Snobs and million aires who travel In their own yachts and special cars may tarn np their noses at it, bnt tho chances ore that in the next generation tho snob's son will bo one of the waiters who runs with a tray of sandwiches to tho car window and slops coffee over tho dust cloak of tho chenp excursionist. Who knows? Say that tho cheap excursionist is gawky; that ho parados all his private affairs in n loud voice beforo the amused and sneering city person in the street car and elsawjioro. The vory placo for him to learn to kcop his arms and legs closo about him and his voice within the low, soft limit which Shakespeare prescribes is tho great city. He could not visit that city only for tho cheap oscursion which our American railways are learning better and hotter how to provide for the people. Tho only way for tho boor nnd tho tough to learn that a clean car floor is no place on which to expectorate or to deposit either peanut shells or chicken bones is to go abroad and seo that well bred people do nono of these nasty things. It is an important element in civiliza tion and culture, the cheap excursion. It enables tho inhabitants of different portions of this country to see ono an other and note tho phases of develop ment in each district. It takes away tho besotted Bolf conceit of tho ignorant New Yorker to go to Chicago and Min neapolis and find thero broader, finer streets and better city government and architecture than thero are at home. It lifts the Intelligent, eager farm boy and girl into a veritable fairy land of delight when it takes them on tho wings of steam to see with their own wide, bright eyes that Niagara or Mammoth cave or magnificent dome of tho Capitol at Washington which they have read about ever since they could lead at all. It destroys provincialism, ignorance and local self conceit; it makes the inhabitants of this huge coun try acquainted with ono another, caus ing thorn to feel that we are indeed one great, united people. It polishes away crudities, fuses common interests and makes us all a wiser, better mannered, more cosmopolitan nation. The railways improve tho accommo dations of theso choap excursion train? yearly, as they ought to do. If tho sleeping car rates were not so high, a still larger number of cultivated and refined travelers would patronizo tho cheap excursion in preforonco to staying at home. J California Almonds. Mr. Henry J. Philpott, whose name ought to be Fhilopena, considering his subject, writes in Tho Popular Science Monthly about almond culture in Cali fornia. We find from his papor that almonds to tho value of $813,278 are an nually imported into this country; that, too, under a duty of flye cents a pound for unshelled and 7 cents a pound f oi shelled ones. An almond and peach tree are much nliko, except that tho peach has itb fruit on tho outsido of its shell, the almond inside. The almond nut while growing looks like a grcon peach. We learn from the papor of Mr. Phil pott that tho raising of an almond tree with any cortalnty that its fruit will be the same as tho nut of the graft or bud which you put into it is about as uncer tain as killing a mosquito by slapping at him when he Inserts his bill into your cheek. The almond tree is a tough old eport. If, howevor, you can bring It down to business, an almond orchard requires less caro than any other orchard except one of prune trees. At four years from tho seed the tree begins to bear and yields on the average $100 an acre. An almond orchard Is not trou bled with 'insect pests, as othor fruit trees aro, and its bloom is tho most gorgeous and fragrant of floral massing. The flowers aro whito with a dash of pink. The-voriety of almond known as the paper shelled is tho best for tho con sumer to buy. Finally all almonds that como to market are first bleached with sulphur fumes to whiten the shells. It has been reported, likewise contra dicted, that labor organizations aro in troducing military drill Into their pro gramme. There is an excellent military organization already open to ablobodied men who want military drill. Its ad vantages aro exceptional, and so fully does it meet all the warlike needs of tho time that thero is no call or room for any other military club or socioty. Morcovor, it lias tho countonnnco, au thority and aid of tho United States government, and it exists convenient to hand in every state of the' Union. Its name is the national guard. A clockraakor of Warsaw has been six years working on a clock which ho intends to exhibit at the World's fair in Chicago. It is as wonderful as tho clock in the cathedral at Strasburg, It rep resents a complete railway station, with moving trains, telegraphers, porters, passengers and a ticket ofllco. Every quarter hour all those Wako to life, A bell rings, the engino whistles and the train moves off after tho passengers have gono