EDITORIAL
The year 1893 Is ucRiiri (tntl nil look

for business, Industry and enterprise.
Tire dark period of depression the past
five years bas left Its mark. Not
many merchants or persons of means
embarked In any nctlvc undertaking,
but what havo been seriously and
some entirely crippled. The new era
will not help all to restore their for

Wc believe that fairer business condi

M'KINLEY ON SILVER.
NO. 1.
From the Cincinnati Knqulrer
rrcsldcnt McKlnley, having tur. cl
himself wrong side out on cue silver
question, in now the great representa
tive or the old -taiidurd. He liar
Stvorn to stand by it uh long as Gr it
Britain docs. Ho will never, never
desert the gold standard until John
Hull tlrst deserts It. no will never
again ravor bimetallism unless On-ut
Url'alu takes the le-id In an Intcri-1
tlonal agreement. Or course this Is
a solemn oath nuvur to abandon the
gold standard. The ltepubl'can pai ty
h!i9 HMiknrl its future unon maintain
ing the British policy of a single gi'.d
standard. The Kepubllcan who vo' -s
for Independent Bimetallism by fie
United States thereby reads hlms.-ir
outor the ltepubllcan party. In c-sr
tain localities 11 Kepubllcan slu.np
orator may bo allowed to speak In
fayorof Bimetallism as being prefer
able to the gold standard, but when
he docs ho must stand by tho Mc
Klnley pledge to support no man who
lions not aot. In unison with Orcat
Britain on tho subject. Ho may favor
Bimetallism by this country at the
same time that It Is Introduced In
Great Britain, but not before.
Now wo ask the reader to read over
and over again the evidence that Ma
lor McKlnley does not believe a word
he says upon this subject, or else that
a few years ago ho did not mean what
ho said when opposed to tho gold
standard. . ,
In 18H8 tho Republican National
Convention adopted the following
resolutien: , , .
"Tho Republican party Is In favor
of the use of both gold and sliver
as money, and condomns the policy or
tho Democratic administration in Its
efforts to demonetize silver."
This resolution was roported from
tho committco on resolution bvWIl
Hani McKlnley, tho chairman of that
coriimlttcc. It was adopted by tho
committco after full consideration
and debate, upon tho motion of Its
author, the Honorablo William M.
Stewart. The national convention
adopted It without dissent. Sonator
Stownrt canvassed several Wpstorn
statos for Harrison, upon the faith of
this pledge He assured tho advocates
of f rco silver colnago that this resolu
tion fully committed tho Republican
party to the restoration of silver us
money. Scuator Stowart nmdo It
known at tho tlmo of tho adoption of
this resolution that unless the con
vnntlon would take that position he
..ould no longer remain In tho parly.
His views were accepted, and ho con
tinued to bo a stalwart champion of
the Republican party during that
campaign.

To Cut Loose From Republicans

The Chicago Chronicle's Washing
ton correcpondent "ends the follow fellow follew
ing: Shortly before congress adjourned
for the holidays Senator Wolcottgave
notice that he would take occasion,
early In January, to make a rpcech on
the subject of International bimetal
lism and on the money question In
general. In which he would refer to
the work of the bimetallic commission
or which he Is chairman.
I havo reliable Information to the
effect that this promised speech ofCol
'irado senator, when delivered, w 1 'ie
of the must scnsatlonnl character. Mr.
Wolcott will liprove the opportunity
Mien p-psentfd n rnrmally sever his
relarlo-is with the Iter ubllcan party
ana to announce his purpos" hercarier
to act with some party which rayors
the frc? coinage of silver by Indenend
ent action on the part of thU govern
ment, He wU ay that there Is no
longer the slightest prospect of re-
storitiif sllyer by International agree
ment. Mr. Wolcott, Instead of condemn
ing, will praise the president for the
sincere efforts which Mr. McKlnley
has mnde since his Inauguration In
behalf of International bimetallism.
Tho Colorado 6enator will deny that
he ha? any quarrel with the president
or with the administration. He will
simply say that, with the disappear
ance of the hopo of bimetallism, the
llnanclal contest In this country
hencerorth will bo a battle botwer-n
the standards, and that ho prerers
silver rather than gold as a measure
of values In the United States.
President McKlnley Is fully advlcd
as to Mr. Wolcott's purpose and Is
norry that tho administration will
shortly lose the support of so able a
mun. Tho president and tho Colorado
senator recently had an extended con
ference on this subject and out of
that conference grew tho silly report
that Mr. Wolcott contemplates re
signing his scat In the senate. So rar
from resigning his scat, Mr. Wolcott
Is now adopting a courso which will
assuro his occupancy of It for another
six years after his present term ex
pires. He wont against public sentiment
In his own stato during tho last pres
idential campaign, when he supported
McKlnley ii"d the St. Lous platform.
While the people of Colorado havo
not approved of MrTWIlcott's posi
tion slnco the monoy issue caused a
sharp division In tho Republican
ranks they havo a high regard for him
personally and aro proud of him be
cause ho has douo moro than any
other man to give Colorado a promi
nent plare In the sisterhood of states
No moro popular pcrscnallty has ever
nppearcd In the centennial state, and
whllo hu Is not nt present In touch
with tho voters there on tho money
question, it will bo an easy matter for
him to bo roturncd to tho scnato If he
will cut looo from tho administration.
It It 110 exaggeration to say that
Mr. Wolcott Is now facing a crisis In
his popliteal carcor. Undoubtedly
the speech will bo u sensation.

The body was badly beaten with rocks.

tacked by rocks by two persons, one
on each side of house and they slung
the stones through tv.o windows,
about a half bushel was ued, which,
with a few apples, bruised their op

the finishing blows came. It seems
that agcrs was forced outside where
he piet his enemy with a shovel,
which wis broke over his head, cut
ting a deep cut to the skull; then the
knlttng work was done. Sagers hat,
which wai found with marks of stone
bruises on and stained with blood, lay
with the broken shovel, about 10 feet
from the house. The murdered man
was round about 50 feet from tho hat,
back of ttic house In a leaning posi

and leaning on left hand, where he died
from loss of blood. About December
13. That was the doctors decision.
All Indications proved that the
murders were rather unexperienced

their lob. with fear they would bo
identified. Tracks lead to tho river In
