The PoUon or tbe Cobra. The Wto of tho terrible cobra of India is looked upon an meaning certain death It 13 not rorprunng that experiments to determine the nature of this awfni poison should attract wide attention when tbey are made in a ecientific man ner entitling their results to be accepted with confidence. Such experimenta have recently been conducted by Mr. A. A. Kanthack. The venom was obtained by ytv.ting tbe heads of living cobras, by which nerve trying operation the deadly fluid was equeezed out of the fangs! The fluid dries verj' j"rf2yand leaves a yellow substance recembling gum arable or the dried albumen of egg, which is easily pulverized. The activity of the poison is destroyed by prolonged boiling, a concentrated solution of it withstand ing the effects of boiling for an hour or twohefore entirely losing its poisonous action. A weak solution could bo ren dered innocuous by being boiled from 20 minutes to half an hour. Hut of coune this can givo no comfort to any victim of a cobra bite, since the venom, once injected into his blood, could by no posidbility bo subjected to such a process of boiling. Ammonia and chlorine water also proved capable of destroying the poison if applied to it for a considerable time in strong solutions, and carbolic acid con siderably delayed its poisonous action. Somo hope had been raised that doses of strychnia might prove a means of cure, but tho experiments showed that there was no foundation for this hope. Bo far, then, a euro for tho bito of the cobra remains to bo discovered. Youth's Companion.
