A Salem Merchant writes under j-tlie licad:"A clianco To Show Your jfColors:" "The Journal has taken a stand on the Southern Pacllic and Boat services monopoly, and It is wag ging a bitter light afjainst the exorbit ant freight rate that has resulted ifroru the combine, which, in justice Uo the steamer service, It is needless ftosay, was compulsory on its part. The Daily Oregon Statesman, whose wolutuns were filled this morning with rprals.es unto its "Virtues" lias failed In say a word In behalf of the project jWieobject of which is to aid the Salem merchants. If it "keeps a watchful eye," on the interests of the people, doe$ It ot become it to declare itself on the matter? If that paper wishes the support of Salem businessmen, how does It dare to pass silently by a : project that Is Intended -for Salem's exclusive benefit? Or Is it too busy (.building motor lines to Eola? It is not to be diiputed newspapers do much towards influencing' opinion, I therefore, let lb either stand by two live Salem -men In their commendable project, or to take, sides with the Southern Irai-lllc Octopus." Editor Jouknal: As the election is over, and bimetallism is defeated for the present, I thercrfore desire to call attention to some of the many promises made by the Republican ad vocates of the single gold standard. They promised the Americau people that if they would elect Major McKin ley president, and adopt the single gold standard, that universal prosper ity would bless the people of this great country. Now it Is a fact that at the close of President Cleveland's administration, which is a single gold standard one, lias brought on the peo ple the greatest depression ever known In the history of this great country. How then is the Republican party going to bring the much mooted pros perity, when it has adopted the flnan clal policy of President Cleveland The Republican party lias promised the people prosperity if it was brought back into power, and if It falls to fulfill that promise to seventy million people, it has assumed a fearful re sponsibility. The Republican party has made great promises to the old soldiers, that if they would aid in the election of Comrade McKlnley, that they would be greatly benefitted by pension legislation. Now comrades, we can only judge the future by the past. The present house of congress has a very large Republican majority, and Col. John A. Pickler is chairman of the committee on invalid's pen sions. Many large petitions were pre sented to Col. Plckler's .committee, urging It to introduce a bill to pension all soldiers, who had served for a period of nineiy days, at eight dollars per month. Did the committee re port the bill? I answeremphatically, no' Tho limbless soldiers petitioned the'same committee tOfc'rant them a small Increase of pension, to aid then) to weather the storm o life In thelF declining years, but it heeded them not. But that august committee did report, and pass a large number of private bills, giving large pensions to widows of brigadier generals, some of whom never smelt gunpowder on the nild of battle. At the close of the i,rti.fl Renubllcan party refused to equElizethe bounties to the soldiers who did the mot of the fighting. Much has been said about the shrewd- a f the national debt, ana con- aress has paid to the bondholders grew hot 1 , tnriVm four billion, lour huuu. - -, six million dollars, upon a two billion debt, and have half the debt yet to pay. Soldiers of the greatest war known to the nations of the earth, we -can truthfully bay, that this republic is ungrateful. Comrades, there is much more that I would like to say, upon this subject, but time and space for bid. Very Respectfully, S. A. Johnson, Co. A., 4th C. V. I.
