Jones Unlay learned further particulars re garding the Insurance of tho "Capital School Uullding" that was located nine mile" south of this city, that burned Tuesday night. Tho building was Insured for $450 In the Homo Ins. Co., of New York. It Is also reported to ha vo carried n heavy insurance with auothcrcompany but tills report could not be continued. On Tuesday evening, the school house located on tho Gray farm about nlno miles south of Salem, known as the "Capital School" was entirely con sumed by tiro The origin Is not known, but It Is tluunjlit to be the work of an Incendiary. The building cost about $500 and tho district cur ried an Insurance of $100 thereon. All tho furniture und school supplies of tho students wore destroyed, Prices still continue low. At the session of Marlon county's commissioners' Wednesday afternoon, the following self-explanatory order was made: In the matter of the pretended equalization by the state board of equalization of proporty enumerated on the assessment roll of Marlon county, state of Oregon, for the year 1896: It appearing to the county court from general report that the state board of equalization attempted un lawfully to increase the assessment of personal property In Marlon county, state of Oregon, for the year 1800, as enumerated on the assessment roll of said county for said year In the sum of 30 per cent, on each and every dol lar of the personal property assess ment, nnd especially on money, notes and accounts, shares of sIocks and goods, wares and merchandise and also attempted unlawful y to raise the assessment of town and city lots In the sum of 10 per cent, on each aud every dollar of the assessed value of town and city lots; and It appearing to the county court that such at tempted raise of such assessments are illegal aud void and without warrant of law and contrary to the spirit and intention of the act creating the said board of equalization and that such uula wful uttempt by said state boardof equalization to increase the valuation of the property above enumerated should not be by the county clerk of Marlon cnunty recognized or acqui esced In and said clerk should not add the per centum valuation unlawfully attempted to be added to said property as enumerated on the assessment roll of Marlon county for the year 1800. It Is, therefore, ordered that the county clerk of Marlon county, Or egon, be and Is hereby directed to dis regard and Ignore all action of the state board of equalization witli ref erence to the assessment roll of Ma rion county, state of Oregon, for the year 1890, and especially the at tempted Increase of valuation of per sonal property and town and city lots and that said clerk be and Is hereby directed to make no additions or de ductions from the assessed value of property enumeration said .assess ment roll for the year 1890 as equal ized by the county board of equal ization and the county court. Senator McClung of Eugene has been investigating the records at the state house, and will be prepared to fight the clerkship extravagance. It Is already the impression In the state house lobbies that Hon. Jo. Si mon will be president of the senate. The reports that come to the state house indicate that John H. Mitch oiiv mnnnirprs are scared to death and arc working like beavers to hold men, who were considered staunch support ers, and moving heaven and earth to get Populist and Democratic support for Mitchell. Hon. II W. Corbett, of Portland, is undoubtedly the leading candidate for United States senator on the gold standard side. Mr. Corbett is a gen tleman of the highest character. His financial and political landing can not be questioned. Members of the legislature are re porting the receipt of letters from the National Republican committee, M, A. Hauna, chairman, to stand in for Mitchell, that he isanou and out gold standard man on InUrnitlonal lines. Adolph Baker, an experienced and trusted employe at the asylum since Superintendent Lane's time, was pro moted yesterday to the position made vacant by the death of Supervisor llowley. There were a great many applicants for the position- Superin tendent Paine believes in promotion forelllcency in service. The weather forecast at the state house Is: Friday rain.
