Her impassioned rendition of the JerTcrsonlan classic held the closest attention of the Immense populace and she was cheered at its close. The choral society now sang the "Anvil Chorus" with tho clangingof tho blacksmith as an accompanle mont. with Winkler at tho piano. Heritage's chorus was not more than half represented on this occasion but threw such force and expression into this gem from thcopcra"n Trovntore" that tho audience went fairly wild. NOW THE EAOLK KLEW, as for 120 years past tho Americans have met to eelobrate their Independ ence and President BIoss was received with hand clapping and applause. He recited the wrongs of Great Britain and said we still fell at times as if we'd like to whip her onco more. (Laughter and Applause.) In homely and practical sentences tho orator re viewed the progress and development of the century. His delivery was pleasant and often forced a smile from the reluctant stoicism that usually sits on tho countenances of a Fourth of July oiowd. Patriotism and humor mingled with each other In inscK!mblu veins like the gold and silver In the mountains of Oregon 10 to 1. He thought we could whip England 10 to 1. (Laughter.) He gracefully alluded to the admis sion or Utah at tho exact hour or noon and won a good round of cheers. The speaker possessed the prime essentials of a good open air speaker, lie was both dramatic and entertain ing. Mimic by the three bands was announced after tho applauso at the close of tho oration hud died away. It was a ilttlugcouclusion forso grand a program. MIOBUMMKIt UNTKItTAINMENT. Saturday evening was Indeed a warm and sultry summer eve and the temperature In tho ocra house was quite tropical, but still a well-tilled house witnessed tho Mlduimmcr en tertainment. The program was opened by a selection from tho Alpluo Quartet, who sang In their native Swiss tongue. Tho selection was warmly applauded. Chas. II. Uurggraf is always per fectly at homo when In tho role of a negro, and Saturday night was not an exception to tho rule. As "Ilastus White" on the Issues of tho day, Mr. Uurggraf kept tho house laughing almost continuously. The "culled gemman" expressed himself quite freely on tho money and tarllf ques tions and also madn a fow remarks on tho suffrage question. Ho also en gaged In several personalities, much to the amusement of tho audience. Responding to an oucoru, "Uastus" recited an amusing poetic selection of his own production. Miss Mabel Carter recited "Old Aco" upon request, and tho audlonco showed Its appreciation of tho num ber byglvlug tho talented joungelocu- tloulst a gcuorous applause. It was a thrilling account of a horso race In which tho prize wan a handsome maiden's hand. As In a game of cards tho Aco always beats tho Jack, so It did In this lovo affair. Miss Carter will be remembered as a grad uate from tho collego of oratory from Wlllamotto unlvonlty this year tinder Prof. S. N. Uorwn-Snvago. Chas. 1). Ford, ono of Salem's ac complished vocalists, sang "If Hearts Could Only Speak" and rccolvcd a hearty eucoro to which ho responded with a second ballad. Mr. Ford possesses a rich tenor voice. Miss Jeanotto Booth recited a pretty solcctlon but tho audience was deprived of tho pleasure of hearing It till, owing to tho continual disturb ance that took place along Court street. Miss Booth always dollghts an nudlcuco and has many admirers. Tho Irish Sketch by . W. Hohnan and C. Taylor caused considerable amusement. A great many Jokes wore Introduced. Mrs. Halllo.Parrlsh Hinges, Salem's prima donna, was greeted with an applatt.se when sho stopped upon tho platform. Mrs. Hinges sung a beau tiful selection and kindly responded ton generous encore. These numbers served as a prelude to tho number which had aroused con siderable Interest. Tito burlesque, "Queen of Hearts" or Faust up to date, gave evldenco of some clover work on tho part of Its composer, C. II. Uurg graf. It was somothlng new, and proved most enjoyable. Mr, BurggralT, as Mophlstopholes, ruler of tho lower regions, carried out ills-part well, Miss Emma Murphy, as "Martha, Queen of Hearts," sur prised her many frlonds. "Mar guerite" found a pretty and suitable representative In Molllo Bernardl. Murray Wndo.nstho "Modern Faust," did exceptionally well. Messrs. C. L. Smith, C. W.GIIilngham, Geo. Satin dorson and It. THE NATIONAL GUARD. aAt 7 In tho evening about two thousand persons gathered on Wlllson park, where theSalem city council, In cluding bis honor, the mayor, reviewed compalnlcs "B" and "I," Second Reg iment, O. If. G., with Lieutenant Colonel M. W. Hunt, nide-dc-camp to Governor Lord, as chief In tho Held und Mayor Percy Willis commanding tho troops. The band of tho rcglmont was there and Major Willis put them through tho tactics, assisted by Captains Evans and lloliuau and Lieutenants Leabo and Lenon. The boys descrvo great credit for their fine appearance and able drill. Tho maneuvers con sumed about an hourand adjournment was taken to tho opera house. THE PLUQ UOLIES. These citizens made their appear ance on Commercial street about G:30 o'clock and had everything their own way for an hour or more. The dis play was highly enjoyed. The pro cession moved north to Marlon square and counter marched to tho Willam ette hotel. 1 ho awards or prizes wcro as follews: For tho best display liithohurlesqiio brigade, Cold's circus, took tho llrst prteo; Chinese second prize. Tho Sllvcrtou Marino band also made a splendid appearance and played cxccceingly well. Both that baud and tho Salem baud would bo a credit to u large city. Tho Dallas baud In full uniform also played well and was the largest and most formid able musical organization ever turned out of Polk county. When these three bauds marched and played in n body they numbered nearly a hundred men, and they played In remarkable unlion. THE COMMITTEES who did tho work on this great occas ion desoive especial mention. The celebration proper was conceived and carried out under tho Immediate pat ronage of Protection and Valley lodges A..0. U. W., represented by Messrs. Gideon Stolz, C. II. Lane, mid W. A. Bigdon; Woodmen Camp No. 18, by II. A. Thomas, W. G. Westa- cott and Chas. Burggralf. These gentlemen, assisted by numerous sub committees, of which each chairman was a member of tho exccutlvo com mittee, did their work very quietly but elTectlvely, and in spite of hard times and many obstacles, they made a great success.
