Corkei, played by tho mlnlstrels two years ago. Rev. J. N Denlson. one of the most. prominent ministers' of the Methodist church on the Pacific coast, died at Grants Pass Wednesday night. The reverend gentleman had been suffer. lng from a complication of diseases tor several weeks . but the immediate cause of his death was heart failure. Rev. Denlson has been nromlnent.lv connected with the Oregon Methodist church ifor years and bis untimely death will be a great loss to the church. Itcv. Denlson was a half-brother of Miss Abble Mills, or this city. Buner- Intendent of the Salem hospital. At 1.40 p. m. Wednesday. Miss Mills re ceived a dispatch from Grants Pass announcing that Mr. Denlson could not possibly recover. At 11 o'clock this morning she received another dispatch announcing his death which occurred last night. The parents of the deceased left Hartford, Conn., In Dec. 1849 for Sa lem, Ore., coming yla steamer around Cape Horn. The deceased was born on ship-board Just as they entered upon the Pacific Ocean, Christmas day, Dec. 25, 1850. His father died when the deceased was only nine weeks old and his .remains were given a grave In the deep. They arrived In Salem early In 1805. A few months later they removed from Salem, settl ing near Brownsville. The son wn 6ent to Willamette University where ho prepared himself for the ministry. Shortly beroro graduation, Mr. Denl son went east to attend thn T)row Theolpglcal school located in New Jersey. While there ho received four diplomas. Havlnc completed bis course, Mr. Denlson returned to Salem and received the degrees A. M., D. D., ana l. l. d. He has served as pastor in some of tho largest churches In Oregon and uusmugion, me cnurciics and pe riods of his pastorates being as fol lows: Century M.E.,or East Portland, 1878-1879; Salem M. E.. 1879-1883: Se attle First church, 1883-1880: Port Pownsend, 1880.1890. In 1890 he took chargo of Portland hospital, In that capacity ho served ror 10 months. He then served as pastor St. Paul's M- E. church, or Portland, In 1893. In 1894 1805 ho was pastor or the East Port land Centenary church, and In tho rail or 1895 removed to Grants Pass. where ho served as pastor or tho church there until September 1890. The deceased was offered a fellowship In narvaid university, which he intended to accept had he recovered rrom his late illness. He has been a trustee of Willamette Uni versity for several years. He leaves a wifonnd three sons, viz: Willnrd.Aur- tbur nnd John. Miss Abble Miles of J Tht big three of the regulars: eon, Lake and Som'ers.
