The governor yester day pardoned John V. Keenpy, who was sent from Baker county last December to servo a three years' term for larceny. The pardon was granted on the recommendation of the judge who sentenced him and the district attorney who prosecuted him. Incorporation. Articles of in corporation of the Granite and Green horn Consolidated Mining and Milling company, were filed in the olllce of the secretary yesterday by A. S. Tabor, Jos. N. Dltmars. and C. 8. Miller. The capital stock was fixed at $1,250,000. ANew Parsonage. It will be remembered that the Free Metho dist society lately purchased the old North Salem school building for a church, and they are now building a parsonage. Welsh Bros, have the contract, and will tush it up in good shape. This will place the society on a good footing in the capital city. A New Carrier. James M. Gilbert, who has recently beeu em ployed at Ed Jackson's, has been appointed to the position of mail carrier No. 3 in the Salem)po3toffice. He Is a native Salem boy, an indus trious young man, and will prove himself a good one for the place. Quarterly Meeting. Will be held at A. M. E. church, North Salem, to-morrow at the usual hour. HOLVERSON'S, 301 Commercial Street. A TRUSTY ESCAPES. A. D. Webster, a Ten Year Man From Coos County, Gone. Last evening, as the prisoners ot the peuiteutiary were being counted In to supper It was discovered that one mau was missing. On investi gation it was found that A. D. Web ster, a ten year con. from Wasco county, was the missing man, Webster was convicted from Coos county last October to servo ten years for manslaughter. He former ly lived at Albany. He has a wife aud has accumulated some property atBaudon, Coos county, where he has been keeping hotel. His crime was the killing of an employe with whom he quarreled. Ho is an old sailor, having served In the navy during the war. He was considered a "tough," bold, loud-mouthed man, yet not dangerous. Webster was made a trusty some mouths ago by the iniluenee of his friends,aud has since that time been at work in tho frout yard, looking after the ilower garden. It was not suspected that ho would take advan tage of his liberty, hut ho had not heard from his wife for some months and had grown ugly aud discontent ed, which is by some believed to be the cause of his departure. He never disobeyed the rules, but was considered a "kickei" among the employes. It is supposed that he has goue towards the coast in hopes of reaching a vessel. Webster is described by prison officials as being 01 years of age, 6 feet 0 Inches, weight 175 lbs, gray hair, blue eyes, sanguine complex ion, lie is an old nayy man, as shown by the India ink marks upon his body. On his left breast there is Christ on a cross, blue baud on right wrist, blue heart aud airows on in side right forearm, United States coat of arms on outside left forearm, slx-o'.nted star on back of left wrist, teu-poinled star on back of left hand. He has also a scar between the eyes. A reward of $50 is oflered for his capture. LIGHT FOR THE ASYLUM. A Separate Plant Needed Preper ations Being Made. It has Leen known for some time that there is not enough power un der the present arrangement to sup ply the asylum with sufficient electric light aud pumping force, so it has been decided to put in a sep uiate water wheel to cover this need completely. The water ditch will bo widened nearly ten feet for a distauce of over a mile, aud work will begin on Monday. Asylum employes will have charge of the work, assisted by the patients, and about fifty prisoners will bo put on tho work under guard. In this move Supt. Rowland Is planning to save the state great ex pense, for the asylum is inadequate ly lighted aud under the new arrangement better light can be secured at much les3 cost. Now the gas bill in winter months amounts to over $100, and the wards are nearly all dark. It Is propostd lo have teveral lights In each ward in tho future, which will be a great convenience mid greatly lessen danger. Tho new infirmary which is to be built will bo wired through out for light? aud supplied by this same power. The water works at the big farm are being rapidly completed under the superintendence of Engineer McCarl. Water Is brought from a big spring through 3 Inch mains, a distance of 0241 feet. It has a fall of 137 feet, aud aflords a pressure of CO pounds at the buildings. Reser voirs are now beiug built. A rock crusher is at work prepailng mater ial for the concrete to be used In the samo and much of the labor is being performed by patients. Tho Portland Oregouian gives the following amusing accouutof a lady expert, or canvatser, who was play lug the house-to-house sample test dodge in that city: Tho city for soveral days haB been cauvassed by a company of women who have culled at private residences for tho ostensible purpose of ex plaining the superior merits of their baking powder through o series of aiiegeu