THE GM'DS FLOCKING TO NEWPORT BeHghtfal Weather -The Talley People Who Are Here. Newport, Or., July 20. Editor Jeurnal: For many years I bave visited this summer resort, but generally to remain ouly a few days; tbis year eickntea compelled me to resort to the t-eaaide for health and re-cu-erative properties found only In tbe strop?, bracing tea air, and tbe longer I remain here tbe more I am de'ighted witb Newport and Its cur roundings as a pleasant letreat from tbe bot and disagreeable weather of tbe valley. During our otay hen- f some fourteen dajg, witb oue or two rxcep tioi.sj tbe tky bus been cloudless, ubile tbe sun's rays have only given warmth enough to make out door exercise pleahaut and agrreable. On the south I-eacb, an overcoat could be worn with comfort, though uot necttwarily re quired. Newport, with its leautiful bay, prees in this feature alone great advantiig' over auy othT watering place north of San Francisco. Here, at aii hour of the day, one may find amu eruent in snlior row I oat riding, wliib to vary the pleasure tit-b!ng in the bay or for deep t-ea fish can be bu c--ijfully ei J-ed by auy one, it re quiring no practice or i-klll. Tbp other day Mr. Amos Strong of Salem and oLe or two other gentlemen canubt 80 ILm. of iloUDf'ers in about two hours, Deoftbf-m weighing 30 It. Bt sides tbe amuirments of tbe bay, one can find pleasure in rumbling among tbe cottages on Nse Creek, aud around over the bills, from any oue of wbicb i fine view of the bay aud ocean Is ob tained. When you add to these attrac tions tbe fact that almost every day some coasting steamer crosses the bay aud comes to Newport for supplies-, often remaining neveral hours, to say nothing of tbe coast steamers wbicb ply regularly between San Francisco and Yuqulna City always stopping at Newport, one can readily under stand tbe advantage this place posseeee over Long Beach or ClaUop where there U nothing else but ocean, ocean, beach, beach, and wbea one takes bin life in bis bands if he attempts surf bathing. Speaking of surf bathing I can truthfully iay that tbe beach here has no superior anywhere. There I m undertow, nor any dead hue, no grind as at CiaUop or Lent; Beach. Bathing can be indulged iu by old and young, tbe bathing grounds being made doubly pleasant by tbe protection from the winds which the jetty affords. No life has ever been lost in surf bath ing at Newport. Pleasure seekers are beginning to ar rive, every boat bringing from 20 to 40. Last Sunday there were five steamers lying at Newport, one of them being tbe Columbine, the government light bouse ship. The Oregon Pacific train arrives at Yaquina City at 6 p. m. and passengers reach Newport at 6 p. m. All are delighted with the safe, rapid and pleasant ride over tbis road, as web as with tbe obliging conduct of its oil! cera. Many go to their cottages on Nye Creek to remain six or eight weeks, while others occupy rooms iu Newport which they have previously engaged. Board at hotels from $9 to $12 per week, according to accommodations desired. In private familes, board can be ob tained for $1 per day. But two persons by renting a furnished room, and board ing themselves, may live comfurtably aud well for from 5.50 to to per week. Dr. Jeffreys and Mr. J. I. Thumpaon, of Salem, have thiir families here, aud expect to remain some six or eigLt weiks. Tbe latter occupies a cottage on the hill, with a beautiful view of tbe bay, though a loug aud ateep hill must be ascended to reach them. Thompson Baa the exertion of his lungs rrqulred In tbe ascent, has already eulargad their capacity so that he feels them bulging out from uuder his armpits, and be thinks before the easou is over lie will have more luugs than he can fl.id any use fur, but believes be can tie them on bis buck, und hold them lu reserve foi Awarded Highest Honors World 'a Fair.
