K I should leave my home, and go away To pass a year and day llid other scenes, should I not early find That I had left behind Jl portion of my life's felicity Which could not follow me? And If, when the allotted time had passed, I turned my steps at last To enter at the old familiar door Of kindly home onro more, Might I not learn what my heart had Bought, With back returning thought, Was missing still In homo's securest spot And I could find it not? Might I not vainly wander to and fro, Seeking again to know That fond completeness of felicity Which could not follow me? Ah, ycsl and If a longing soul in heaven Free passpnrt might bo given To come again anil tread earth's weary soil With feet unused to toll To leave the converse of eternity. And llugci lovingly O'tr earth's ioor haunts, tho playgrounds of those years Whose smiles wcro dimmed with tears, So would it llnd that nothing hero below Was what it ued to know That all the peaco which memory had cast Around the cherished past, All the familiar kindly home delight Had vaniched from it quite. Soon would It spread its wings with sigh of pain- Too thankful to retain The power of entering heaven's open dooC, And leaving novermoro. Let us not weep, thon, though we lose the light That made this earth so bright Though all the single sunbeams, one by ono, Bo gathered to tho sun; Assured that there. In fullness rich and free. They will restored be. And home, tho dearest name that we can know On weary earth below, Shall bo a mother wholly reconciled To each desponding child. Cornhllt Magazine. A Paradoxical Animal. One of tho most peculiar creatures known to tho student of oddities in natural history is the omithorhyn chus of Australia, that "land of in verted older." It lays eggs like a bird, suckles its young like other mammals, and in general appear ance and habits resoinble3 the beaver of this country and Europe. One variety of the ornithorhynchus is covered with hair, has webbed feet and a bill liko a duck. Another and a larger species has a large hooked bill liko a curlew, but in all other re spects (except its peculiar egg laying habits) is a peifect porcupine, quills and all I Tho first specimens of this' curious creature sent to tho United States were consigned to tho American Mu seum of Natural Ilistory, New York, in 1S81. A year later Professor H. A. Ward, the great Rochester (N. Y.) naturalist, secured thirty fino speci mens of littlo ornithorhynchi, which ho says "ara tho most paradoxical products of a paradoxical country." St. Louis Republic. Itattan Comes from Singapore. It possesses, bo aides this, groat firmness and strength, and a chair of rattan could bo thrown from an oxpresa train and picked up intact. Rattan is thoroforo used for such ai tides as baskets nnd lighter ornamental furniture. Each has its use, tho rattan, however, being bet tor adapted for working up into in tricate designs, so eagerly sought in modem artistic- furniture. Now Or leans Picayune.
