New York, Dec. 1. .Captain-Gen
cral Blanco crushed in the bud the
first overt act of histlllty against the
establishment of autonomy on the
part of the Intransigents led by Wey
ler partisans, says the correspondent
of the Herald at Havana. The gov
ernment has for some days been awa;e
that a demonstraalon was about to
be made.
It has been discovered that it would
takcitho form of a secret circular, cal
ling on radical Spaniards to thrawt
the plans of the present administra
tion. The police raided the printing
office of F.1 Commercio and seized a
large number of printed circulars.
They weie headed"Vivt? Weyler,"and
contained a glorification of Wcyler
and a ylrulent attack upon theUnlted
States and general Blanco. Tho cir
culars were signed by many Spaniards
and bore the date '-Santa Clara, No
vember 23." These circulars have been
distributed through the malls In
black edged envelopes purporting to
contain funeral notices.
fjThe discovery was followed Immed
iately by the arrest of Eya Canel, a
well-known newspaper woman, who
is notorious as one of the most active
of Weyler's partisans; Joe Ilcrniida,
tho mayor's secretary, and three other
employes of the printing office.
Considerable excitement was caused
by the arrests, which were generally
applauded by the friends of order, as
giving proof of tho determination of
the government to stand firm In its In
tention to carry out Its programme
and deal sternly with all attempts to
incite violence.
Blanco Keeps Faith.
New York, Dec. 1. A dispatch to
tho World from nayana says:
Asevldenc3 0f good faitli toward
repentant rebels, the government will
appoint Jesus and Adolfo Cuervo, who
recently surrendered, with 100 men,
to super! ntendencies of customs at
Cienfuegos and Sagua. They will
have Important posts.
Spanish officials say that 300 more
men of the Cuervos command will
surrender. Clothing and $5 will bo
given to each of them.
Dauntless Got Away Again,
New York, Dee. 1 The steamer
Dauntless lias again eluded the officials
of tho government and is oil for Cuba
with a cargo of arms and ammunition,
says the Jacksonville correspondent of
tho Herrald.
The Dauntless left this port Nov
ember 19 for Savanali, Ga., with the
schooner Jennie Thomas In tow. The
schooner was supposed to bo without
cargo, and when the famous liltibus-
tor was held up at the mouth of the
St. John river and searched by tho
cruiser Vesuvius, little attention was
paid to the Jennie Thomas. Nothing
was found on the Dauntless, and after
an hour's delay she was allowed to
proceed with her tow. That was life
fatal mistake of tho government offi
cials, for If the schooner had been
warched It Is said that a large cargo
of araunltions would have been found.
The schooner was towed to tuo
mouth of the Savanali river and
dropped, and on Monday the Daunt
less was boarded by Captain John
O'Brien, better known as ''Dynamite
Johnny," end immediately put to
sea. She is believed to have effected
a landing on Sunday night on the
southern coast of Cuba.
Captain O'Brien and Lleutenent
Quigby, the executive officer of the
Yesuvlus, were guests of the sime
gentleman at the Windsor hotel In
this city, at luncheon Sunday, No
vember 21, Captlan O'Brien left the
samo night and boarded the Daunt
less oH-ine jjatilia river on Monday.
Cubans here have been keenlug the
story quiet, but now they are more
disposed to taiK. . , y .
A SILVER REPUBLICAN.
Takes a Hard Fall Out of the Oragonian
Editor.

day's Journal "Truth" tells some very
plain facts about the editor of tho
Orcgonian. How weak the goldbug
cause must bo If there is no way of
defending it. without descending to a
systematic course of misrepresenta
tion, sophistry and personal abuse!
Yet, though narvey Scott Is acknowl
edged to be one of tho ablest advocates
or socalled "sound money", It seems
to be Impossible for him to pen an
editorial statement of any facts bear
ing on the money question without
ringing In ono or more glaring un
truths. Sec his editorial of the 18th lnst.,
"What Indian Answered Walcott."

mints to silver; and it has all the

brands and car-marks of tho stock
which regularly disports itself on the
editorial page of tho Oregonlan.
Among other things, Mr. Scott says:
"Lord Elgin and his associates in the
Indian government bluntly replied
that this necessary audldesirablepart
of exchange .was established by In
dia when in 1893 she stopped the freo
coinage of silver that had been her
financial curse for twenty years from
1873 to 1893." Now, according to tho
press dispatches from which, like the
rest of us, Mr. Scott derives his infor
mation, Lord Elgin and his associ
ates in the Indian government did
not bluntly reply any such rotten
balderdash, nor anything that could,
by any freak of an honest Imagina
tion, de construed Into any family
resemblance to Mr. Scott's version.
"What they did say was to express "the
opinion that India is on tho point of
securing a stable exchango of 10 pence
per rupee." Not that she established
it in 1893; not that she has succeeded
in establishing in now; but that "in
their opinion" she was "on the point"
of securing It. If an ordinary busi
nessman had as little regard for the
truthfulness of his statements as is
there displayed by the editor of the
Oregonlan ho couldn't stay In busi
ness GO days.
Ho says further: "Lord Elgin
pointed out that the pecuniary af
fairs of India and her people had ad
justed themselves to the present gold
standard which India had reached
after a protracted industrial and
financial agony of nearly twenty-flyo
years." "Tho present gold standard
which India had reached" Is good,
when any of Tom Tongue's Grand
Ronde Indians must know that India
hasn't reached the gold standard,
never had the gold standard, and
doesn't profess to bo trying to get tho
gold standard, and that Lord Elgin
never made himself ridiculous by
using any such expression. Yet you
can find -dozens of old dunderheads
right hero In Salem who blindly
swallow Harvey Scott's "statements
of fact."
Then he makes Lord Elgin and hl
associates say that "the ratio of gold
to silver must be determined by their
respective costs of production." A
though Lord Elgin and his associates
would be such mutton-headed fools as
to mako that assertion in a state pa
per when they know that the respect
ive costs of production bear practi
cally the same relation to each other
now that they did when the commcr
ial ratio was 15 to 1 !
But who can hope to follow tho do
vious windings of Ilaryey Scott's
spirit of mendacity? The greatest
wonder Is tbatso many self respecting
