Tlur pic- tore was given a world-wsde dlstribQ tfcn and was generally pleasing. Mrs Olipbant wrote her Mrst work, Margaret ilaitlaod," in ber teens; it was pebibbed and weat throogh three editions in the year she came of age. The delicate husband and an increasiag family very soon drove her to continue tbe literary work, begun as a girl's recreation, as the one means of .subsistence for her husband and children. At one time daring Mr.Olipbant's long illness she wrote a three Tolume novel In six weeks, nursing him day and night the while; perhaps only a woman can fully ap preciate the quiet heroism of this. Left with three children, Mrs. Oli pbant returned to ber native Scot land to maintain tbe heroic struggle with tbe crnetest fate, which here after made up Iter whole life. Of the novels which she poured oat cease lessly from that time until a few months ago, some are already forgot ten, others will live as long as there is aay Interest in tbe Victorian age. It was not possible for a writer so pro- life to be always at ber best. If she bad written less she would have written raasterpoices. Occupied as she was with ber children and ber borne, she eoukl not afford to write mast erpeiees always; but tbe loss of the artist is to tbe honor of the woman. Mrs Olipbant seldom went very deep for tbe subject of ber action; she purposely avoided tbe more violent passions of humanity, and shrank from working out situations to tbe bitter ond. Yet her vision of life was slngulary clear, her observation was wonderfully keen and true; ber char acters are seldom extraordinary men or womon, but they are always men and women. Unlike many of her female contemporaries in fiction, she always wrote tbe purest English. Novel with a purpose were una- tractive, and problems of sex hateful to her. Realistic novels 'she disliked. la a resort i root Xewaort of the state teachers' BMetiae, la the Ocegoa laa. is meatioaed "Dr. E- B. McEtroy, of tbe State aai verity." Horse dustor?
