Nbwpokt, A uk.20. (Special corres pondence ) "The District School" was performed at the opera houM Tuesday evening, for the benefit of the First Prpibytcrlun church Dr. J. Jennings, as the prodlpyof the school, got off an oration that brought down the house and stamped tho popular dentist of tdic b.ip country as more than amateur per former. The singing of Misses Ilarkelrode and Strong, a duett "An nie Laurie," was also far above the average of amateur vocalists New port can surpass many towns of larger population when it comes to home talent, and no town we were evor In has a liner class of people. Impropriety of conduct Is generally to be laid to people from tho outside, who come here for recreation. UAV FISHING. We generally go llshlng in tho bay twice a week and get supplies for the table. Ttichilay we li.id bad luck. When we heaved tho anchoroverboard it slipped the cable and went to bot tom. So we could not stay on the torn-cod Hat where Frank Waters and A, L. McUully caught seventy-five of these beauties tho day before. Wc hunted in vain for a rock big enough to hold our boat against the strong tide, and In despair tied up to the piling where the government scows load Btone. Here we caught dozcnB of squaw fish (a large gamy rainbow porch) and mudcats, only to heave them in again. At last we put on some brown hackle ilyhooks In hopes of getting a few tomcod, when to our surprise perch (or white fish) began to bite, and then wo caught three line kelp, which to my taste arc as good eating as any trout. To my great pleasure I looked a line flounder, and tho very next thing tho small boy began hauling in a whopper that almost pulled him out of tho boat, tho lino cuttlnir Into ono hand so It bled. But ho fetched hlmjto tho top and it proved to bo a soven pound llounder, the largest wo have caught this year. Ho was looked on ono or the SBem Gun store troutflies which ho snapped in two and would havo been lost but it kelp-hook about afoot lower on the lino caught him In the gills and ho was safely landed In tho boat. Inspito of his bleeding hand there was the happiest boy In Oregon for his size and I doubt If as small a boy over caught as big a tloun- ,der. The boys still talk about It with pride. It was a most lucky catch and would not havo happened once In thousand times. Although tho tldo Scrofula In Its thousands of forms Is tho most ter WMn affliction ot tho human race. Bait rheum, sores, eruptions, bolls, ull humors, swellings, etc, orlglnato In Its foul taint, and are osnd by the great and only Truo Blood Purlfler, Hood's Barsaparllla. Tho advance tlwery of today that tuber culosis, or eowwpt!on, is curable by proper nutrition, caro and purifying the blood, finds conflnnatlon In tho experi ence of many who have been cured by Hood's Sarsaparilla Heed' WW cure sicH hendacao. 85c was now running In strong we did not stopunttll we hud about seventy-flve pounds of Hsu. So a day that did not, start auspiciously ended wejl. "Bad beginning, good ending," or "all's well, that ends well." I have tlshcdln several of tho tidewaters of this coast but. there is none of them equals Yaquina Bay for boat llshlng with baited hook. The best llshlng or pleasure boats are kept by Oscar Olbson, who Is consldeied by some the best oarsman on the Bay. He is also a good sailor, and It is noticed that parties he takes out get Ifsh If any body does. STATE SOPT. IRWIN iwinhnnn nver here a week and tells me he has traveled In every county except Tillamook. I Judge he knows the lay of the land in Oregon as well nr hn.f.tnr than anv man in it. He was fm- niirtv voars a circuit rider and Methodist preacher In Iowa, Illinois, and on tho Pacific coast. After all that has been said about yellow-legged chickens, the Methodist preachers on the frontier lead a hard life, have rough fare, seldom sleep on feathers and get small pay. When 1 came to Oregon about eight years ago Irwin was in charge of the government Indian .school at Chemawa. The Ktiitftsman under Bob Hendricks made incessant war on him until in 1894 Irwin succeeded McEIroy and was able to compel respectful treatment from the Statesman. He was for put ting Ilendricks out atonco, but com promised by putting Prof. Robb, who was a fellow subject of criticism at Chemawa, in as principal under Ilendricks. It was Lord and Kincaid who kent Ilendricks in his place. It was Irwin's vote that threw MUlor out, .it Corvallls. Irwin is a man ot great reach in some things. Q15NERAL COMPSON'S COURAGE There