Large Merchantlle Establishment Wiped Oat and Several Small Losses. Gervaib, Oct 24. At 8 o'clock this morning a fire broke out in tbe Cole man &, Goulet's mercbantlle establish ment. Tbe building was entirely con sumed, occupants of the upper story barely escaping with their lives. Tbe loss is as follews: Coleman & Goulet, $15,000, insured for 7,600; Wm. J. Clarke, printing office, $800; insurance, (400; T. B. Walker, bootmaker, and Mickel & Zelgler, each (300, "no insur ance. at SALEM. at 0 a. m. the Ore department was or dered out and Capital Engine boarded on a flat car in a most expeditious man ner. Inside of ten minutes after word reached tbe city the yard engine pulled out for Geryais, but was stopped by a telegram announcing that danger of tbe whole town burning was over, as a building next to the Poorman bank had fallen and checked the flames from spreading. Re buttal evidence In behalf of accussed minister Is being beard this afternoon. Reception. The ladies of Unity chuioh have arranged a social and re ception for next Friday evening at the church. The occasion will be taken advantage of to have all the friends of the church meet Dr. Copeland's family who arrived iu the city on Thursday last. The DeMolay Installation. Tbe officers of this nev lodge will be Installed under the new charter tonight at tbelr ball. Eminent Grand Com mander, S. M. Yoran, of Eugene, and C. B. Lansing, Mich., Oct. 24. An act of tbe last legislature, permitting women to vote at municipal elections, was de clared unconstitutional by the supreme court tbls morning. At the Top of a Wheel. Chicago, Oct. 24. James D. Hutch inson and Lottie Zickley, a young cou ple from Wankegan, Ilia., were mar ried this afternoon at the top of the Ferris wheel at tbe world's fair grounds. Doable Identification. Battle Creek, Micb., Oct. 24. Dr. Sweetlaud, of Edwardaburg, Mich., Identified one of the bodies from the Uraud Trunk wreck, as that of bis sis ter, Mrs. Eveline Aldrich.and the body was shipped to tbat place last night. Now J. A FIGHT WITH CHINESE. Try to Smuggle Themselves In and Resist Arrest. Port Townse.nd, Oct. 24. News has been received here by Collector Saunders of a fight between 14 contra band Chinese and a settler named Do ran, at Wickersbam, a small town 25 miles south of tbe Canadian boundary line. Doran fell upon a bunch of Mon- goliane by accideut and tried to arrest them. The Chinese resisted, and in the tight which occurred one Celestial was wounded in the knee. The rest escaped. Doran then notified Deputy Collector Maloney, who secured a posse of two citizens aud started in pursuit. The wounded Chinese was captured and sent back to town. His injury was prououueed not serious, Tbe gov ernment o Ulcers then proceeded upon a regular organized man-hunt for the dozeu Chinamen who had escaped. These latter must have become hard pressed, as all in their flight dropped luggage, bIx of them losing their head gear. Today Deputy Collector Maloney wired that three more contrabands bad been run down, makiug a total of five out of 14 known to be in tbe band who so far have been captured. The rest of tbe gang will, it is expected, also be run dowu.
