Jackets One-Third Off, T. flolverson. DEATHS. A Polk County Pioneer Dead. Salem Mail Contractor Dies Quite Suddenly. , .lames II. Hiumett, a pioneer of Polk county, aged alxuit f0, died at his home three miles west of Salem, January 7, after a short illness. He leaves a wife, twosonsand two daugh ters. The burial took place from the residence, at ena cemetery at 10 a. in Friday. Deceased was a member of the Presbyterian church and United workmen. He was well and favorably known at Salem. SCON' ILL. At his home in South Salem, Tlitiisday, January 7, J8l7, after an Illness of four days. Al. Seovell, aged about 20 years. AM.1KSCOVII.L was a native of Salem, and died at the homo of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Scovlll, Thursday evening at 7 o'clock, after a short illness. De ceased was a mall carrier and con tractor and was well known lu this city. His funeral will Iw from the house at 10 a. in. Saturday, burial In Rural cemetery. JOSEPH. At tho family homo In this city, on Twelfth near Chemck cta street, at 8:30 a. m. this morn ing. Friday, Jan. 8 1897, D. V. Joseph, ogcd,77 years, 0 months and 20 days. Deceased was born in Newport, Knglund, March, 12th. 1811 In 1848 he was united. In marriage with Miss Hannah Davis, lu Liverpool. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph removed to Amcrlci In 1810, settling In Salem, Ohio. Prom thence ho removed to New York, New Jersey, Wisconsin, and Indiana resid ing In each state for dllllerent periods. In 18U2 they came to Or. scttllngatSalcm where they have since reslded,Mr. Joseph following nisoccu patlon, that of a stone masoii, for scycrol years, when ho established a small grocery store on Twelfth street, adjoining Ills residence, which ho has conducted until recently. Deceased was taken 111 about six months ago with trouble originating In his glands. For the past three months he has been bedfast, suffering CNcrutlatlng pain. Tho trouble ter minated in cancer. Mr. Joseph was a devout Christian, haying united with the First Presby terian church, at an early age. His last words were: "1 trust wholly In the Lord." Mr. Joseph was a Mason. Funeral services will bo held from tho resilience, on Twelfth street, at 2 p. in. Saturday, conducted by Rev. Win. Steele, pastor of the First Pres byterian church.
