A. literary and de bating society last evening 3Iax 0. Buren was elected president of the society to till the vacancy caused by the resignation of J. W. Reynolds. Thesublect for discussion was "Re solved, That caplUil punishment should be abolished." It was warmly discussed, many good points being presented pro and con but a decision was rendered favoring the negative. The society will debate next Friday evening on the subject "Resolved, that crime decreases with the advance of civilization." The students of the blind school last. evening held a very Interesting meeting whpn tlw eyer debatable sub ject "Resolved, That, lire Is more destructive than water," was thor oughly dlscnssed. The young people .had spent considerable time in pre paring for the debate and were well supplied with logical and convincing arguments. The decision was given to the negative, the leader of which was Miss Maude Potter. Considerable ability as a careful debator was ex hibited In 3Ilss Slary Roberts who lead the aftirmatlve. "Resolved, That capital punishment should be abolished" was the subject of an Intensely interesting debate that was had at the regular meeting of the W. U. Phllodnrian literary society last evening. The young de lators had spent considerable time In gathering valuable matter and the discussion became quite lively. Carl i. Morris lead the aQlrmatlve in a skillful manner and by his logic and eloquence, made many points.
