It wan thought that the boy tried to jump on tho train Just as It started, or ho may have been crawling under a car. Privato Bank Fails. Chicago. His., June 3. Herman BohaiTner & Co., nnvntc bankers, have made an assignment. The 11 rm Is tho largest privato concern, In Chicago or the Northwest, dealing exclusively in Commercial paper. The firm is also about the oldest or its kind In Chicago. No statement of tho bank's affairs was filed with the application for a receiver. The assignment was made to the Amer ican Trust and Savings bank. To add to excltement,lt was rumored IhutScbafT uer bad committed suicide. Investi gation developed the fact that the as signment was the dlreot result of the dis appearance of Herman Scbuttner, sen ior member of the firm. It is said that tho bank has been in straits for some days and that it its d'illcultles preyed very heavily ou Schufluer's mind. He left the bank yesterday afternoon nnd has not been seen since, though dili Kont search bus been id ado for him. Friends fear mental aberration. Tho cause of the fulluro was too much com mercial paper. What Briggs Will Do. New Yokk, June 3. The Rev. Churles Augustus Briggs relumed from Washington. When asked If be bad heard the aotlon of the Presbyte rian general assembly iu his case, be replied: "Yes, J learned of the sen tence against mo, although I left Washington early In tho afternoon. But I deem it best not to talk on the matter at present." "Do you still occupy the Edward Robinson chair of blblcal theology in the seminary?" was asked. "Most certainly I do. Is there any thing in the tonus of my endowment of tho chair or the rules of the semi nary vbich requires that tills professor ship must be held by a minister of the Presbyterian church? Not at all." "Has the decision of the geueral as sembly iu suspending you from the ministry made any cbauge witli your relations with the Union seminary?" "None whatever," replied tho doctor. "The geueral nasembiy has not con tributed a dollar to tho Union semi nary. The seminary la supported'al most wholly by New York merchants and others." It was learned from others conuected with tho Union seminary this evening that Prof. Briggs would go right on just as If nothing had happened, and he will be sustained in his action by the board of directors and members of the faculty of the iustitute. McCormlck retreated and pro cured a Winchester rifle at sight of which the riotcrd lied. His men, bow- ever, all quit, At Mason, nognn King's camp they struck and wounded Peter King, brother of the contractor. A freight train on the Santa Fe killed ono of the strikers who was on the track near Rome. The strikers number about 2000 men, 1,200 of them being employed on the drainage canal, The cause of the strike is that the stone companies re duced wages from eighteen and ono naif cents to 11 neon cents an uour. Tho striko also extends to Juliet, where from 300 to 400 men are out because or the same reduction.
