Tho freaks I had this time didn't do a

I'm dod rotted glad I got rid of 'em.
"That.there only genooine mormaidof

No guesses were hazarded.
"Well," the sideshowman said, "sho

hire a chiropodist to travel round with
the show for her special benefit, an I
fired her. I was willin to pay for corn

Tho sideshowman stopped long enough
to finish his beer. "My ossified man,"
he went on, "he wasanother just like the

Down in Mobilo I .had 'em all quartered
in a hotel, an as I was walkin through

of courtesy toward the fair sex. I never
heard such talk, an I give him notice
there an then, for my show was highly
moral, an I was nfraid he would learn
bad talk to the wild man of Borneo."
"What was the matter?" asked tho un
sophisticated advanco agent.
"Why," replied the sideshowman as ho
pnlled on his overcoat and prepared to
go, "tho snake charmer wanted to put
him across tho tops of two chairs, so'ssho
could use him for an ironin board an
iron out some handkerchiefs, an ho

Trepidation.
There was about her a poise that comes

Ho was only human.
"Why, my darling?" he demanded in

her curved lashes, us sho had been taught

"Because, George," sho murmured,
"you aro tho thirteenth, and I am super

Discussing a Legal 1'olnt.
Probably no one in town enjoys a joke
better than Major Baldwin, and he never
allows to pass unimproved an opportu
nity of making one. At tho party at Mr.
Roberts' the other evening ho rapped the
company to order and stated that a party
had recently come to his office and asked
a question on a legal point which ho wis
unable to answer. As the district attor
ney was present and as the question and
answer would interest every one pres
ent, he would repeat them. The ques
tion was, "Could a man in North Da
kota marry his widow's sister?"
The district attorney promptly answer
ed that he could if he wanted to, and the
company concurred in his decision.
But when tho major quietly remarked
that this was the first time ho had heard
that a dead map could marry, there were
explosions of laughter which continued
for several minute's. North Dakota Re

It was in a piano factory, and it being

"Bill," said tho manager to the man
who sweeps tho office, "I want you to go
down tho street and tune a piano for a
family. They're in a great hurry, or I
wouldn't ask you to do it, but the regu
lar tuner has gone for the day."
'"I can't tune pianos," replied the man.
"Oh, yes, you can," said the dealer
cheerfully. "Just open thelid, and you'll
see a lot of keys. Give 'em a few twists
so as to. tighten the wires. Thump on tho
keyboard like a crazy man for 15 min
utes. Charge them 4 shillings and como
back in time to put the coal on tho fire."
And the sweeper did it.
That evening the daughter of tho

Embroidered cashmere is much liked
and will bo made up with laco and rib
bons. New costumes show coats with fronts
extending only to the waistliueand long
skirts at the sides and back.
White dotted muslin is to bo one of
tho popular materials for this summer.
The making-and trimming aro modified
to suit tho style of the wearer.
A great deal of red is used for girls of
all ages. Even young ladies not infre
quently appear in the most glowing scar
let. This is pretty when modified with
black or blue.
Evening and dancing dresses are trim
med with festoons of lace. Some of these
aro headed by loops, puffs or twisted
folds of silk ns a finish for the upper
edge of the lace.
Half inch wide ribbons in two colors
aro used for drawing into beading on
dresses for young-ladies and girls. Somo
of theso ribbons aro white, with red, black
or other colored edges. Many all satin
ribbons are also used for this purpose.
Among the desirable early summer
dresses is a navy bluo plain gingham em
broidered in cardinal. Tho skirt is made
with panels and a narrow flounco at the
sides and back. Tho waist is fitted over
a lining, and the sleeves are in leg o'
mutton shape, with embroidery cuffs.

GEMS OF THOUGHT.
Deep love can do much even when in
deep poverty.
When you btiry an evil'babit, do not
visit the grave too often.
"Pessimism," says Archbishop Ireland,
"is the faith of cowards."
The usual fortune of complaint is to
excito contempt niore than pity.
Philanthropy is often not the love of
man, but the love of being thought to
love him.
Men of earnest thought and contempla
tion exercise a wonderful influence over
men of action.
Most of our misfortunes are more sup
portable than the comments of our
friends upon them.
No good man can ever be happy when
he is unfit for tho career of simple and
commonplace duty.
Duty is carrying on promptly and faith
fully the affairs now beore you. It is to
fulfill the clniina of today.
If you are poor, yet pure and modest
ly aspiring, keep a vase of flowers on
your table, and they will help to main
tain your dignity and secure for you con
sideration and delicacy of behavior.
