Chicago, Feb. 13. It was 84 years
yesterday sluce the state of Kentucky
nave Abraham Lincoln to the United
titates, aud iu very many parts of the
country the nnuiversary of the birth of
the martyred president will he appropri
ately celebrated.
Owing to this fact the anniversary
camo on Sunday, aud the celebration
in many cases will exteud over two
days.
In this city there was a mass meet
ing at Central music hull, to which
place members of the Liucolu, Hamll
ton aud Marquette Clubs marched in
procession.
A memorial musical was rendered
and an oration delivered by Rev. Dr.
Carlos Marty n, who was a personal
friend of Lincoln, also of Wendell
Phillips.
There will also bo several bauquets
and public meetings on Monday.

can club last night gave a Lincoln an
niversary dinner. Moro than 300 men
distinguished iu nearly every walk ol
life were present, and orators for the
occasion cume from all parts of tin
country each aud all typifying and

of national politics lo tho club. Presi
dent John ti. Smith, pie.-lded. At hie
right sat Secretary of the Treasury
Charles Foster and at his left Colonel
Robert G. Ingersoll. Others at guests'
lubles were: Chauncey M. Depew,
Senator Squire, of Wushiugtou, aud

Col. Ingersoll responded to tho toast
"Abraham Lincoln." Ho said in purl:
"Abruham Llucoln was strange, ming
ling tragic, heroic aud grotesque; fi per
souillcaiiou of all that was gentle, Just,
humane aud honest, merciful, laugh
uble, lovable, aud divine, and all those
r.terliug attributes he consecrated for
use of man. Lincoln had no ancestors,
he had uo fellows aud no successor.
Hia was the grandest ilguto of our
times aud the gentlest memory of our
world."

London, Feb. 12. In the commons
yesterday Balfour spoke at length iu
favor of extending tho .debate on the
address. Gladstone objected to the
manner in which tho extension of the
debate was introduced without previous
notice. Balfour replied with spirit that
tie bad not only given notice, but also
debated the question lust evening when
the right honorable gentleman opposed
wuh more agreeably occupied. This
slur had an unexpected eilect on the
house. The liberal aud Irish members
answered it with cries of "Shame" aud
Jeers, which completely drowned the
opposition cheers. When Gladstone
rose to answer he was trembling with
Indignation. Iu a voice shaking with
auger he thundered eut:
With due regard to circumstance
and time, I have endeavored to serve
the house to the best of my ability.

Manchester would have shown better
taste, would have better fulfilled the
duties of tho position which he occu
pied, If he spared reference to my

Repeated rheers followed Gladstone's

Greenock, Scotland, Feb. 13. The
Pomeraulau encountered boisterous
weather immediately after leaving port.
It was thought tho wiud would soon
blow itself out, but instead of abating,
the galo iucceased in severity uutll the
day or the disaster, Feb. 4th, it dawned
with a Mghtrul galo raglug aud tre
mendously high sea running. Hatches
were. buttered down aud covered with
turpaullua, voutllators were turned lee
ward, aud every precaution dictated by
good seamanship had been taken iu
prevent tho water from getting below.
Several seas were shipped, but they
did no damage. Suddenly a tremend
ous sea reared its crest u short distance
uhead or the steamer as she plunged
down tho wavo. Before she could rise,
the sea came ovor tho starboard bow
aud tons of green water aft. Almost
ut ttio samo time fulling waves astern
camo aboard. Tho deck saloon, chart
houso, bridge and boats wore smashed
to pieces aud partly washed overboard.
The deck was covered with an almost
luextricablo mass of wreckage aud ut
most confusion reigned. At 11 rat the
full extent of tho disaster was noi
known. The steamer began to pay ofl
before tho wind and sea, aud it was at
once seen that tho quarter-mast had
been carried overboard. When the
sea boarded every man about deck
who saw It coming, grabbed hold ou
stanchions or anything else convenient
