Lawt n Walks Out of an Open Window This Morning1, Between 5 and 0 o'clock this morn ing Geo. Lawton, a well-known local character, walked nut of a window on the second lloor lu the Western Sa loon building, comer State and Com mercial streets, falling to tho cement pavement beneath, a distance of about 18 feet, breaking Ills left hip, also tho left unklo besides very severely spraining his right ankle and sustain ing numerous ugly gashes on his hoad. Lawton was found laying on the pavement about 6:30 o'clock by Police Ofllccr Frank Ferrell who Immediately removed him to the Red Front Drug Storo and summoned medical aid. AtSo'clock Lawton was removed to the Salem Hospital where a care ful examination disclosed the fact that his injuries were quite bcrlous. Besides a serious fracture of the left hip, the man's left ankle was also broken. The right nnklo was very severely sprain d nnd his head was almost covered with ugly gashes. He was otherwise badly bruised up. The supposition is that tho man while in an intoxicated condition, mistaking the window, which Is of French design extending to the lloor, for n door, wilkcd out and fell to the pavement beneath. The theory that Liwtou was In a somnambulistic condition Is exploded, tho frequency witli which the man Indulged In al coholic drinks making the former con elusion more probable. It lb uot thought Lawton sustained any Internal Injuries but what he lacked In that way Is more than made up In external bruises. He was ic ported resting very comfortably this afternoon, having luid the fractures reduced and his wounds properly dro:sed. STATE HOUSE NEWS. Messrs N. W. Rountree, Robert Glenn and A. II. The board was at a loss how to procure a copy of a certain de cision that it wMied to consider, and after rinding out that there was no money appropriated ror purcuasir.g decisions, D. P. Thompson was dele gated to make a trip to Portland, and borr"W, If he could, the book from Judge Northup. The dtclslon could have been copied by a private sten ographer for about $2.50. The dally expenses of the board, Including mile age, according to former charges, is about $130. Tills would make an ex penditure of $130 In order to save $2.50. Tho Dalles Times Mountain eer. The abo e was shown to the state board today and D. P. Thompson said he procured a copy of tho opinion at Portland at his own expense, seven teen pages at 25 cents a page. Still this docs not explain why they did not send, right up btalrs to the clerk of tho supreme court and get a copy ol the opinion. The btate board is today considering the opinion. CopeUnd Defends the Theater as Innocent Amusement. "Tho theater is an Institution of God and a helping agent to advancing civilization," said Dr. Copeland In a very nble lecture at the Unity church lastcvcnlng. He was earnest In his plea for the theater and other "harm less amusements" as he .called them. Ho said that several hundred years ago the theater In Greece was an In stitution of the old church; w hen the new Christian church came into power It condemned everything sanc tioned by the old church, regardless of merit, and superstltlously believed that the devil was In the theater. He said that nearly all the more intelli gent and enlightened people and churches nnd ministers had now laid aside this old, old prejudice and ac copied good thcatersas harmless In stitutions. The Puritans were con sistent In their religion. They be lieved It was sinful to have any amusement of any kind or to smile or to laugh aDd hence they condemned tho theater and rightfully too. If tho anti-theater Christians of today condemn the theater they uiut con demn every kind of amusement. They must be conslstant. "I had as soon make an earnest prayer before the raising of the curtain lor one olJJSol Smith Russell's plays, and much rather, than do as I did last winter, offered up a prayre before the gather ing called the Oregon Legislature." There lt something uplifting, some moral, some beautiful story tauuht by almost every play. The yllllan nearly always 13 pictured as suffering what he deserves and tho persons pos sessing the virtues are rewarded. Virtues and honesty and morality are exalted by the Btagc as much as by the church. There arc some bad men on the stage: there are some hypocrites In the church. But for the theater borne of the grandest gems of llteratuer would not have been pre served: .some of the most heavenly music would never have been com posed. Music now sung In the anti theater churches was composed and nrst given in tne tneaters. Tne learned divine wasamuzed that It re quired so many hundred years to en tirely stamp out the old foolish pre judices and superstitions. He also paid a tribute to the social order known as the Elks, the order to which nearly all actors belong. The sermon was a very Interesting one and listened to by a large congre gation. Mrs Holland and Mrs. Carey Martin were heard in one of their beautiful ducts. Talked About Cuba. A small but thoroughly apprecia tive and enthusiastic audience gath ered at Reed's opera house Saturday evening to hear Capt. E. P. Mahoney, of the Cuban Army, make an address. The speaker related his personal ex periences and observations while on the Island. At the close of tho meet ing a rising vote was taken upon the recognition of the belligerent rights of the struggling patriots by the United States government, nnd every person In the audience arose to attest his favor of the proposition. Captain Mahoney went to Albany Sunday morning where he delivered an address nt 2:30 o'clock In the afternoon. He left last night for San Franolsco, thence to rejoin the Cuban patriots.
