President W. C. Hawley wa again
called away, last Sunday, owing to
tbe death of an uncle, Mr Belknap
of 3Ionroe, Benton county. The fac
ulty and students extend their sincere
sympathy to the president, In hls
bereavement.
The annual college prayer meeting
will be held next Tuesday evening, at
the University.
It Is understood that Templcton of
Eugene, performed a very ungentle-
manly act last Saturday, at the state
field meet. AsScott, our pole ranker,
was preparing to take a run and leap
over the pole, Templcton grabbed
Scott's arm in Ills muscular grip,
squeezing It quite severely, nnd at
the same time saying, "jou can never
Jump that, Scott." However, our
pluck little Scott "stayed with" his
bulky antagonist, from the upper val
ley town.
In speaking of the result of the
field day Saturday President Hawley
remarked In chapel Monday morning
that the management of the school
was thinking of placing old Wil
lamette on an equal footing with the
other colleges, pertaining to athletic
sports. This means a trainer with
whose services our school may make a
better showing at tbe field day meet
next June. President Hawley stated
that tho school had great confidence
In the nthletlc team but luck as well
as "other things" wero against us.
J. Rer Hyars left Wednesday morn
ing for Goldendnle, Wash., for a visit
with his brother. Mr. Byars will re
turn to Salem to attend commence
ment exercises.
Hnd Commodore Perry, that fear
less naval commander, been a member
of tho Willamette university team, he
could have given utterance to the fol
lowing expressien: "We have met the
enemy and we are theirs." However
we hopo to bo able to say next year us
did tho gallant commander, "We have
