I Thursday evening of this week a little dinner party was given at the! home of Chief Justice R. S. Bean, on ! East Court street, in honor of Associate; Justice and Mrs. C. E. Wolverton, who I has lately came from Albany to make j their future home in Salem. The event was not literally a mum affair, for a most pleasant eocial hour was spent, but the home wai tastily decorated with magnificent cbryeanthemums.the favorite flower, of which the hostess U u successful grower. Friday evening, Miss Mlnule Col well, the efficient cashier of Gilbert B os. extensive banking business, en tertained a few of the neighborhood friends at the home of her mother,Mrc H. L. Colwell, on East State street. The amusement of the evening was w blst aud etceteras. The first prize of the evening was carried ofl by Mrs. W H Downing, while Mrs. J. Stapletcn was iven the reward for ability to make the fewest points. Those pres ent were Mr. ana Mrs. R. 8. Bean, Mr. aud Mrs. Geo. 8. Downing, Mr. and Mrs., W. H. Downing, Mr. and Mrs. Jno. After an interesting game a delicious luncheon was served on the exquisitely painted china which was executed by the hostess. The marvelous handi work of the artist was so muoh ad mired as to almost detract attention from their delectable contents. Miss Colwell received the highest compli ments of the party for being a most ac complished china artist as well as social entertainer. Holverson, were soon gathered at Mr. Gilbert's home, taking him by complete surprise. P. H. D'Arcy ap peared before the county court for Wil lamette University, with a claim for rebate of taxes to the amount of 528S on the part of the campus used as a nursery. He showed in the petition that while the land was being ii.ed as a nursery, the rental of ?160 per year was used to pay the debt of the school, aud that the land was being planted to trees and shrubbery for the beauti fying of the grounds. The petition was not granted by the court. Steps will be taken to enjoin the sheriff from selling the property at delinquent sale. A Serious Gash. Wesley Vuuder- cook, who lives eight miles south of the city had the misfortune yesterday to drive an ax through the fore part of nls right foot in such a manner as to cut a gash three inches long on the underside. The wound was dre&ed by Dr. Bradsbaw, and this morning he was brought in to the home of bis aunt, Mrs. E. X. Cooke, where he will remain for treatment. Mr. Vander cook is a new-comer, and a member of the Grand Army as well as the K of P older. Gluing prizes with baking powders means that tbey are inferior.
