The theory that the last legisla ture was more extravagant tbaa He fHredeceBor ia a mistake The amount pent two years ago is Bald to huvo ox seeded 127,000. That would be mote than f 10,000 In excess of the lost lex's ture for this I urpose. Below will be found a list of the eierks and employees.of the last Oregon teghlature, compensation of each, uuitie of cemmltteo or service, and nuwo of pwon authorizing the service. The e4w.ira.an of the committee employing (be eterk is given in each house, us that ia the person.usuaily responsible for the clerk's appointment tand vouching for the pay, We give the list below because the iniormatlon here given has not before been made public. The namsa of clerks have been published the amount of' the clerk rolls. The expenses of the for this extravagance and abuse must Anally be EH.de to rest somewhere, and the way to atop the clerkship evil Is to make the member of the legislature responsible for their employment, re sponsible to his constituents for the expenditure of the money, which in most cases ia paid for no actual services rendered. In many cases there was no work whatever to do, and In other cases the Job was created for clear gain. It will be seen that the senate with only 30 members spent $7027.20 for its clerks, while the bouse with CO mem spent only 15074.80. Dividing the ex pense of clerks of Joint and special committees equally between the two houses the pereaplta expense of clerks for senators was (300.61, for representa tives $132.43 The senate hod 28 stand ing committees. The liouse had 38 such committee. We call attention tj these facta, be cause several erroneous listj of commit tee clerks have been priut-d, and state ments haye been printed that the total cost of the legislative committee clerks for 1895 was as high as $20,000. Mc Mubon's Wasp says the committee cierka for 1895 cost $22,045. Tho list printed below which is complete and correct foots up exactly $10,720.00. Mr. McMabon has overstated it nearly Ave tfiousand dollars. The list of clerks discloses a score or more of the Dolph senatorial lobby and t io election of a Uultjd States senator prolonged for forty days undoubtedly nad a tendency to swell the total ex- penso, as tho lobby wad largely paid on J T Galloway Amy h Booth Louise Dessez Rosa Parrott ME Stewart .
