This being tho or dinary architecture of tho place, yon may imagine something of tho splendor of Governor Felix's residence. In a room of that, palaco, floor tessellated, windows curtained, ceiling fretted, the whole sccno affluent with Tyriau pur plo and statues and pictures ami caiv ings, sat a very dark complexioncd man of tho namo of Felix, and besido him a woman of extraordinary beauty, whom ho had stolen by breaking up another domestic circle. As that grand old missionary proceeded with his remarks the stoop begins to go out of his shoulders, and Jio rises up, and his countenance is illn mined with tho glories of a futuro life, and his shackles rattlo and grind as hn Hits his fettered arm and with it hurls upon his abashed auditors tho bolts of God's indignation. Folix grew very whito about tho lips. His heart beat unevenly. Ho put his hand to his brow as though to stop tho quickness and violenoo of his thoughts. Ho drow his robo tighter about him, as under a sudden chill. His eyes glare, and his knees shake, and as he clutches tho sido of his chair in a very paroxysm of terror ho orders tho sheriff to take Paul back to tho guardroom. "Folix trembled and Haid: Go thy way for this time. When I havo a convenient season, I will call for thee." A young man camo ono night to our services, with pencil in hand, to carica ture tho wholo sccno and make mirth of thoso who should express any anxioty about their souls, but I mot him at tho door, his faco very whito, tears running down his cheek, as ho said, "Do you think thero is any chanco for mo?" Fo lix trembled, and so may God grant it may bo so with others. Clinging to Their Sin. I proposo to givo you two or three reasons why I tliiiik Folix sent Paul back to tho guardroom and adjourned this wholo subject of religion. Tho first reason was, ho did not want to givo up his sins. Ho looked around. Thero was Drusilla. He know that when ho bo camo a Christian ho must send her back to Azizus, her lawful husband, and ho said to himself, "IwUinsK moacsiruo tion of my immortal soul sooner than I will do that." How many thero are now who cannot get to bo Christians because they will not abandon thoir sins! In vain all their prayers and all their churchgoing. You cannot keep theso darling sins and win heaven, and now somo of you will havo to decido between tho wino cup and unlawful amusements and lascivious gratifica tions on tho ono hand and eternal sal vation on the other. Delilah sheared the locks of Samson; Saloino danced Horod into tho pit; Drusilla blocked up the- way.tu heaven for Felix. Yet when I present tho sub ject now I fear that Bomo of you will say: "Not quite yet. Don't be bo pre cipitate in your demands. I havo a few ticket yet that I. havo to use. I havo a few engagement that I 'jau&t keep. I want to stay a littlo longer in the whirl of conviviality a fow moro guffaws of unclean laughter, a few moro steps on tho road to death, and then, sir, I will listen to what you say. It is businchs in tho btoro losses, gains, unfaithful employees. "Go Thy Way Tor TliU Time." It is business in your law office sub poenas, writs you havo to write out, pa pers you havo to file, arguments you havo to make. It is your medical pro fession, with its broken nights and tho exhausted anxieties of lifo hanging upon your treatment. It is your real es tato office, your business with landlords and tenants and tho failuro of men to meet their obligations with you. Aye, with somo of thoso who aro here it is tho aunoyanco of tho kitchen, and the sitting roqm, and tho parlor tho wear ing economy of trying to meet largo ex penses with a small income. Ten thou sand voices of "business, business, bi:si ness" drown the voico of tho eternal Spirit, silencing tho voico of tho advanc ing judgment day, overcoming tho voice of eternity, and they cannot hear; they cannot listen. They say, "Go thy way for this time. " Somo of you look upon your goods, look upon your profession, yon look upon your memorandum books, and you seo the demands that aro made this very week upon your timo and your patienco and your money, and while I am entreating you about your boul and tho danger of procrastination you say: "Go thy way for this time. Whon I havo a convenient season,! will call for thee. " Oh, Felix, why bo bothered about tho affairs of this world so much moro than I about tho affairs of eternity? Do you not i know that when death comes you will havo to stop business, though it bo in tho most exacting period of it between tho payment. of tho money and tho tak ing of tho receipt? Tho moment ho comes you will havo to go. Death waits for no man, however high, how over low. Will you put your office, will you put your shop in comparison with tho affairs of an eternal world, affairs that involve thrones, palaces, dominions eternal? Will you put 200 acres of ground against immensity? Will you put 40 or CO years of your lifo against millions of ages? Oh, Felix, you might better postpouo everything else, for do you not know that tho up holstering of Tyrian purplo in your pal ace will fade, and tho marblo blocks of Ciesarea will cruniofe, ami tno ureaicwa tor at tho beach, made of great blocks of stono CO feet long, must givo way before tho perpotual wash of tho sea, but tho redemption that Paul offers you will bo forever? And yet and yet and yet you wavo him back to tho guard room, saying: "Go thy way for this time. When I havo a convenient sea son, I will call for tlite." The 1'ua or of Men. Again, Felix adjourned this subject of religion and put off Paul's argument because ho could not givo up tho hon ors of tho world. Ho was afraid some how ho would bo compromised himsolf in this matter. Remarks ho mado after ward showed him to bo intensely ambi tious. Oh, how ho hugged tho favor of men! I never saw tho honors of this world in their hollowness and hypocrisy so much as in tho life and death of that wonder ful man, Charles Sumner. As ho went toward tho placo of burial, oven Inde pendence hall in Philadelphia asked that his remains stop thero on thoir way to Boiton. Tho flags wero at half mast, and tho minuto guns on Boston com mon throbbed after his heart had ceased to beat. Was it always so? While ho lived, how censured