per fectly lndillereut to crime and the in evitable punishment- that lonows each criminal offence. When asked as to her motive for committing the olfenses, witli which she Is charged, the girl with a laugh, will reply that she prefers to spend all her time in jail. Pearl madaherdebut in local police circles on October 28, when she sought protection of the police from the fam ily with which she had been llvln?, alleging that she had been abducted from her eastern home while a child. The story, which was told in a straightforward way, elicited consid erable sympathy lor the girl and a delegation of "NY. C. T. U. women, be ing convinced ttiat the girl desired to desert the Itinerant life she had been leading, lor a more useful future, de termined to provide for the girl a suit able home, in the meantime not re vealing her whereabouts for fear her alleged ielatiyes might regain posses sion of her. Finally a comfortable home was found for the girl with a Portland family whence she was taken, but within a few weeeks she deserted her home and returned to the people from whom she had run away. In addition to the expense involved in the proceedings related above, all of which was met by individual sub scriptions by those Interested in the girl, Pearl has been an Item of con siderable expense to the taxpayers of this county. having appeared twice before a court of justice and as a result made two cost bills to be met by the county. But there remains a third charge against the girl that of the larceny of an umbrella which will add to the expense tliisyoung incorrigible has already created against the county. On Christmas Eve a number of articles of clothing belouglngto Ruth Gabrielson were stolen from the First Methodist, church and suspicion was fastened upon Pearl, who appeared the following day attired In the miss ing clothing. Her arrest followed, entailing an expense of $14.50 to the county. She was detained a few days during which time an attempt was made to have the girl plaied in the Boys and Girls Aid Society at Port land but tills would cost the county at least 325. Finally the parents of the girl promised to leaye the city im mediately upon the release of their daughter. The request was complied with but It develops that the family did not leave the city at all. The ap pearance of Pearl in police court on Dec. 28 last, on this charge, cost the county 814.50 apportioned as follews: b, L. Hayden, 5; Ed N. Edes, $7.20: and A. C. Diliey, $2.30. Nothing further was heard of the girl until Sunday evening Jan. 16, when she appeared upon the streets dressed in male attire. She was arrested by Constable Wain and on the following uuywusuiKeu nerore Justice II. A. Johnbon and given 12Jdays for "an act COntrarv tn nnlill- mnnlc nnil ! decency," The cost to the county In' All druggl its sell full sized packages and will be presented to the oub juis case will amount to 812or$15, at60 cents, Jlc sometime Jn February. l-25eodtf Justice Johnson not having yet made out his cost bill In this case. Pearl's sentence of 121 days expired at noon today when she was discharged only to be re-arrested on a warrant issued out of police court charging. her with the larceny or an umbrella. This will be an additional cost to the county amounting to 310 or $15 and from which no possible good can bo derived either to the jrirlorto the owner of the umbrella from the fact that it has been discovered, and could easily be tcturncd to its owner. The article is not worth more than 32. PEARL VISITED. Through the courtbey of Sheriff V. T. Wrlghtman, a Journal reporter was last evening granted a short in terview with the girl. Pearl occu pies the woman's apartment located in the north-east corner of the court house. The cell Is probatly 8x15 feet and is comfortably furnished with a good bed, with two chain and a stand. Notwithstanding the fact the girl's brother had brought nor dresses and other articles of her clothing, she has persisted In donning the man's clothes in which she was dressed when arrested. And she was thus attired when seen last evening. Her heavy growth of black hair was done up In a coil on the back of her head. She seemed glad to have a caller and when aked how she 'liked her quar ters, replied In a careless way, "Oh, I think they are tine, I wish I could remain thirty days longer" and con cluded her remarks with a hearty laugh. "How do I employ my time? Well I sing and whistle and converse witli those passing c n the street." The writer inquired if anyone had called to sec her since her incarcera tion but he was Informed that with the exception of her brother, Geo. Butler, not a soul had been to see her during her twelve days stay at the jail. "What do you expect to do when you have served your time ? the writer in quired. "Oh, she replied in a matter-of-fact-way, "that is most too far into the future. I would not like to say for fear I might tell a lie." Hav ing assured the young girl It was not his intention to have her depart from the path of truth in making her ans wers, the reporter attempted to get a definite answer from the girl but was unsuccessful, for she again re plied "she might tell an untruth which she disliked to do." The reporter then referred to the fact that her sentence would expire at noon todav and of her subseauent dis charge, remarking "that he supposed she would then leaye Salem or at least the county Jail, "whereupon the girl responded "yes, I expect I will begone for a short time, at least. Will go out for my health." "Do you expect to return to this place?" inquired the reporter. "Well 1 don't know. That Is a hard question to answer" was the girls reply. Realizing that the five minutes allotted him had ex pired the icporter took his departure more than surprised by the stolid In difference exhibited by the girl. This case is a forcib'e Illustration of the need of a girl's n formatory or other such Institution In this state, where such girls can be placed, under proper restraint. The Y. M. C. A.and kinared organizations have been es tablished for the youth of the coun try, but no provision Is made for .the care of the young girls of the land. But what more can be expected of the girl who Is the subject of this article? She has been living with a class of people with no fixed place of resi dence, no homo witli its many com forts and restraining Influence. But that makes the necessity for some steps towards the betterment of her condition more imperative. .During the twelve days or the gins TO CURE NERVOUS DYSPEPSIA To Gain Flesh, to Sleep WelL'to Know What Appetite and Good Digestion Mean, Make a Test of Stuart's Dyspepsia Tablets. Interesting Experience of an In.ianopolig Gentleman. No trouble is more common or more misuuderstood than nervous dyspep sia. People having it think that their neryes are to blame and are surprised that they are not cured by nerve med icine and spring remedies; the real seat of the mischief is last sight of; the stomach is the orgn to be looked after. Nervous dyspeptics often do not have any pain whatever In the stomach, nor perhaps any of the usual symptoms of stomach weakness. Nervous dyspepsia shows Itself not In the stomach so mucli as in nearly every other organ; In some cases the heart palpitates and is irregular; in others the bowels are constipated, with headaches; still others are troubled with loss of flesh and ap petite, with accumulation of gas, sour risings and heartburn. Mr. A. W. Sharper of No. 01 Pros pectSt., Indianapolis, Ind., writes as rollowes. "A motive of pure grati tude prompts me to write these few lines regarding the new and valuable medicine, Stuart's Dyspepsia Tablets. 1 have been a sufferer from nervous dyspepsia for the last four years; have used various patent medicines and other remedies without any favorable result. They sometimes gave tem porary relief until the effects of the medicine wore off. I attributed this to my sedentary habits, being a book keeper with physical exercise, but I am glad to state that the tablets have overcome all these obstacles, for I have gained in- flesh, sleep better and am better In every way. The above is written not for notoriety, but is based on actual fact." Respectfully yours, A. W. Sharper, 01 Prospect St., Indianapolis, Ind. It is safe to say that Stuart's Dys pepsia Tablets will cure any stomach weakness or disease, except cancer of the stomach.