cuemical experiments, a lady who has been annoyed by the agents determined to test the effi cacy of the experiments, and she brought out some of the baking powder which they are advertising. The agent submitted the substance to the usual tests und called the laJy'a attention to the presence of alum, ammonia and various other alleged Ingredients, which could be distinguished by tho peculiar odor, the residum, etc. The lady of course saw all these unmistakpble signs of so-called impurities, and allowed the agent full swing to exp-uid upon the merits of her own cooking powder. The agent finally Inquired of the lady wnat brand of baking powder she hud been experimpiitiug with. "That baking powder." replied the lady, "is the same that you have beeu cracking up so high." Tho agent turned all colors, und beat a hasty retreat. Our informant has not been bothered w itu baking pow der agents since. LOCAL AMD PERSONAL. Private Secretary Munly is iu Ash land. Mrs. Anna Smart was brought to the asylum jtsterday, from Port- laud. MissOllio Larson went to Port land today to visit for a short time with her aunt. Charles Smith, the hardware mer chant, went to Portland today to spend Sunday. Fred Baker left today for Tacoma after a short visit at home. Gen. W. II. Byars was up from Portland today. Ed. F. Parkhurst was about to day ou crutches, for the firet time since injuring his ankle. His pet is much improved, but is still a great inconvenience. G. A. Webb, Silverton's chief of police, was a Portland visitor yester day. Chenile stand and table covers the latest designs, at The Palace. Mrs. Amos Strong arrived from Gearhart last evening to attend tho funeral of her brother, John Westa cott, L. A. Davidson, H. A. Thomas, E. H. Flagg, Harry Downing, W. H. Osburn, R. J. Fleming mid oth ers of the fraternity will drive over to Independence this evening to in stitute a lodge of Woodmen of the World. Dr. J. W. McAfee has gone to the mountains for about two weeks rec reation, and lias left his practice in charge of Dr. F. M. Brooks until he returns. Suryeyor Cul ver has beeu busy today, posting the law about planking bridges before passing over them with steam en glues. This is a very importantlaw, as these heavy engines frequently do great damage to the bridges, and in fact, it is believed by some that this precaution on the Lablsh bridge would have saved the wreck a few days ago. Badly Hurt. This moruing W. D. Taylor who is working for Geo. Croisau was considerably shook up. He was hauling hay,when tho bind ing pole broke and threw him to the ground. His face was badly Bcarred up and it is believed that one arm Is brokeu at the wrist. Large Yield. B. Pearson of Marion, was iu tho city this morn ing, aud showed a stool of wheat containing 48 heads, all from one kernel of seed. Probate Court. In the probate court the following proceedings were had: Iu tho matter of Geo. Woolen, de ceased, S. T. Ilobart uppointed ad ministiator, aud his bond was ap proved iu the sum of $12,000, with S. T. Hobart, H. S. Van Valkeu burgand Julia Woolen as sureties. Geo. Hall, Abraham Mosler and David Brodio were appointed ap praisers. Martho J. Hall, administratrix of the estate of De Witt C. Hall, de ceased, filed her bond in the sum of 54000 withW.T. Hall, aud J. G. Mosher as sureties. The Loud was approved. Henry Kline, J. O. Phelps and John Morley were ap pointed appraisers. They Tako Possession of a Town in Indiana. Star City, lud., July 30. Five hundred Italian laboreis oniployed In laying pipes betweeu tho gas fields and Chicago quit their camp Thursday nudtook possession of this town. Stones and sticks were thrown through tho windows ot houses aud stores, aud the little com munity was completely terrorized, For half a day they paraded the streets defying the authorities,break ing windows and tearing down fences. Tho two saloons In the place were brokeu into and cleaned out, tho desperadoes drinking all tho li quor they could find and rolling the barrels out ou tho streets and de molishing bottles and glasses. Going to the railroad depot, tho rioters rob bed tho office of what money it con tained, aud assaulted H. B. Stanton, tho agent, in a horrible mauner. Af ter beating him nearly to death, they dragged him out upon the stieet etripped him of ills clotbiug aud suspended hint by his arms to a tree. Ho was rescued almost an hour later in au exhausted condition, aud may die. Whon uight fell the people of tho village abandoned their homes and fled from the place to the sur rounding towns whero they could get protectlou. Tho rioters are still In control, aud have secuied whisky from other places, aud the bcenesaro beiug ro-cnacted except that tho fighting is among tho rioters, as the citizens have not dared to leturn to their homes. Tho sheriff lias en deavored to restore order, but the people are in such fear of the desper adoes that they refuse to obey his summons, and he is powerless.
