Over 100,000 tons of hay has been put up In Harney county this year . The Forest Grove mills arc grinding some of this year's wheat and pro nounce It number one. Driver Nanagant was kicked on the head by a mule and Instantly killed at Beayer Hill coal mine In Coos county last Friday. County School Superintendent Kowlln of Umatilla county, says that the school of Metschan has closed for the huckleberry season. "There are quite a number of camp ers there already," says Mr. Kowlin, "though the nights arc very cold. There was quite a heavy frost at Mcachan Thursday morning. The ground was qulto white." The report of the officials of the La Grande land district, which includes Baker, Grant, Morrow, Umatilla, Un ion and Wallowa counties, shows a total land surface area In the district of 8,843,000 acres, of which 15,3C0acres a e reserved, 2,820,425 acres have been disposed of, leaving a total of 5,871,215 acres undisposed of, of which 4,394,001 acres are surveyed and 1,476,014 acres unsur.veyed laud. Uuion county em braces a total land surface area of of 2,028,000 acres; 078,814 acres have been disposed of, and there is yet available 1,349,180 acres, of which 807, 353 acres arc surveyed and 481,833 acres unsurveyed. Of the land in Union yet undisposed of, 75 per cent Is timbered, 20 per cent grazing land, and 5 per cent farming land That Santiam Bridge. No doubt it Is known to some, but It may be of interest to many taxpay ers of this county to know that one of t.lin Innrrnct. nnrl mrwl pvnprmlvp. U..V, .Wl.VJW uu ,ul,ul ...j.v bridges in the county is now nearly , entirely over dry land. At Stayton the Santiam river has changed Its ' channel, and has dellberty left a very handsome three-span high truss brldce almost entirely over dry land. The bridge looks very much like the great steal bridge aci oss the Willam ette at Salem, only It is built of small modern timbers and realy does not look as though the timber are heavy enough for such long spans. The longest span on the soutli side of the river, and which was originally over the main Santiam river, but which is now entirely over a big grayel bar is .'98 long steps or nearly 300 feet in length. This was iutended to span the river but the river has left It. Next to this span is one 50 steps or about 150 feet long, which is also entirely over dry land now, but is on the other side of the river from where ib was intended to be. Next to this Is another 50 step or 150 foot under which the rushing, tear ing waters of the entire river now run. Next to this 150 foot span is the north approach, 50 feet of which was carried away by the Hood last winter with the change of the river bed and has been recently replaced. Stayton people with whom I talked, are very much afraid that with the main river channel under one of the short spans of the bridge and running almost directly towards the main north piers that the next high water will take out part if not all of the north span of the bridge. The people with whom I talked, think that the county court should build breakwaters and make one effort to save the Stayton bridire from being entirely left by the river. C. A SPLENDID AGGREGATION. The Main circus is not one of tho "See One, Bee AH" shows, but on tho contrary is a strictly up-to-date ag gregation, haying associated with it people who are artists in their respec tive lines. Another Oregon Artist For several years past Oregon has enjoyed the reputation of having an artist of national fame In Homer Dav enport, the renowned cartoonist. But this one prodigy has not exhausted ho fertile resources of the Web-foot state, for Salem hus produced an ar tist who is rapidly proving himself a good second to Mr. Davenport and ho is none other than Warren Gilbert, son of Hon. A. N. Gilbert. The young man lias been in Denver the past year and was about to leave for a tour of Europe, when the Denver Daily News Induced him at a good salary to lur nlsh that paper cartoons for the com ing year. Young G llbert', like Daven port, strange to say, has departed from the gold standard ideas of his early training, and Is turning out some yery pointed pictures In the in terest or tlio common people's cause. He Is a silver man, heart and soul, and his pictures will do much for the movement. Salem vs. Ciiemawa. The game between the Salem and Chemawa baseball nines have been arranged to take p'uto at the fair grounds on Fri day afternoon of this week. This will be the game of the season as it will decide tlio championship of Marlon county.
