A Satcmlte who was recently at Pcta luniu, Cal., a town not over half as large as the capital or Oregon, was surprised to find over forty saloons and a state of affairs morally that shocked his sensibility at every turn. The same Is true of hundreds of towns smaller than Salem. Salem has some vicious elements, but nothing like the conditions that prevail In western towns, or eastern towns for that matter, ofhnlfthe size. People need not be afraid to send their sons and daughters to the schools itnd colleges at Salem. Tho business, moral and religious atmos phere Is as clean, and tho Influences that surround social and, family life arc as wholesome as In any city of Its size In the Northwest.
