Baker Couniv, Peoples. HARRY WATKINS, Yamhill Co., People E. IIOFER, Marlon Co., Silver Republican. A CONVERT TO SILVER. Vlirint a report compiled from the Des Moines, la., press of a speech or Rev. J. F. Nugent, tlio most tal ented pulpit orator of tlio Catholic church in that state. We tlo so because he was up to about one month ago an adjpeate of McKin ley and the gold standard platform, on which the Ohio candidate Is run ning. He was Interviewed in the Portland and Salem gold papers, as a great ac quisition to the McKinleyltes. Now hejflfclurcs he has read the literature of bTnietnlllsni and the gold standard, had realized that the power back of the campaign for McKlnley is a coercive one, In the interests or cap italism, and the millionaires, and like u man he takes his stand with the people. The McKinleyites are now moving heaven and earth to capture the Catholic vote. They have at the last moment drawn out a declaration from Arch-Bishop Ireland In behalf of Mc Kinley. For three months they have been Hooding every Catholic with literature, while the clergy of that denomination have rccelyed almost no literature from the Bryan campaign committees. Tub Journal is In possession of an original letter sent out by the "McKlnlcy and Hobart Business Men's National Campaign Committee" on September 10, to every priest of the Catholic church in the United States appealing to them per sonally, as members of the Roman Catholic clergy, to support McKlnley. Of coursc,Mark Ilanna and McKlnley are not Ignorant of what has been done. It Is no wonder independent and In telligent clergymen of nil denomina tions, who have observed the unprin cipled demagotfcry of the McKlnley managers are coming out as has Father Nugent, of Des Moines, and taken the side of an open, honorable and American candidate as Bryan has shown himself to be. The McKlnley managers are today trying to catch the gold voter and the silver .voter. They are aftor tlio Methodist and the Catholic, the Evangelical, the Hebiew. The time Is past when any candi date can win votes by base and dema gogical appeals to religious sentiments of any denomination. It Is high tlmo the American people set their foot down hard on elTorts to unite reli gion and politics, if wo are to huvo that complete separation of church and state, under which political free dom and religious liberty alone arc IKisslblo. More Curative Power Is contained In a bottle of Hood's Sarsnpurllhi than in any other similar preparation. It costs tho proprietor, manufacturer and jobber more and is worth more to tho consumer. It Is un oiitniEe."jS discrimiuntiun and should ij(oe tolc;aMsd by a froe people.,, rjt course, Oregon has no pro-tw'-'ou In its courts, its state govern ment, or Its railroad commissioners. All these functionaries tamely submit for the free pas they get to a rob- bej-y or the people or to any discrimi nation against a community. The state fair managers arc probably more to blame than the railroad company. But whoever is to blame it is an out rage on the people of Oregon who are shut out from attending a deserving state fair. It is u black eve to Salem's business Interest. That a railroad should give one fair rates it does not give another ralr Is itseir a high-handed proceeding for a common carrier existing under fran chises granted by the people. But it only shows to what an extent the lib erties of the people have been sur rendered by those who themselves fatten at public expense. oincss .gested and V .jUiiey is uuw vajii- MR. BRYAN'S CANDIDACY. It has been clean. It has been for truth, right, Justice and principle. It has been aggressively for the people and of the people. Mr. Bryan has been outspoken In championing his convictions and the platform lie stands upon. Mr. Bryan has not appealed to wealth, secret societies or religious denominations. Mr. Bryan Is tho American candi date. His platform does not contain an un-American word or Idea. Mr. Bryan is the candidate of the laborer and the producer. Ho is not tho candidate of the millionaires. Mr. Bryan Is supported by all the labor organizations of the United States. A candidate who is opposed by all tho organized labor or the United States must be the candidate of the aristocracy of our country. Mr. Bryan is not that man. He referred to the alleged intimidation of employes and urged the voters to cast their votes as they saw fit, even if they did vicar the other party's badge. He went it.to the question at length and closed with an eloquent plea for sliver. REGISTER, HEADLINES over a column report of Father Nugent's speech are as follews: "Attacked the supreme court. Father Nugent In his maiden free silver speech Tuesday made the usual anarchistic howl. Said he was a gold man until be went west, saw the wealthy silver mine -owners now talks silver. Two long hours of noth ing Nearly lost his voice talking about the crime of 1873 A crank's speech. REGISTER COMMENT. "Whatever Is the seating and standing capacity or Calvary Taber nacle, whether It be 3,000 or 3,500, that capacity is the size of the audi ence which Rev. Father Nugent, the pastor of the Catholic Church of the Visitation, of the cast city, addressed Tuesday evening on free and unlim ited coinage of silver. It was a char acteristic free silver speech. Father Nugent attacked the supreme court, bellowed till he was nearly black In tho face about the 'crime of 1873,' and for two long hours made a talk which contained absolutely nothing, nc is an excellent speaker and he held the attention of his audience well. He talked as though he dld't believe what he was saying himself." NOT A PARTY QUESTION. The speaker stated that until quite recently he had leaned decidedly to ward favoring the gold standard. After he had studied Caillsle lie con cluded he would not vote for gold. "Then I went westward, and follow ing an extended tour of pleasure and observation of the mighty empire be yond the Missouri, I came back and declared myself unqualifiedly for the free and unlimited coinage of silver. I studied the question just as I would have studied algebra. It is an economic problem and should be studied wholly as much. It Is not a party question at all, and in coming hear to-night I do not come to tell you how to vote, but to express to you my convictions upon this the most far-reaching and momentous ques tion that has been presented to the Americans voter for settlememt dur ing this generation. He said In closing that never before In the history of this country had such powerful inlluences been brought to bear by the great corporations and other largo employers of labor as has been observed in this campaign. The pressure brought to bear in this direc tion upon the tollers, he claimed, created a wide-spread apprehension among the worklngnien that to In dicate their political proferencis openly, ir they did not accord with those or their employer, was to invite I discharge and to bo deprived of the' prlvllego of earning bread for their! families.
