FOUR MEN ME Ell A Powder Mill Blows Dp Xear Praole, Cal. A BIS MIHQIME Al ROME Hatrimoaial Skirmish by Seattle Olebritfes. Sjls Fraxceco, May 21. The Cali fornia workj at Pinole were blows up at 100 this mofuinjt. Three men were killed. The shock of the expiat ion wis felt here and at Vallejo. The killed arc Clare Johnson, of San Pablo; W. D. Taykayrf San Pablo, and Chas. Venegas, of Hartinex. IX A. Dean, of Pinole, was fatally in jured. Adjoining the nitro glycerine department was a tagging noose in which 2C0 Chinese and two or three white foremen were at work. This boilding was also destroyed bat it is not known whether any one was billed there or not though it is re ported that eighteen Chinamen are missing. Great confusion followed the explo sion and it was impossible to tell the exact loss of life. A telegram was re ceived from Pinole at noon and states , that five white men were killed, which includes besides those mentioned above, J. Minugh, of Oakland. Property loss is very light. Only a small amount of nitro glycerine was io the building at the time. The shock of the explosion jras plainly felt twenty or thirty miles away. A later dispatch says it is definitely kaown that fifteen Chinamen were killed besides the five white men already mentioned. A Matrimonial Skirmish. Seattle, Wn., May 21. ItwiH make yea feel better i and year fimTry wiH bejsjt that much happier. In Oregon, we can have a boaqoet oa the table the? year aroond fee a rery Httie efiort. The best enre tor insomnia Is digging In the grcacd. A professional man who sever digs or works In the toil can hardly baTe a perfectly ckar brain. Like Antwoa in the Gree mythdegy wa get our strength renewed when we come In contact with mother earth. The man or woman who will follow oatdoor garaenisc get right down on all fours and dig and plant and weed until the perspiration rolls oil you can add one third to the years of hh or her life. It Is nature' plan. We were never created to live Indoors entirely and merely once Is a while go out and look at the earth at a distance. What sturdy limbs and what tooghtened sinews- and joints and what a solid complexion all the girls of Salem would have if they had to work afield halfaday froni four to six days in the week. Bat that is too much, yon say. Come out and see the editor dig. Bat labor would impair your mental ability you think. Not a bit. Try grinding; out a daily newspaper and see where your ideas would come from. We get more from coltivatin g a row cf potatoes In our garden sometimes than we do from a stack of exchanges. The min ister would get more from successfully starting a good .cabbage patch thanhe would from half a dczsn encyclopedias on theology. We cannot separata our eelws from nature without a loss to ourselves. Old nature don't care a daru. She goes on about her work. But her acquaintance cultivated at the end of a hoe handle will take just as many weeds out of our poll as it does out of hers, and such fellows as Oscar Wilde and Theodore Durrant might have been decent men if their hands had ever been blistered with hsnest labor. Get down and (dig, brethem and sisters. THE NEXT SENATE. Senator John H. Mitchell is the sen ior Republican member of the senate committee on privileges and elections. He thinks Henry A. Dupont was le gally elected senator from Delaware. It would seem to be; a plain proposi tion that "the acting governor, hold Ing the office of governor, has no right, while thus holding such office and exercising Its functions, to exercise any of the functions of a state senator, eltlfer those relating to the election of a United BUtes'seaalor or otherwise." When Governor Ferry of Washington was absent, Lleut-Qoveruor Laugh ton became governor, aud, while gov ernor, ceanod to be lieutenant-governor. When Governor Ferry returned Laugh, ton again became lleuteuaut-zoverttor of the elate. It I absurd to say that Governor WftUou, of Ddeware, uiut continue to he shaker of t'i seaaU In order to be juallflsl fur holding tho offlc of ooveruor. He vactdou oslcw q take the other.
