Seattle Is enjoying tlie biggest boom ever known to have conic on without a warning. Things were running smoothly there, bub perhaps with a little more life than other Sound cities, when a shipload of gold arrived from Klondike. This was the signal for what Is today a full fledged boom. It was the bomb that caused a boom. Within forty-eight hours the city was wild with excitement. Enterprises of a hundred different kinds, shapes and forms were sprung upon the people forthwith. A short stop was made at Port Town send, at one time the prize boom town of the Sound country, but today a busted bubble. Port Angeles Is the point of interest, being the city where Uncle Sam established harbor In the daysof Lincoln. This town enjoyed a great boom, and still has a bright future, notwithstanding the terrible effect of the last panic. The harbor at Port Angeles Is a magnlQclent natural port for ships. It was last season and this spring visited by the Pacific squadron of gun boats, In cluding the Oregon, Philadelphia, Monadnock, Monterey, Alert, Ben nington and others, and Admiral Beardslce, who Is In charge of the Squadron, said unreservedly that this Is the finest harbor in the world. This seems like a remarkable statement, but after a little investigation It seems quite probable even to a land lubber. Port Angeles Is directlj op posite Victoria, on the straits of San Juan de Fuca, about fifty miles from the Pacific ocean, at tho head of the Olympia mountains in Northern Washington. The bay is sever 1 miles long, and protected by a saud spit, or strip of land nearly four miles long, forming a front or pro tection to the crescent-shaped bay, thus maklnir .a natural land locked harbor. The harbor is about nine and one- half miles in area, as shown on naviga tion charts. It is formed by n re maikable work of nature, being be hind a large spit which extends from the mainland and the strait, and 1 a reliable breakwater against the ocean's waves. (Six million dollars were spent by the United States gov ernment in building an Imitation of itatGalvestou, Tex.) The town Is built In the form of an amphitheatre, beingaseml-circle, the ground rising on a regular grade, thus giving a perfect view of the strait from any point. A tine lighthouse Is maintained by tho government on the end of the. spit about three miles out from the wharfs of tho city. Many Salem people own town lots here, and while they don't consider their property valuable now, they will no doubt realize on It some day. A bonus of 875,000 has just been raised here for a mammoth steel plant to be built by Pennsylvania capitalists. This Is giving the place new life, and tho fact that a condition of the bonus will require the employment of 400 to V00 people shows some evidence of good faith. Good beds of both iron and coal arc to be had at various points on the Sound, which with the other wonderful resouccsofthe coun try promise great results for all this country. Of course things are and have been dull, and the people have been 11 vlDg on hope and conlldence, but the fu ture Is surely brighter. I notice that Port Angeles people have the same story of an "unusual year" to tell to all visitors, just as Salem operators. It Is an "unusual year" everywhere except at Seattle, where are led to believe that all COmer8 tlie present! Klondike boom Is a regular thing.
