New YoRK.August 11. The Her ald yesterday morning publishes the following dispatch from Professor Plckerlng.of tho Harvard colleRe as tronomical expedition to Peru: Arequipa, Peru, Aug. 10. In my observation of Mars I have seen two large areas near the equator which are peramently blue. Near tho edges they appear light 'blue Tho light Is slightly polarized. The total size of the area is about 600,000 square miles, one-half the Mediter ranean sea. June 23 a small dark spot appeared lu the southern snow cap. Later this spot lengthened ra pidly, and early in July It was 1000 miles long, dividing the snow in halt. Sixteen thousand square miles of snow have melted within thu last 30 days. The melted snow has ap parently been transferred to the seas across the laud. Bmull dark areas, surrounded by snow apneared Ju!j 10, and two days later I first saw a dark line lu the fork of a " Y"ehaped mark in the direction of the seas. The lino became more conspicuous July 14, and on the 10th a dark area, ibout the size of Lake Erie,appeared m tho northern side of the stem of the Y which was connected with he northern sea. The next day there ippcaicd a large,dark gray area near the not thern sea. This had grown much fainter by July 23, and a new area appeared to tne south or the northern sea, concealing Its outline, riieliue in thefoikof the Y had disappeared, but tho area of tho Y had extended. On July 24, a large dark area,apparently either a lake or sen, appeared near the melting snow, and ou July 25 the southern branch of the Y became very narrow. The outlines of the northern sea were seen against a narrow white line stretching north from the snow. Many other changes were noted, ru pldly changing falntish areas wero seen. Green areas near tho poles have not been seen for many weeks, but traces were recently susjweted, and a blight green urea was distinct ly seen near the north pole last uight. By a Mother's Curse. New York, Aug. 11. The sul cldo of Judge James C. Normile, of the bt. Louis criminal coutt, will af ford the superstitious a chance to speculate. Judge Normilu was prosecut-Ing-attomey at the trial of Walter H. The case was known as the trunk mystery and was noted throughout thu world. The parents of the murderer came from England, whore Brooks, sr., Is a school mas ter, and left no stono unturned to secure ills acquittal, out to no pur pose After tho execution It was r ported that Mrs. Brooks had called down a curse on the head of the trial judge, the prosecutor, and last ly Governor MoiehouBe, who refus ed to commute the sent nee. It Is Interesting now to recall the fact that Judge Van Wagner failed of a reelection, that Governor Morehouse, in a fit of dellruni, committed sui cide less than a year ago, and now tho prosecutor lu tho case has dltd by his own hand. Miss Josephine Dumont, tho Now York wnmau who presented the local Baptist church with many costly gifts, is i gain tho subject of discus sion among tho deacon of the church. Mies Dumont, having spent fre quent outings at Cheshire, because interested in tbe Baptist Society, to which ehe made from time to time, lare donations of money. She presented a beautiful Bible and some valuable plate for church ser vice, and recently the deacons object ed on the ground that, as Mls Du mont was accused of keeplug a house of 111 repute In New York, olfts from such a person could not be accepted with consistency by Christian church. The deacons were firm however, and declared that if the Bible and plato were retained thev would resign. As their desire was overru'ed. their resignations fol lowed, and were accepted. Now a new dilemma has risen, and nno which the deacons who refused to serve may look upon as a jutt re tribution for ecclesiastical greed.
