RIVER NEWS.
Steamers Albany and Iloag have
tied up at Salem for the summer sea
son on account of the low water.
They will resume operations as soon
as the stage of the river will permit.
Steamer Ruth passed down the
river about noon today and the El
more will be up from Portland, this
evening. It will only be a short time
until these boats will discontinue
making trios between Salem and Cor
yallis, owing to the low stage of the
water. At Corvallis the river regis
tered only two feet above low water
mark. When such a change In the O .
R. &N. schedule becomes necessary
the Gypsy, which now runs between
Corvallis and Ilarrisburg, will be
operated between Salem and Corvallis.

school baseball team met Its Waterloo
Tuesday afternoon when It played a
match game with the Orlons of Van
couver, the score being 10 to 7 In fa
vor of the Vancouver team, xne
Chemawa team accepts Its defeat
very gracefully and feel pleased with
tho result of the game for the Van

champion team of tho northwest.
Owing to the sickness of Graham,
pitcher for the Chemawa team, Ross
or Salem occupied the box for the
Chemawa team and In the course of
the game struck out 8 men while Fix,
of Vancouver struck out but 7. At
the close of the seventh 'inning the
score stood 3 to 3 but some costly er
rors on the part of the Chemawa
team, allowed the Orions to score 7
runs in that inning.
Speaking of the game a Portland
paper says:
"Up to the eighth inning, prettier
ball was never played
would frequently find the difficult
drops and upward waves sent by Ross,
but, through the skillful field work of
the Indians, the runner rarely got be
hind second base before he fell a ylc-
tlm to some dusky son of the forest.
But the Chcmawas met their Water
loo In the eighth. Ross1 arm grew
weary and he became the prey of the
soldiers, and the latter scored seven
runs before they were put out. The
dusky Chemawas fought hard and
well, and when their turn at tho bat
came they scored two runs In the
eighth and shut out the Orions in the
ninth, and added two more to their
score in the last of the ninth."

The Bio Bridge. The work of
planking tho big bridge is about one
half completed and is progressing rap
idly. The work of painting the piers
and iron work of the substructure
has been completed and the painter's
brush has been applied to one-third of
the super-structure. There is no
question but what the bridge can be
opened for travel by tho last of the
week, and all repairs will bo com
pleted in a few days afterwards.

Salem Lady Injured in a Runaway.
Tho following dispatch from Forest
Grove, dated July 0, pertains to Hrs.
E. H. Sorber, of this city, whose
many friends will be pleased to learn
her injuries are not of a serious nature:
"Yesterday, near Carlton, In Yam
hill county, Mrs. Sorber, of Salem,
who was driving her horse hero on a
Visit to her mother, Hrs. R. W. Tra
ver, met with an accident while cros
sing a bridge. The horse shied at
some lumber on tho bridge, and the
drlyer and a little child got out, Mrs.
Sorber tried to lead the animal, but he
ran away and went through a barb
wire fence and cut himself so severely
that he was ruined, as was the cart
and harness. The driver was thrown
to the ground, with such force that
she was unconscious for a time. She
was taken to Carlton to the
train, and arrlyed here yesterday.
With tho exception of a rew slight
bruises, she Is all right now."

L. V. Ehlen this morninir issued
bounty warrants, aggregating $20.30.
At the rate scalps are being brought
to the city and turned over to the
county clerk, It would appear that
all gophers and squirrels would soon
be exterminated from-Marion county.
J. Money today presented 175 gopher
scalps and 70 squirrel scalps for which
he received a warrant for $15.75. The
money thus taken from the county
treasury Is Immediately placed in
circulation and with a few more such
mediums for the circulation there-of,
"better times" would be more realis
tic than they aro now. Warrants
were issued this morning as follows:
