An Kccentrlo Character.
It was at night, when tho lowor part
of Broadway was as silont as a village

its driver comfortably hunched forward

on tho pavement, and a leg protruded
through ono of tho cab windows. Tho
fow pedestrians and ono policoinaii who
hoard and saw woro htartled, and tho
observing Sun man had dismal forebod

possibly tho tragody of a Broadway cab.
Hut tho drivor ronmiiiod ooinfortably

Passengers on tho bridgo cars in tho
early evening haa noticed tho tall,
lanky individual who fills and lights
tho oil lamps in tho cars. Ho stands
about 0 feet 3 inches high and Is very
thin. His height is valuable to him in
his present occupation in reaohing fox
tho lamps. This ho does with tho aid of
a small box, whilo a shorter man would
need a ladder.
Tho swif Uio&s with which ho works
is marvolous. Ho says it comes of long
practice. Ho will board a train coming
in at tho Brooklyn station boforo tho
last passenger has loft tho cars and will
then busy himsolf with his oil can and
box.
In each bridgo car thero aro at least
eight lamps, whilo some carry ton. This
makes at least 83 lamps in a train of
four cars. Tho lamplightor must fill ev
ery lamp in oaoh car in tho short timo
it takos to switch tho train from ono
track to tho other. Ho does not oven
havo timo to oxtiuguish tho light, but
must pour tho oil in whilo tho lamp is
burning.
This llghtningliko work must bo con
tinued until every car is illuminated.
Ho no sooner gots through with one
train than auothor demands his atten
tion, but ho gots them all lighted with
out tho loast trouble. Now York Her

Tho giant of all tho feathered bipeds
was tho colossal cpiornis of Madagascar.
Tho scientific announcement of tho dis
covery ot tho remains of this gigantic
species of bird was mado by Gcoffroy
St. Hilairo, tho great Fronch savant, on
Jan. 27, 1851. Tho specimen of which
ho gavo a description had been found
in a guano bed and stood ovor 13 feet
in height Tho egg found among tho
bones, described by tho scientific French
man, was os large as a two gallon jug,
an experiment proving that it would
hold tho contents of six largo African
ostrich eggs, or 148 common hen eggs.
Tho giant moa, which is believed to
havo but recently become extinct In Now
Zealand, was larger in point of weight
and bulk than tho epiornis, but it only
stood 0 feet high, quite high enough,
however, when it is known that its
weight was not less than 1,000 pounds.
Tho great auk is another Bpeoles of
bird but rocently extinct. Tho most ro
markablo thing about this largo auk is
tho fabulous prices now asked and given
for spocimens of its eggs. Quito recent
