COUNTY REFORM In tho excitement of tho stato election the peoplo should not ovcr look the fact there should bo a re adjustment of tho salailes of county otllolals. This should bodono In tho next legislature to take effect at the beginning of the terms for 185)8. Tho pay of tho candidates now to bo elected cannot well bo changed with out litigation. Tho otllces now cost In Marlon; ulerk $1300, sheriff W00, (and estimated $1600 more) recorder $IUS0, treasnrer$l200, assessor $3000 to $7000, Judgo $1200. Tho olllces .of sheriff mid assessor cost rrom MOOO to $7000 each and tho other onices cost from $1200 to $3000. Thostrlfo for those two fat olllces oxertsa corrupting Intluenco In our county polities and oven 011 tho legls laturo. They should bo brought as nearly to a level as possible The assessors olllco should bo abolished and precinct assessors elected by tho peopl of each precinct. That would cut tho assessment of tlio county down to $3000orless and assess more- property. Collection of taxes should bo taken ironi tuo sheriff and given to tlio treiiburer, Tho slierlffs oulce should not cost all told over $3000 a year. Pmu.MiY Politics. -Tho new book 011 tho reformation of tho American primary system, Is now on sale at Ikariwrn' book store, am That Is a gm-it question. It Is n biond question. Jt ntTrol cM'ry Interest. The taxpayer needs protection against extravagance In coilnty, state 'and national government. The farmer wants the protection of good ronds, good schools and good markets. The politician wants protection against the ballots of the voter that like bullets threaten to end Ills olllclul career. Protection, like charity, should bo-1 gin at home. If you can get the nee- life at homo don't send abroad for them. At the same tlmo when you can get a good suit of clothes In the town yon live In don't send away for It. Don't send your money for men In an outside town to make the profit on, when you can give a home man the bcnellt of that profit. You may get part of It back, If kept at home, but If sent nbroad, never. Protection to our manufacturers without restricted Immigration is only a bonanza to the capitalist and a ctirc to the laborer. It draws laborers here fiom the whole world, gives the manufacturer the pick of the cheap labor or the world while It shuts out competition with manufactured goods from abroad. Give us protection. But nlsostop foreign Immigration from Europe as well us from Asia until there Is em ployment for the labor of our country at fair wages. My father says In Europe and Englnnd you have to have a pull to get any kind of a Job. AIIOUT CATS. I hope you will never think lightly of a cat. A cat Is about the only animal that will uol eiiduie to be de prived of Its liberty. A cat would rather live In a barn, get Its own liv ing and have Its freedom, than to bo cooped up in the 1 Idlest house and fed with the richest food. A cat wounded by a stick or stone, or caught in some trap from which It has either gnawed or pulled its way, and perhaps lost a paw, will crawl to some quiet, out-of thc-way place and endure In silence agony which no human being would endure and get well without n doctor. Some people starvo cats to muko them catch mice and rats This Is n great mistake, as they hunt for pleasure as much as for food, and if driven to hunger will not hunt but steal if they arc kept about a house. If cats are well fed, and given meat onco or twice a week, there will bo very few rats or mice on the premises. WHAT A MKCIIANIO DID. A young piano maker loft his homo In the cast and went to San Francisco In 1817. Ho bought town lots with his money, and when he died In 1870, he was worth $4,000,000. lie gavo 870O,000ln his will to build an observ tory on Mt. Hainllton, to contain the laigest telescope ever yet made. It Is sixty feet long nnd four feet In dlnm- cter. A lino wauron road Is imiir. in the top of tho mountain, which is 4200 feet high. Tho iniin who left tho money to build all this, was James Lick. IHCVCLK AND UONICEY HACK. .In Lenz's "Tour Around the World," occurs this account of a raco between that most famous Amer ican wheelman, and a Persian donkey: ... -a coupio or miles out of the city I ovoitook a donkey ridden by two peas ants, heavy men, who challenged mo to a trial of speed. Tho Persian don key Is tho best In tho east, and is not only speedy but as strong ns a horse. I must confess that I was very much surprised at tho speed and endurance of my present competitor. Wo kopt si le by side for almost a mile and t'icn the race ended rather abruptly. To avoid a largo stone in tho road I turned suddenly to ono side, In the the direction of the donkey. This unexpected prank of my steel horse he didn't seem to fancy, for out he shot, almost instantly, with one of his characteristic side lurches, precip itating his two unsuspecting riders to tho ground. They slowly picked themselves up, rubbed the dust from their eyes and walked to where his asinlno majesty stood, with extended cars, looking the picture of uncon cerned Innocence. "Oh, you grand father of asses," they shouted In unison; but neither this nor a slap alongside the head seemed todlstuib his cxasperat lug serenity." INTKIli:STlN(I STOUV OP A STORK . Some children living In a northern province of (lei ninny, dl-icovoicd a stork's nest upon their loof and all the summer shared their tidbits with their long-legged friend, which bt canio very companionable. At tho signs of cold weather, the stork prepared to Hit to warmer climes. Tho children were sad ut tho thought of losing tholrpct, btittholr parents consoled them with tho as surance that the bird would return the next spring. Tho children consulted together nnd wrote a little note, stating that tho stork was very dear to them, and begging the good people In whoso country It might spend tho winter to be kind to their pet, and send It back to them in the spring. They fastened tho note to a rlblxin, tied It around the bird's neck, and tucked It under Its wing. Tho next day they sadly watched tho stork wing Its way toward milder skies.
