The Hood Illvoraud Ttie Dalles ber. ries, which oro the Clarke Seedling variety, nro tho most exceileut quality nnd fluo shippers, nnd tho good prices roallzed by tho Hood ItlVer growers Is owing, also, to tno great euro tuken In preparing tlio berrlea for shipping. Tho Portland berries nro Triumphs nud bhurplefs varieties, tho Triumphs being tlio better shippers. Tho Milton berries ure mostly Hliurp 18 variety, The dllleretico In price renllzed by tho Hood Itlver aud Milton berrlea prove tho superiority of tho Clark tieedllugua a shipper, and ulso tho need of more 'ouro in puolting uud shipping. Hail Milton growers Ukeii ttio same care us the Hood Hlver, growers, far bjltcrresultHWouldlmve been obtained. rJtmwuerrles were shipped to Mon tana, Utah, Colorado und Wyoming potulp, nud u considerable quantity to Oitiulis. 2,600 boxes of oherrlea Were shipped, averaging to tho grower 40o per 10 pound box. JJluok Republican proved tb bo tho belter shipper for long dis tance. Eight cars, oontaliiiug 7 057 crates.or 141,140 pounds of peach plums were shipped, netting to tho - growers, $051,01, or six tenths per pound. Two of tho cars were from Douglas couuty, tho balance from Tho Dalles. The sale of only three cars wero satisfactory lo tho union or growers, but tho salo of these Is evidence that, .though tho poach plum is a tender frultj It can bo shipped to udyuutago, but it must bo handled with great cure. The Douglas county curs did not arrive in us good condition us The Dalles shipmouts; the fruit was considerably riper when shipped. The total number of prunes shipped wore 65,443 crates and 10,822 boxts, or a total of 1,345,600 pounds. Tue bulk of prunes shipped were Itullups, Amounting to 47,070 orates and 8,070 boxes, or a total of 1,152.810 pounds. The total amount romitted to growers $14,787, or a (Nile over 1J cnti net per pouud. Of the Silver prunes, 2,070 crates aud 927 boxes were shipped, or 00,120 pounds; these averaged net nbout of a cant per pound. 5 COt crates aud 025 boxes, or 135,600 pounds of Huugarlan prunes wero shipped, netting to the growers f2, .'127.75, or 1? con. a per pouud. A few crates of French or Petlto prunffl were shipped by growers as an experiment, but they will never pay as shipper. Of UradeUw, Yellow Egg, Wash inton and other varieties of plums a?d peacbe?, 1,000 und 3,270 crates were shipped, or 101,600 pounds, aver aging llcveeevenths of u cent por pound. 7.UG0 boxes of pears wore uMpped, mostly Barlletls. lVar shipments proved unsatisfactory and the uel everago wjb 25 cents per box of 40 Pu.nd. The peura wero very scabby thu year with the exception of Iboso i' Hi uthern Oregon which were vry Children Crvfor PItoher' Castorla. I 'tno but not shipped etrly unoUjcli. Most shipments of Ortgon lUttlot'n proved Very t1lftnipolntliig, fiotwltli stnmllng the California crop wns short nnd good prices worn renll.cd for Call f iruln penrs. liut litis Is tils hardest full tu pack and It was hliiiisil liiipos Mblu for the growers to understand III rtt llitytntisl bo shipped wlun grcou. Many peats sent us to ship were In riper condition litre (bun limy should iMvubioiiou arrival In ens' em mar ket. Three full cur loads of grupes and one partial cat wurn shipped. Two curs from Klickitat county did not carry well, tho owner of tlio rapen In Omsha received lliem. 1 lie gropes would mould uud rot, and much pains were taken In shipping, euro being taken in pack'ng only the llrm solid grapos. No actual loss was oeeatloued but they wero not successful ship ments, One cur of German prunes, a car of Ilillatis aud Silver prunes, and ouo car of mixed plums, crabapplos a id l pleH, which wero shipped without our knowledge, proved losses to the glowers. Iu the Instance of tho Ger man, Italian aud Silver pruues, the fruit was soft and rlpo, both crs wero from Southern Oregon. The oar of Italians and Slivers on arrival In Port laud showed slgus of rot necessitating tho whole car being unpicked. These ure all cistern shipments and do mil include sr,rao 600,000 pounds of fruit handled locally at Portland fnd Sound cities nud other local points. Where the crates of prunes were full aud well packed tho growers was able to realize good prices. Wbllo tlio in experienced packing and handling on part of h great many caused them to reallza considerable less than an aver age of 1 cauls por pound. Our ship ment of the Italian pruu, green, has proved beyond a doubt its oxcellont qualities as a shipping fruit. We re fused many shipments aflor tho heavy rains in the latter part of Beplember, und we wero somewhat fearful of some of our last our j. The liwt snipment of Italian prunes was made Soptoicber 25, but as late as October 6th, shipments wero made by others and growers rea lm! ed as high us t cents per pound. The Eastern receivers of Orcgou fruits, especially tho Italian prune, pronounced our Iruit equal to any aud It ouly needs oxporienced packing nud careful handling to accomplish much better results. Tlio Silver prune Is not ai good a shipper. Being light colored It shows tbo bruises mora plainly, and tuch bruises causing dark apots on tbo fruit which is a detriment to good Bales. However some sales of good solid fruit were equal to tho Italians. But the colored fruit is always preferred. The Huugarlan piuuo Is tho most profitable shipper. While It has not the fltvor of either the Italian or Silver prune, yet it possesses all the keeping qualities of the Italian besides being muoh larger and of mora attractive color, which alone soils It, and shipments of Hun garlan prunes always pay well. We have this year conducted seven warehouses in different sections of the state, aud besides tho necessary help needed for packing, making boxes, etc, have hud niuo experienced fruit men employed, and with our utmost pre cautions, poorly packed aud overripe fruit has been shipped, which Invar iably results lu a disappointment to tho grower aud u hardship to the union, It Is tho Intonllou next year to securo permanent and adequate ware houses In all principal shipping points and hare all fruit packed under our direct supervision in these warehouses, thus making a uniform pack. In our shipment of dried prunes we aro shipping nothing but our own pack. To facilitate which wo are con- ducting and have fitted up warehouses at Portland, Saem, and Iloseburg. In theso packing bouses are dried prune graders, scales, presses and other appll unccfl needed to properly get the prunes ready for market. We are syste matically introducing our prunes to eastern consumers in the most direct way, and have hod up to date 600,000 Iba in our warehouses, half of which has been paoked and shipped, and balance Is packed and ready for ship ment. . In order to more profitably dispose of the products of our many shippers, aud especially the fruit aud produce of all kinds that are not suitable or profit able for euBtern shipment, and also to take udvontage of our local aud north west markets, where prices are better than could be realized for eastern ship ment, we have found it necessary to establish a local wholesale aud jobbing department. Having this we aro in a position to handle auytbiog you may have for sale, for the Portland or tribu tary markets, and would, for this department, solicit your shipments and nii-nrxTHtlnn.
