Editoii Joounal: A Rood deal has been said lately about the improve ment of our roads and various plan haye been suggested for that end, but most of them seem to me to be too ex pensive for the present condition of thecountrv. Ono thing seems to be overlooked to a great extent and which Is the first requisite for a good road, and that is thoiough drainage. The average road supervisor thinks ho has done his whole duty when ho has scraped up a pile of dirt in tho middle of tho road and left a pond of water on cither sido of it, or when ho has plowed a six Inch ditch on cither side to carry tho water to the low part of tlio road. Road supervisors ought to be authorized to dig ditches through adjoining land where it Is necessary to afford proper drainage for the road, and whoic necessary an engineer hhould bo employed to survey these dltchoH m that Uiy would bi properly placed In do thg inoct good. If tlio roads won pioperly drained thoy would be fairly passable all winter for light trailic especially if broad tired wagons wore used. After being thoroughly drained, then other improvements could be mnde n the needs of the country required. It would not only mako the roads better but It would be a lastng benefit to the adjoining land. I think If road super visors were appointed for several years subject to removal for cause, it would be hotter, A supervisor docs what ho thinks will do while his time lasts, the next one comes along and docs the 6iimo or perhaps he undoes what his predecessor has done. It would bo well If our legislators would consider this matter, and not try to pass any expensive road im provement law, which I think would be futile. J. F. D. SAMPLES.
