The Sardine Creek Hydraulic Min ing Co., of Denyer, Colo.,has incorpor ated a branch at Medford. Superintendent Gilbert has rendered his report or tbe penitentiary to the secretary or state for the quarter end ing March 31. It shows the number of convicts 351; received during the quurter, 45; (discharged, 40; died, 1 transferred to the asylum, 1. The earnings were: For board of United States prisoners, $378. 85, and for labor in the stove foundry $2033.83 making J3368 73. The receipts were 8413. The expenditures were: Sal arias of employes, $1010; general ex pense, $1776.05; photographing con victs, $J4; electric lighting, $205.53; total, $0035.57. Supplementary articles were Sled by the Independent and Monmouth Railroad Company. The former sup plementary articles arc annulled, and the capital Is $2500. The purpose stated Is to expend the Independence ami Monmouth line to Falls City and Salem. Deeds wore executed by R. Living stone, as administrator of the Ken neth Macleay estate, conveying to A. F. Schultz the Jefferson mills for 58OOO. Another piece of Jefferson realty for $3H, and another for 87S23, wore tiled In the county recorder's otllce today. The original patent to Uriah Whit ney, for a section of land near Stay ton, signed by President Buchanan, was Hied In the county recorder's otlicc. May for appellant. Attor Gonorul Idloman and District Attor ney S. L. Hayden for respondent. The complaint in this case was tiled on or about the 22nd day of July, 1895. Summons was Issued in tho action and duly served upon the respondent, and a temporary Injunction granted to restrain rospondeuts from tearing out theappellant's toll-gate. The re spondent, Tillamook county, appeared and tiled demurrer to tho complaint upon the grounds that it did not con tain tacts fiumcioni 10 constitute a cause of suit. It doe not appear from the record that tho respondent, MIzner, uppeared,but ho was regarded as having appeared. The circuit courc, sustained the demurrer and the appellant stood upon the complaint. T.Rioeman observed a bright light in Mr. Wright's apartment. An Inves tigation of tbe premises revealed a fire tbat was slowly burning at a noint near the door connect I Bg the,1 kitchen with the dining room. He immediately awakened Mr. and Mrs. Wright and notified tbe fire depart ment by means of'.a neighbor 'sStele pbone. Mr. RIneroan then returned to Mr. Wright's residence and assisted in extinguishing the flames, which was accomplished before tbe arrival of the tire department. How the lire was started will re main a mystery, but the perpetrators of such dastardly work should be fer reted out and severely dealt with. An attempt was made on Friday night, the 2nd Inst, but it also proved unsuccessful so far as accomplishing the results hoped for, although the , wood-work was badly charred. THE LSSURANCE.