is a good side to sny man and I think full justice has not been done to General Compson, tho Democrat! member of the railroad commllslon There is not a more popular man at this summer resort than Compson lie is a brave man 07 sea as ho is re ported brayo on land, fcis a batchelor or widower, no ono seems to khow which, but no one asks questions be cause the General Is stlch a favorite with tho ladies young and old. A great big solid military man, holding exalted official position, the hero of a hundcred battles, a man of literary tastes, who has a lecture on the siego of Atlanta in which ho took a inont part, with money to spend, ho Is just tho man to be In demand by misses In their teens, young ladies in tho matrimonial market, widows of all degrees, oven elderly ladles, chil dren and grandmas all dote on tho gallant goneral. Justlco compellsmen to say that yhe general Is a most In defatigable beach-comber that is ho Is always ready for an adventure of an excursion. IIo Is always on tap and running over for a frolic to go clam ming, to go oysterlng, to go crab bing, to go llshlng, to go to Otter Bock, to the light-house, over tho bar, uny where- day or night, and ho Is ready to pay his share without mur muring. No man In Oregon can com mand ono of these seaside sorties, or storming parties, where scaling the plnnuclo of pleasuro Is tho only object, equal to this Goneral, who, great In war, and great In peace, Is still greater in the hearts of his country women at tho summer resort. Tho general's "great hold" is a clam bake; but hole almost without an equal in ortf'anlzlus o bonfire expedition. Thd other night ho arranged ono, planned , tho pyramid of driftwood, provided ; log seats at tho proper aistanco for tho ladies, bought a gallon or kerosene to set off tho blaze, luaded tho procession from the Ab bay bouse to the beach when dusk be gan to deepen, arranged a program at which he had all the women vocalists of the least talent whatever to sing, and the men who could talk or recite were all asked to talk, and the band Invited to play, oh I what a thought ful man Is the General. What mili tary skill to plan, marshal and exe cute such a campaign of pleasure 1 What volumes of Innocent fun he causes for hundreds who would find these hours dull and stupid. As the red llamcs roll skyward, the surf roars on the beach, the driftwood crackles, and children play In the sand, people visit and in the shadowy places lovers are billing and cooing as they have done since the days tho soft moon light ilrst shone on human beings at an age of .susceptibility to Impressions' There aro those who out of political perversity ridicule General Compson's military record. They say ho mingles his name too freely with that of Win. T. Sherman, on his march to the sea, about which Compson has a lecture; that It was Col. Compton, or Walla Walla, .who performed the feats of military prowess claimed by Compson; that four seperate military histories, (Including 'Sherman's Memoirs,") do not contain a mention of his name; that he never was tho bearer of the famous dispatches through the jaws of death, compared to which the hero of Redan or tho charge of the six hundred pale Into mist; I do not know If these criticisms are Just or not, but I do know that over here the general is tho soul of kindness, is universally beloved, makes a great many people happy, and is a courte ous, entertaining, affable gentleman. General Compson belonged to a Now Yoik regiment, was appointed a rail way postal clerk as a Republican, and left tho service ut Huntington, In 18S4. Got acquainted with Pennovcr in his first campaign for governor, and the governor had him appointed a teacher at the Klamath Agency In dian school, whore ho has still a ranch. Ills appointment as postal clerk was "from Idaho, but as teacher he went in under Cleveland as a Dem ocrat. Then Pennoyer made him brigadier general or the state militia. Since then he became member of the railroad .commission and is talked of by the Democratic managers as a pos sible candidate for governor. As such he would get quite a Republican vote. It is needless to say what tho result would bo If the women and children who frequent the beaches at Newport could yote. In his bathing suit the General Is a per fect Hercules in appearance. He is a trifle"cmbonpoint,"but like all fleshy people ho moves gracefully. lean testify to his personal bravery. I saw him perform an act on the Nye Creek (Continued on third page.) - & .A.A ..
