The Crop Almost a Failure.1
New York State Suffers Scvcrely
Oregon Prospect.
The vvcutlier 1ms been perfect for
the developemcnt of hops, and lice are
fast disappearing. The hot weather'
has given the lice a set back. Never,
before have Oregon hops had u better
prospect and with diligent spraying I
hop men will be able to harvest a '
supurb quality and an enormous1
yield.
More spraying Is being done than
ever before.
Oregon has a larger acreage under
cultivation this season than last and
from present Indications will harvest
a crop of about 80,000 bales. Califor
nia is estimated at about -10,000 bales.
Washington Is now the smallest of the
Pucillc coast hop growing Stasesand
primlses a crop In wetslcrn Washing
ton of nlKJUt 12,000 bales of choice
quality, and in eastern Washington
of about 8,000 bales of Indifferent
quality.
It is altogether likcly.that the sur
plus stock of hops in tho United
States, held prlncipaly by brewers
will have some serious Inroads made
into this year for export to England,
because or tho smallness of the crop
there, the acreage being smallest
known in 20 years, and with an aver
age yeild of 800 weight per acre,
which is above the average. The
product will probably reach 400,000
hundred-weight and the chances are
that this will be reduced by the
vermin, which are reported
plentiful In all the hop gardens of
England. If the Insect pest holds un
tlll the flowering time, the yeild will
be still farther curtailed.
Louis R. dearies, one of the largest
dealers in New York and Pacific coast
liops, cays that, even with the most
favorable crop report In England that
can possibly be made, there must be
large Importations from the continent
and the United States and the brewers
will be obliged to use considerable of
or their surplus of two years ago.
New York will produce about 20,000
bales less in 1897 than In 1890 when
the yield was 90,000 bales. This Is
due to reduced acreage and poor culti
vation. Under the most favorable
circumstances, we cannot look for
more than 10,000 bales, and there is a
possibility of even less than that be
cause of the vermlne which aro alarm
ingly plentiful In all the hopgrowlng
sections.
These lnsect3 are worse now than
they have been since 1880, when the
crop was entirely destroyed, tand if
they continue to Increase during the
next two weeks, the damage will be
great and the estimates for the '97
crop may have to bo revised.
New York price today:
Iienorts have been such as to cause
prices to look up a little, and market
has a firmer tone. The movement Is
oot large"; but If there is no improve
ment in crop reports here and abroad,
a further advance may follow. State

A Suggestion,
Now that we have the spans and
floor of, that most needed Williumette
bridge in good repair again, so that
it Is safe to cross. We haye reason
to congratulate ourselves. But why
could not that gate to the city of Sa
lem and to o'ir county from the other
be made, not only a conylcnlcnce but
also a profitable ornament? By giv
ing the railing a painting, having the
approaches planked with a single floor,
instead of a double floor, which only
causes the whole thing to rot in one
fourth of the time. Have a man
equipped with a saw, a hammer, a
broom and a shoyel, guarding against
abuse of the bridge and keeping It
clean and In repair. Such a man
would not cost over $400 a year; and
it would not only give a good man a
chance of earning his bread and but
ter but would also bo a saving to the
taxpayers Indeed.

Miss Henrietta Woodruff, ex-school
superintendent of Umatilla county,

La Grande has been compelled to
borrow $400 f rem the La Grande Na
tional bank to complete the amount
required to make the semiannual In
terest payment on bonds.
The residence of John Ueadmond,
who resides on the north side of Or
ford lake, in Currycounty, was en
tlrcly destroyed by lire one night last
week, together with all Its contents.
Charles Riley, jr., was kicked on the
side by a horse, at the Kcency ranch,
In Harney county, last week. Mr.
Riley was found lying unconscious
and was taken to Harney. His recov
ery Is doubtful.
The county court of Lane county
has purchased a 10-horsepowcr trac
tion engine to furnibh power for the
county's rock-crusher. The engine is
a second-hand machine, and was
bought for $C00.
Jacob Marr, helped himself to about
COO pounds of hay In the meadow of
William Hanna, near The Dalles, and
paid dearly for It. He was arrested,
pleaded guilty, and was lined $25,
which he paid.
Oat stalks on the ranch of Jonns
Drugg, near Junction City, lme
reached a growth of six feet. The
Junction City Times says Mr. Drugg
estimates that his crop this year will
be 4000 bushels
The grasshoppers that were devas
tating the fields around Olcx, In Gil
liam county, migrated to the west
and south last week The sun was
partly obscured the greater part of
the week, while they were flying over.
J. M. Scrugg, who Is In the Jackson
county jail, held to answer for the
murder of L. O. Quisling, takes things
coolly, and thinks it merely a matter
of time when he will bo released on
the ground of self-defense.
Washington, a Republican county,
has reduced its county exp3ndlturcs
$3,708.08 during the past year, $2,858.80
of tho reduction being on road and
bridge work, Interest charges and
official salaries are Increased. County
debt June 30, 1890, $25,817.77, Debt
Jur.e 30, 1897, $38,150.70. Tiero is
$14,180.20 on the 1890 delinquent tax
roll.
Hop contracts aro being offered at
Dallas at, 124 cents, and an advance of
5 cents, but very few growers are con
tracting their crop. Tho prospect for
a good crop is somewhat better than
It was reported a week ago, although
the hop louse Is multiplying on the
vines of nearly all the yards. A num
ber of growers have begun spraying.
An altercation took place at the
farm of Mrs. Martha McDonald, near
Dallas, Mr Galbraltb, who rented the
farmon shares, refused to give his
landlady her share of the crop, and
Mrs. Mcdonald took a team to haul
In her portion of the hay, when she
was assaulted by Galbraltb with a
pitchfork, and her arm broken. Gal
braltb was arrested on a charge of
assault with a deadly weapon.

More About Renting Two Places for the
Salem Militia.
Editor Journal: Knowing that
you desire to give botli sides a hearing
in all matters pretaining to public
business, I take the liberty to make
the following brief explanation in re
gards to the "Two Armories." Last
fall before Capt. Leabo assumed com
mand of "B" company I was In charge
of the state property belonging to the
two companies stationed at tills place,
and also virtually In charge of the
companies. Feeling that the rent
which wo were charged for thq armory
owned by Mrs. Hubbard was rather
exorbitant in view of the fact that
there were no sanitary accomodations
In connection with tho building and
that the roof was very leaky. There
was a committee appointed to inter,
view Mrs. ITubbard in regard to
making the necessary repairs or re
ducing the rentso that we might be
enabled to do It. She refused, to do
either, bo I rented the upper floor of
the building owned by Yr. Hughes for
the sum of $50) per year and moved
Into It, we were thus enabled to se
cure better accomodations at a sav
ing of $100 per year. "When Captain
Leabo assumed charge of "B" com
pany he moved back into the old
armory and endeavored to persuade
me to do the same. Mr. Hughes then
cut my rent to $300 per year which
was the same amount that wo would
haye to p.iy Mrs. Hubbard. Then I
sublet the drill hall for dancing pur
poses to E. M. La Fore who assumed
the expense of decorating the hall and
plaining the ilooor besides priying us
$3.00 per night for the use cf it thus
we were enabled to sayo from $10 to
$12 per month. As far as the county or
state isconcerned in renting tho arm
ory for the companies it Is misunder
stood. The state allows $15 for run
ning expenses. Tho extra allowance
made by the county court was used by
me in fitting up a rifle range and not
to pay armory rent or to maintain a
smoking club as your correspondent
suggests, noplng you will see the
fairness of my position in this matter.
