Thursday afternoon the board of trustees of the Orphan's home held an annual mooting at the home of Mrs. J. J. Murphy. The officers were re-elected for the ensuing year as follews: President, Mrs. John Mlnto; Vice President, Mrs. P. S. Knight; Secre tary, Mrs. E. Y. Chase; Treasurer, Mrs. J. J. Murphy. The regular committees will be ap pointed at the monthly meeting of the board In Feburary. From the fact that the last legisla ture made no appropriation for the support of the school, no assistance was received f rorn state.and the ladles who have had It In charge have been compelled to use the balanco of the funds that, by close economy, they had saved -from the former appropri ations. And, with the outside help that they had received, have met all bills up to the llrst of December. This speaks well for the manage ment as it shows an economized ad ministration and an earnest effort to curtail all expenses. There has been a monthly average of eighteen children In the homo for the past year; there are at present twenty children In the institution six girls and fourteen boys. During the year the olllcers have found perm nent homes for twelve children. The house is lighted throughout with electricity and has telephone connections, being on the state line. The ladles of the board deserve great commendation at the hands of the public for the faithful performance of their duties. How's This! Favorable Report for an Inciease in the Army. Washington, Jan. 7. A cablegram received at the war department from Lieutenant Devorc, who was sent with Dr. Jackson to Europe to se cure reindeer for the Klondike, relief expedition, said that a steamer had been chartered for tho transportation of the reindeer to the United States and it was expected the party would be able to sail for New York i.on the 20th in st. The senate committee on military affairs ordered a favorable report on the bill Increasing the military force of the country to the extent of two regiments ol artillery. The purpose of the bill is to afford a sufficient number of men to protect the new guns and mortars which are being put in place. Senator Frye Introduced a bill au thorizing the secretary of the treas ury to have eight vessels constructed for revenue cutter service; four of them to cost $IGO,000 each, one to cost $250,000, and the other three, $145,000, each. The llrst four are to be used in replacing tho Seward,- McLean, Col f ax and floutelle, and the last three will replace the Washington, at Phil adelphia harbor, the Hamlin at Bos ton harbor, and the Chandler at New York harbor, The $250,000 vessel is to be used at the Columbia river or on the Pacific coast. The bill was in troduced at the instance of the treas ury department. The old vessels to be replaced are complained of as ob solete and rnht for the serviece re quired. SENATE. In the senate, Allen, of Nebralka, called up and the senate passed a bill providing for the sending of represen tatives of different trlhcs of Indians In the United States lo Omaha in 1898 and appropriating WO.00O there for, Some minor amendments to the bill were made. A bill to protect the name and in slgnia of the Bed Cross was passed. Gray of Deleware explained that Miss Clara Barton, several years ago, asked that the insignia of the Bed Cross Society be protected from those who would use it for commercial or per haps fradulcnt purposes. HOUSE. The house promptly lesum-jd the debate on the civil bervice question, and Grosvenor, of Ohio, Hole the floor with an elaborate speech in objection to the law. Grosvenor disclaimed any leadership of the unti-clvll service re form forces, and any purpose to speak for any officers of the government, executive, legislative or judicial. Johnson, Republican, of Indiana, followed Grosvenor with an elaborate argument in defense of the merit sys tem. Johnson and his colleague, Landls, Bepublican, of Indiana, had a hot crossiire of debate and the galleries so boisterously applauded the latter's opposition to the present system that the chair had to suspend the debate and udmonish tiic galleries. CURRENCY DILL INTRODUCED. Representative Overstreet, of Indi ana, has introduced in the housa a compromise bill for carrying out the plan of the monetary commission for the reform of the eurrency. The bill was referred to the committee on bunking and currency. The interstate commerce commis sion has resumed its hearing on the antl-scalping bill. a. McKenzle, president of the American Ticket Brokers' Association, said lie had re ceived affidavits from a number of ticket brokers cnurlrming hlsstate ment that the brokers secured 95 per cent of the tickets sold by them from railroad companies. E. J. Thlele.of the UlinolsCommer clal Men's Association, opposed the bill as unjust, claiming the owner of the railroad should be allowed to dis pose of It as he might seo lit, as would the owner of any other commodity William King, president of the Merchants' Association, of New York apoke for the bill. Monday morning the 3-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Pot ter, of Fairmont, Lane county, was severely burned. She was playing near the stove, and In some manner her clothes caught fire. Ua arrived In Dawson. October 2, and remained until No vember 25, when he started out with two men, who had a dog team. The men walked all the way to Dyea. It took them 2G days to reach Lake Ben nett, where Cole left his companions to attend to some business matters for himself. Pn- visions are not in the market, but nearly every one is tolerably well supplied. Tho Dawson Deonle don't dream there will be any expedition for their relief. Tho people who have nut food to last through the winter get out of the country. They need less than a month's provisions to make the trip to the coast, but they must be supplied for six months to remain there. Mr. Cole also says It Is nonsense to talk about getting a relief expedition to Dawson now. He says it is Im possible for man or beast to take In to that country more than enough for his own sustenance. An army could not transport pro visions to relieve a company If It were starvation there. The Ice on the river Is so rrugh that it is all but Im possible to travel over It, there being frequent jumps of four or five feet for sleds to make in dropping over tho abrupt edges of the Ice cakes crowded in and frozen securely togetner. There Is no room to doubt the rich ness of the gold mines, Mr. Colo says. Even since he arrived In Dawson there had been noteworthy develop ments on Hunker. Bear, Too-Mucn-Gold and Sulphur creeks, and there Is promise or a large yield this year. It Is believed borne of ;theso will turn out better than Eldorado creek. Mixed Up in It. New York, Jan. 7. A Herald dls- patch from Havana says: All Havana Is talking of the frus tration of a plot to kill or capture General Arangucren, in which Gen eral Lee and Representative King, of Utah, were innocent Instruments, Mr. King, since his arrival several days ago, has proved himself an en thusiastic hut most indiscreet Investi Investi gaeor: He made no secret of his In tention to communicate with, the in surgents, and expressed a particular desire to meet General Arangucren. lie stated that he had asked General Lee to provide a guide who would take him to General Arangueren, but insisted that the proposed expedition be kept secret for fear the Spanish would take advantage of it to learn oi Aranguercn's location. In spite of this, the story not only leaked out, but Mr. King was offered an assurance by the Secretary-General Congosto that no opposition would be made to his passage through the Spanish lines. All was arranged for Mr. King and the guide to pass the line this morning and go to the ren dezvous where he was to meet Ara n gueren and Colonel Juan Delgado to night. The guide became alarmed last night. Noticing that Mr. King was closely shadowed by Spanish police agents, he watched, and about 10 o'clock discovered Mr. KIngand Sec retary Congosto in earnest consulta tion. Fully realizing the danger, the guide started for the country, and in half an hour was on his way to warn Arangueren. It Is openly asserted that the authorities made every preparation to follow Mr. King to the place of meet ing and have a force on hand ample '.o overcome resistance by the rebel chief. Tracklaylng is now progressing satisfactorily on the lino of the As toria &CoIumbla Illver railroad. At the Guble end of the line an addi tional forco of graders has been put on, so as to permit of fctcady work by the tracklayers.
