Tho Address of Mayor Hemp stead of Chicago. Chicago, Oct.- 21. By Associa ted Pnm Following are extracts from tbe address of Most Rov. John Ireland, delivered to an Immense gathering at the auditerium: The greatest of things is mind. Mlud, conscious, intelligent potent to put into action thought and wish, differentiates itself absolutely from matter, rises above it to immeasur able heights, dominates and moves the unthinking world. Mind Is the causative power In all orderly results. Without it, there Is nothing, or thnreis aimless move ment and obaos. The universe Is the supreme mind God lu create. Within the uulveiso there Is created mind mau. Whatever, outside the workings of the First Cause, comes lu tho universe of beauty, goodness and progress, comes through man. Ho is, within-the limits of God's creation, a second creator. Tho manifestations of mind in men are of varied measures, Tbe degree of mind lifts man above man: the higher tho mind, the groater and the nobler the man. Through soenes of past ages, over which fauoy delights to hover amid Columbian celebrations, Cordova's court, tho hillside of La Rablda, Falos harbor, or savage Guanabanl one object more thau ought else obtains attentlan. We seek It out; we fix upon it tbe soul's eager eye. It is the figure of Christopher Co lumbus. The picture, Columbus unseen, whatever the remaining firms, whatever tbe coloring, Is In complete, meaningless; the spirit ia absent; it Is void of inspiration. Co lumbus is the mlud, creating, direct ing the scenes, bringing into them motive and purpose, producing and co-ordinating results. All else in tho scenes has valuo so far as it re sponds to the thoughts of ColumbuB,' so far as It aids him to execute his plans. The queenly and generous Isabella, tho patient and fur-seeing Juan Perez do Marchena, claim, our esteem because mind in them under stood and followed superior mind in Columbus. In all places In all occurrences, tbe sublime, the worshipful power Is mind. Man, mind Incorporate, Is the greatest being in tbe universe. Tho men among men, mind tower ing aboyo common mind, arc tbo worthiest of all objects of vision and study. This day four hundred yoaro ago America first unfolded to the eyes of civilized races ber beauty and ber wealth. Fraugh, Indeed, with solemn meaning for the wholo world of meu was the occurrence. Few expressions recorded in story re vealed great things coming as did tho word which, rising in swelling choruse8,rent the air above the decks of the weary and wave-beaten cara vels of tbe admiral of tho seas'land I land I Tbo new land was In sight, o fruitful in resources, so pregnant In possibilities. A new world was given to human longings, to human action; a new era dawned for man kind, a marvellous epoch of human progress. Since tbe preaching of the Christlau religion, nothing has lias happened of suoli great Import for the human race ns the discovery of America. What has occurred during the past four centuries abundantly proves the assertion. What will occur In tbe future will set It out In yet clearer light. TVith much reason America and her lUr continents Keep sacred the cenlen- ulal anniversary. The time is most atwplelotw. TUB MAYOR'S. ADDRHS9 was uext delivered tendering the freedom of the city of Chicago to, the representatives of the nation and states and countries assembled. He said In part: L ess than a century ago the site of this young city was unknown; to day a million and a half people support her honor, enterprise and thrift. Her annual commerce of one billion and a half .tells tbe elo quent story of her material great ness. Her liberality to all nations and all creeds Is boundless, broad as hilmanlty and high as the dome of heaven. Rule Brltania, tbo Marseilles,- die Waoht am Bhein, and every folk song of tho older world has drifted over the Atlantic's stormy waves, and as each echo, growing fainter with advancing leagues, has reached this spot It has, been merged into that one grand choruB, "My Country 'tis of Thee, Sweet Laud of Liberty, of Tbeel Hing." This, sirs, la the American city of your choice; her gates are open, ber people at your service. To you and those you represent we oflor greet ing, hopltallty and love. To the Old World, whose repre sentatives grace this occasion, whose governments aro In full accord with this enterprise so full of meaning to tbem and to us, to that old world whoso children braved unruly seas and treacherous storms to found u new Btato In an unknown land, we give greeting too, as children greet a parent in some new home. Welcome to you men of older civilizations to this youug oity whose most ancient landmark was built within tbe span ofajjpreeont Ufa. Our hospitalities and our welcome we now extend without regard to nationality, creed or race. Deafness Oan't be Cured, by local application, as they cannot reach the diseased portion of tbe oar. There Is only one way tocure deafness, and that Is by constitu tional remedies. Deafness is caused by an lullamed condition of the mucous lining of tho Eustachian Tubo. When this tube gets Inflam ed you havo a rumbling sound or Imperfect hearing, and when it is entirely closed, deafness Is tho re sult, aud unless the inilamatlon can be taken out and tbe tube restored to Its normal condition, bearing will bo destroyed forever; nine cases out of ten are caused by catarrh, which is nothing but an Inflamed condi tion of tbe mucous surfaces. We will give one hundred dollars for any case of deafness (caused by catarrh) that we cannot cure by taking Hall's Catarrh Cure. Bend for circular, free, F. J.