of legislative reso lutions; how caricatured of tho picto rials; how charged with every motive mean and ridiculous; how all tho urns of scorn and hatred and billiugsgato emptied upon his head; how, when struck down in senato chamber, thero wero hundreds of thousands of peoplo who said, "Good for him; serves him right;" how ho had to put the ocean botween him nnd his maligiiers that ho might havo a littlo peace, and how, when ho went off sick, thoy said ho was broken hearted becanso ho could not get to bo president or secretary of stato I O commonwealth of Massachusetts, who is that man that sloops in your pub lic hall covered with garlands and wrapped in tho stars and stripes? Is that tho man who, only a fow mouths before, you denounced as tb" foo'of re publican nud democratic institutions? Is that tho same man? Yo American people, yo could not by ono wt-ek of fn ncral oulogium and. nowspaper leaders, which tho dead senator could neither read nor hoar, atouo for 26 years of maltreatment and caricature. When I seo a man like that, pursued by all tho hounds of tho political kenuel so long as he lives and then buried un der a great pilo of garlands mid amid tho lamentations of a wholo natiou, I say to mysolf; What an uuuttcrably hypocritical thing is all humau ap plause ami all human favor! You took 25 years in trying to pull down his famo aud then take 25 years in trying tr, iinild his monument My friends, was there ever a better commentary on tho hollownois of all earthly favor? If there aro vouug men who read this who are pjstpouiug religion in order that thoy may have tho favors of this world, let mo pen.uado th in of their complete .n. if T-nn aro lookiuK forward to gubernatorial, fceitatorial or presidential chair. Can it bo that there is now any young man Baying: "Let bav0 Pluical office, let mo have somo of tho high, positions of trust nnd power, and then I will attend to religion, but not now. 'Go thy way for this timo. When I hare a convenient season, I will call for thee!' " And now my subject takes a deopor tone, nud it shows what a dangerous thing is this deferring of religion. When Paul's chain rattled down tho marblo stairs of Felix, that was Folix'a last chanco for heaven. Judging from his character afterward, ho was repro bato and abandoned. And so was Dru iilla. Ouo day in southern Italy thero was a trembling of tho earth, and tho air got black with smoko intershot with liquid rocks, and Vesuvius rained upon Drusilla aud upon her sou a horrible tempest of ashes nnd fire. Thoy did not roject religion. They only put it off. They did not understand that that day, that that hour when Paul stood before them, was tho pivotal hour upon which everything was poised, and that it tip ped tho wrong way. Thoir convenient season camo when Paul and his guards man entered tho palaco. It went away when Paul and his guardsman left Havo you never seen men waiting for a convenient beasou? Thero is such a great fascination about it that, though you may havo great respect to tho truth of Christ, yet somehow thero is in yours soul tho theught: "Not quito yet It Is not timo for mo to beconio a Chris tian." I say to a boy, "Seek Cluist." Ho says: "No. Wait until I got to bo n young man. " I say to tho young man, "Seek Christ." Ho says, "Wait until 1 como to midlife. " 1 meet tho samo per son in midlife, nnd I say, "Seak Chiist. " Ho says, "Wait until I get old." I- meet tho same person in old ago and say to him, "Seek Christ" Ho says, "Wait until 1 am on my dying bed. " 1 am called to his dying couch. His last moments havo come. I bond over tho couch and listen for his last words. I havo partially to guess what they aro by tho motion of his lips, ho is ( o feeble, but rallying himself ho whis pers until I can hear him say, "1 am waiting lor a more convenient season," and ho is gone! Now Ih the Time. 1 can tell you when your convenient season will come. 1 can tell you the year. It will bo 1804. I can tell you what kind of n day it will bo. It will bo tho Sabbath day. I can toll you what hour it will bo. It will bo between 8 and 10 o'clock. In other words, it is now. Do you ask mo how I know this is your convenient season? I know it because you aro here, and becauso tho Holy Spirit is here, and becauso tho elect sons and daughters of God aro praying for your redemption. Ah, 1 know it is your convenient?' beasou becauso somo of you, liko Felix, tremble as all your past life comes upon you with its sin, and all tho futuro lifo comes upon you with its ter ror. This night air is aglaro with torch es to show you up or to show you dowiu It is rustling with wings to lift you into light or smito you into despair, and thoro is a rushing to and for, and a beat ing against tho door of your souls with agrcitthundprof emphasis, telling you, "Now, now is tho best timo, as it may bo tho only timo." May God Almighty forbid that any of you, my brethren or sisters, act tho part of Felix and Drusilla and put away this great subject If you aro going to bo saved over, why not begin tonight? Throw down your sins nud tako tho Lord's pardon. Christ has been tramp ing after you many a day. An Indian aud a whito man became Christiana Tho Indian, almost as soon as ho heard tho gospel, believed aud was saved, but tho whito man struggled on in darkness for a long while before ho found light After their peace in Christ tho white man said to the Indian, "Why was it that 1 was kept so long in tho dark ness and you immediately found peace?" Tho Indian replied: "I will tell you. A princo conies along, and ho offers you a coat. You look at your coat, and you say, 'My coat is good enough,' and you refuse his offer, but tho princo comes along, and ho offers mo tho coat, and 1 look at my old blanket, and I throw that away and take his ofrer. You, sir," continued tho Indian, "aro clinging to your own righteousness, you think you aro ' good enough, and yon keep your own righteouness, but I havo nothing, nothing, and so when Jesus offers mo pardon and pcaco I simply tako it" My reader, why not now throw away tho woruout blanket of your sin and tako tho robo of a Saviour's righteous uojs a robo so white, so fair, so lus trous, that no fuller on earth can whit en it?
