Dunn, of Eugene, last Tues day told his hops, consisting of 32,000 pounds of the 1800 crop for 9 cents and 3900 pounds of the 1S03 crop for 3 cents pr pound. D. C. Herron, of Salem was the purchasing agent. The hops will be shipped to 'ew York city. Tnli Is the last lot of hop3 In Eugene. The following from Portland, from an agent for Mr. Paul Weidner, De troit, Mich: "I closed a 15,000 lbs. con tract with a grower at Tualltln, Clackamas county for choice quality of hops of the growing crop at 7 cents a pound, with 1 cent advance for cul tivating and 3 cents to be furnished at the proper time for picking and curing. I have said before, and I am sorry future developments will bear me up in my statement, every indication of the market Dolnts to low figures this year, and Judging from tho character and tone or the money-market, cash or accommodations from money Insti tutions for any legitimate, business purposes, has never been harder to get hold of, so the farmers who are in want of assistance to work their yards and utilize their crop, will, I am afraid, hardly see any .Improvement from that of last year, as In regard to confidence In either himseir or his products, as far as tho money-holders arc concerned; If any will risk on him or come to his roscue, It wjll certainly bo the dealer, as usual, and this year with far more chances for loss than last year was." The Portland Evening Tribune, April 22, published the following: "It has been rumored In the city for several .days that there Is to be a suit instituted in Multnomah county to require ithe secretary of state to issue warrants upon claims against the state where there Is no appropriation for their payment. The suit Is to be brought with the connivance or the secretary himself, and so handled that he will bs the losing party. He Is to come to Port land to be served with summons here. The pressure for an extra session to provide means for carrying on the machinery of the state government is becoming intense, and it is said that this scheme has been devised to render it unnecessary, for if the courts should reverse their former rulings and make it possible for the warrants to be Issued, so that they would have a color of legality, the banks will advance money on them. Incidentally, the banks will make a good thing of It. The SImon-Corbett people arc supposed to have a hand In this and to have guaranteed its suc cess. The object In bringing the suit in Multnomah county instead of at Salem will be patent to those who are acquainted with tho workings of the political machine now tunning Oie gon politics." The position or the secretary or state is exactly the opposite of what Is stated In the foregoing. lie stoutly maintains that he cannot issue war rants nor audit claims until the money bus been appropriated to pay them. At first he refused to issue certificates or duplicate vouchers, but when It became apparent that the state government could not be carried on without it he consented very reluc tantly to Issue duplicate vouchers or certificates stating "that said ac count cannot be audited until pro vision has been made by the legisla ture for its payment." He maintains that his duty as auditor of public accounts under the constitution and laws Is not to precede the legislature and decide what claims and how much It must pay, but to follow the legislature and decide what claims and what amounts are due out of the appropriations made. He has been appealed to by many personal friends to audit claims, some advising the Is suing of warrants for amounts fixed by law and some asking only that the claims be audited now and warrants drawn when appropriations are made. He has steadily refused to yield to any of these appeals and take the ground that to reverse the decision of the supreme court made In 1871 would be a serious mistake, ne has so stated in letters already published, and in letters not published as will be shown by the following: Salem, April 13, 1897. Frank 1 tv,n. Hoitflr known as "Kid" Evans, has concussion of the brain and has been unconscious since he received the knockout blow. The contest was announced as a fifteen ronnd go. Semichy made a rushing fight from the start, and was looked on as a sure winner zfter the first four rounds. The knockout came early in the fourteenth round. Semichy Evans near the point or the chin with a right hand blow, knocking him off his feet, Evens' head struck the floor with a resounding thump. After he had been counted out he was carried to rhe dressing-room and a physician summoned. It was found that the de feated pugilist was seriously inured. Semichy was at once placed under arrest and he will be kept In confine ment, pending the outcome of Evans' injuries. LATER. San Jose, Cal., April 2.-B'rank Eyans, the lelght weight pugillst,dled this morning of concussion of the brain, caused by a right-hand on the chin, delivered by Matt Semichy. Oregon State Fair.
