There was only one way to defeat the re-election of Senator Mitchell: there was only one way to prevent the passage of reform measures abolishing the commissions and other uele hamlcta? on the slate, and that was to prevent organization. The personal enemies of the senator and the men profiting by the uhjIow commissions have gained a victory." Oregon City Pross. The only difficulty with the above from Senator ilrownell's local paper Is bllilb I1UUIIJ ail me unjion uuiuuviib enterprise. There were in Oregon several thousand young women and young men out of employment. At Portland a thousand young women had responded to a single advertise ment for a copyist, at J10 a month for thirteen hours work a day. The speaker regretted that the young peo ple of Oregon should ever find them selves in such a condition. Mrs. Pbilbrook now offered a resol ution for a nominating committee of three to report to this meetlcg of sol iciting committee. Medames Lord, Pbilbrook and Adams were named as the committee and retired to consult. Hun. John Minto was called upon and made a few remarks. The committee reported following names as a soliciting cemmittee: THK SOLICITING CXMUrTTEE Mrs. 11. W. Meyers, JIrs It. a. Wal lace, Mr . Wui. Brown, Mrs. Reuben Lee, 3Irs. H. II. Aitiuug ins more tveujit guts wasu Thoenorgyand Intelligence shown by Mrs. Govornor Lord In uonnoatlon with oyster plautlngnnd (lax culture In Orogon Is highly commendable. If thoro were only many suoh women lu high places the Uvea or the people would be easier and happier. Mrs Ionl has succeeded In the transplant ing of Eastern oysters lu Yaqulua bay and Is entitled to all the credit In connection therewith, for she origi nated the Idea und promoted and di rected the work. The oysters nro their llux tibrc mill In Salem, and we horeby endone the practical action of the women of Oregon In their ef forts to develop the flax and hemp fi bre Industry In the state of Oregon, and wo pledge ourselves to co-operate with the aoclatlou by subscribing for stock in the association." Mr. Slolz moved that when the meeting adjourn It be to next Wed nesday evening, which was carried, and the W. C. T. U. rooms, on Court 6 treat, named us the place, but, in view of the growing Interest In the movemonl, a larger hall may be se lected, of which change due notice will be given. The canvassing committee Is ex peeled to hold a meeting early next week to lay otf their several working districts und formulate a business method of prosecuting their labors. Salem will have cause for sincere congratulations if the new mill Is founded within Its borders and accom plishes all that was reasonably prom ised for It last night. Tbe Grants Pass Oreroa Minior Journal thinks tbe trae spirit of the legislature was disclosed by tbe ap pointment of 7 clerks in tbe senate and tbe draughting of an appropria tion bill carrying over tl ,409,0m and including extraTasant worisioa for everTHseless comBils&toa and state- supported institution, and in tbe at tempt of tbe Benson booie. Including tbe speaker bimself, to beslcnr grossly extravagant compensation oo toe clerks and pages appointed. The measure introduced by Senator Har mon of tbe 3IItchell push to increase not decrease tbe salary of the de puty county clerk (himself; and of the deputy sheriff, both of this county, Is an apt Illustration of tbe economical spirit of the Republican legislators. Another rain lies in the assurance tbat the failure of tbe appropriation bill, with the consequence that every state expenditure must come before the next legislature hopefully one more faithful to pledges and promises than the last for approval, will tend to -an economical administration of tatc affairs. We think, therefore, that the people of the state can well view tberocalled "hold-up" with com placency and thank God that they are well rid of an arrant set of sham re formers. bastaess, gseraBy coae aner iae '-"T f, mttr ,-.. w,iwwia lilary oeleiies tad writer is dead. kfeftl KJ!mrT7? . xr iUim aad 7 inr ial iBTiutioo were wajssFeun"' :-.. , " r"? -,., tk-i Wi-A-, Mn.Gor.
