A sad case ot poisoning occurred in Englewood addition to Salem about 430 o'clock Tuesday afternoon wherein two little children were poisoned, one fatally. The unfortunate children were Walter Churchill aged four years, th son or Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Cburcblll, residing at the corner of Fourteenth and D street, and Efiel Welch, the 3 year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thorn is Welch llvlni? on Fourteenth near Division. Between 4 and 6 o'clock TnesJay afternoon a number of children were playing in the yard with Walter and Ethel aDd becoming tired ot this sport went Into the basement. One of the older children secured from the top of the sare a box In which was a bottle filled with nproplne, an alcbolide of bslladmna which is a very poisonous medicine, being an eye preparation. Whether the poison was taken In wardly is not positively known, but shortly afterward Mrs. Cburcblll was called d wo sta'rs. She noticed tho eyes of the little girl were badly iwoolen and bad her taken home about two blocks distant accompanied b Little Walter. Returning soon aft-'i he told Mrs. Churchill she was wauted at Mrs. Welch's at once. Arriving there she found the little girl suflering Intense pair from the poison aud :. raging fever. The uufnrtunate child did not regain consciousness after the polsin bud been administered. Mrs. Churchill returned home about fi o'closk and found Walter almost wild wltb tain. Hastily summoning Dr. Reynolds the little fellow was made as mfortable as poidble. This morning h was rwtiug easily and;in a fair way to recover, having had a very narrow 83cape. It is thought Walter did not receive so heavy a dose of the poison aidid Ethel, the story finding the most ac6jptance being that the little girl took the liquid Inwardly. Through out the night she suffered from spasms, passing peacefully away at 430 a. in. today. At one time during the night her fever reached the extraordinary height of 108.