aboard, and all subsides into stillness nntil the next quarter hour. Yon boro people as much when you talk to them about your family and rela tives as when you talk about yourself. Here is how Oliver Wendell Holmes describes the fashionable 0 o'clock tea: "It is giggle, gabble, gobble and. git," Everybody knows what It is, aud that Ja the reason they go to Hel laabraud'a for tbat pure ica oraaaa oda. The Argument Used BY the makers of the second-class baking powders to induce the dealer to push them off on Royal consumers is that they cost less than Royal and afford the dealer much more profit. But you, madam, are charged the same price ,.1 for them as for the absolutely pure Royal, which is perfectly combined from the most highly refined and expensive materials. The lower cost of the" others is caused by the cheaji, impure materials - . used in them, and the haphazard way in which they are thrown together. Do you wish to pay the price of the Royal & for an inferior baking powder, made from ini- -., pure goods, of 27 per cent, less strength? If i you buy the other powders, insist upon having K a corresponding reduction in price. A LITTLE CALCULATION. An Ingenious Scheme of Soma English Swindlers Exposed. Perhaps many readers havo been favored with a letter from a friend in something like tho undermen tioned terms. Tho followinar is a copy of ono received by the writer, (names being fictitious) : "No. 0 For tho rebuilding. of the orphan homes at Queen's square,' Bwindletown, 1,000 is required. You are requested (1) to send 3d. in. Btamp? for that object; (2) to make two copies of this lotter, putting at tho head of each the number sue-' ceeding that heading this. Send theso to two friends, requesting them to do likewise. When the number 100 is reached the ball stops rolling. Please do not lot tho ohain break in your hands." Hero follows a list of patrons, tho name of the lady secretary, and last ly the name and address of tho writer. Tho scheme looks well enough, and does not seem nt all extravagant. When, however, we come to analyze it we find that tho ball must stop rolling long ere the coveted 100 be reached simply for want of pooplo to carry it on. To make our meaning plain to tho curious wo will suppose that tho chain is unbroken, and that the 60,-' 109,732,422,127,898,073,643,950,830 ro cipiente of letter No. 99 havo duly written to their 112,339,404,844,254, 790,147,087,900,072 friends. ! Wo will furthor suppose that the wholo 224,078,929,088,609,592,294,175, 801,344 persons thus addressed have responded with their threepenny pieces. Tho sum to a penny thus raised would only amount to 2,808, 480,021,100,300,903,077,197,516 15s. 3d. Calling tho world's population 2,000,000,000 and allowing 1,000,000 for the building of each place, tho Bum realized would build 280,848, 002,110 orphan homes for each per son alive. If we bo ono or two short wo hopo each inhabitant of thoso 280,000,000, OOO.homos will forgivo us. London Tit'Bits. Rubber In Chewing Gum. Ordinary chewing gum is made of gum chiclo, sugar and a variety of flavors. Gum chiclo is merely a form of india rubber. Tho gum haa a certain quality of sugar added to it to sweeten and mako it palatable It will be noticed that in chewing gum after it has been in tho mouth awhile tho sugar and flavor aro en tirely gono, and what remains is tho rubborllko product, which is the chiclo gum nearly puro. This gum is tho sap of tho sapodilla, a Mexican tree. It is collected liko India rub ber sap, by cutting incisions in tho bark between tho months of Novem ber and April, and after tho gum has boon gathered it is packed in sacks, 200 pounds to tho sack. It is then a light colored mass, ap parently about half way botwoon gutta percha and india rubber. In tho factories it is washed, dried and mixed, and whon run off on spread ers is cut into sticks, wrapped and packed ready for shipment Within a few years tho industry has w Burned largo proportions and tho de mand for it seems to bo growing. Excliango. ' llalinc's Inipucuiiloalty. A book of anonymous authorship, entitled "An Englishman in Paris," contains n number of vory interest ing reminiscences of great Fronch, literary men. Of Balzac it is stated that whonovor ho was hard at work ho wont to roost "like tho fowls," as, ho himself put it, at 7 in tho oven ing. Ho was called at 1 in tho morn ing and wroto till 8; then took an other hour and a half of sleep; then after a light moal went to work again until 4 in tho afternoon; then ho took a bath, saw a few friendu, took perhaps a short walk and tin mediately after dinner went off to bed. "I shall bo compelled," ho wrote, "to load thl niggers' life for a few months without stopping in order not to be'swamped by those terrible billa that are due" and yet, a we all know, be wm always kard up for SALEM MARKETS. r V Wheat- 68Jo per bushel.
