Health Improved. Rev. V. E. Copeland alighted from the Roseburg mall this morning, after an abscence of several weeks from tho city, a por tion of which time was spent In tho Sound country and tho remainder at various points In tho "golden" state. Mr. Copeland's many friends will bo pleased to learn that his health, which has not been the very best, has been greatly improved by tho vaca tion, and ho returns to his work feel ing more ablo to successfully carry on tho work of tho society. The PhllodObians and Philodorlan literary societies meet this afternoon and evening respectively, when offi cers for the ensuing year, will be elected, besides transacting other business. On Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock will be held the first gospel meeting of the Y. M. C.A and Y. W. C. A. for the new year. A vocal solo is promised by Mrs. McDowell, one of Salem's well known singers, and an excellent meeting is anticipated. Miss Heieu Matthews, president of the Y. W. C. A. will be In charge of the meeting. All students are Invited, both ladles and gentlemen. The Y. M. C. A. will give a recep tion for the young men of the school in the society halls on tho third floor tomorrow evening from 7:30 tell 10 o'clock. Refreshments will be served and a good program lias been pre pared. All gentlemen students are very cordially Invited to bo present. Mrs. Sarah Nourse Brown-Savage, our talented elocution instructor, as sisted by her pupils, will repeat the Emerson gesture drill In the near future at the request of many friends. The drill will be remembered as being given at tho commencement of Col lege of Liberal Arts last June. A temporary btudents body organi zation was effected Thursday after noon by the students of Willamette university. I. II. VanWInklo was made temporary chairman while Miss Nellie Clark kept a record of the meeting as secretary. I. P. Calllson stated the object and efficiency of such an organization of the students, since numerous matters come up be fore the students during the year for their consideration. A committee of seven, one member from each class, was appointed to form constitution and bylaws and also submit a plan of organization. The temporary chair man appointed the following com mittee: I. P. Calllson, senior; F. E. Brown, junior; Helen Matthews, sophomore; Jessie Settlemier, 'fresh man; Rex W. Davis, third year; Nellie which leaves j delinquent tax list amounting to $27,f39.88. Elmer Green was re-commltted to the Insano asylum for the second time this morning. He was examined be fore Judge G P. Terrell by Acting DistrIctAttorneyJ.il. McNary and Dr. S. R. Jessup. Green Is a mor phine fiend, and has been an Inmate of the asylum twice before. As soon as released from the institution his appetite for the stuff is again revived and lie soon falls into Ills degraded habits. All testimony in the Parrlsh will case will likely be received by tonight when the matter will be given Judge Terrell for consideration The case Is being strongly contested J. T. Hunt today received a bounty warrant from County Clerk L. V. iSlilen for $1.90 having turned over scalps to the county, on which aggre gated the amonntof the warrant. In matter of the estate of Peter Best, deceased, E. II. Dunham, the administrator, today filed a bond for $800, with County Clerk L. V. Ehlen. Wm. Bdshey is surety. To raise a campaign fund to defray the expenses of circulating literature and defraying expenses of speakers The Journal has opened a popular subscription of a fixed amount per week. Following subscriptions have been reccived and all who feel able are requested to hand In their .names and amounts, which will be duly ac knowledged ln-these columns, iu sums from ten cents upwards. In spite of slurs from the gold stand ard Statesman subscriptions to the Bryan campaign fund increase. No canvass has been made but if every friend of the people's candidate will hand in his name and amount he can give, from 10 cents upward, we will give ciedit in tills column.
