If a man cam his living by tho sweat of his brain ho must, if ho wishes to live long, maintain his health by tho sweat of hi3 brow that is, ho must in somo form or other take muscular exercise. Tho diet ltid down ns suitable for sum mor would in thatcaso of course almost universally nmrty. Tho most bui.ablo articles for hot weather aro ibh, such kiuda of meat as fowls and gamo, gram vegetables, salads and frill t. Farinaceous food that is, Btarches should bo taken in tho very Binallest qttnutity only. Sufficient sugar would bo found iu tho different fruits that tho season of tho year produces, and therefore should not bo supplemented. In tho caso of a man of ordinary size, doing ordinary physical or mental work, tho following would represent an ordi nary day's food for hot weather as far as quantity and constituents aro con cen cerned: Breakfast Two cups of tea or coffee, sweetened with saccharino, ono or two teaspoonfuls of cream in each, ono ounce of dry toast, thinly buttered; four ounces of grilled or boiled ii3h, such as plaice, solo, whiting, haddock, cod or trout, or four ounces of cold chicken, cold tonguo or grilled steak or chop. Lunch Two or threo ounces of cold mutton, beef or lamb; threo or four ounces of green vegetables plainly boil ed; plenty of green salad, mado with vinegar, but without oil; four or flvo ounces of Btowed fruit; water, or two or threo glasses of puro dry Mosollo or othor Rhino wines. Afternoon tea, if desired Two cups of tea, as nt breakfast, nothing to cat. Dinner Julionuo, or clear vegetable soup; three or four ounces of fish; threo or four ounces of tiny red meat, or chicken, rabbit, gamo or venison; six ouuees of nny green vegetable, with gravy from tho meat only; four ounces of Btowed fruit or of raw frui; n little Btalo or pulled bread and a small piece of chceso. This diot may bo varied as to hour, but threo meals only should bo eaten daily, aud only sufficient nt each meal to satisfy tho nppotlto. Fruit may, however, bo taken nt proper times, and, although it is much uioro popular now as a food than it used to be, it is only boneficial in moderate quantity. More flnid is, of course, necessary in hot weather than in cold, and so long ns It is a harmless fluid Dr. Nokcs questions whether too much can bo taken. Fluid in this way is to the kidneys what fresh air is to tho lungs, nnd tho wasto of meat not used in the system is carried off by its aid. A meat diet is healthy and lifo prolonging if supplemented with plonty of fluid to carry off its wnste. That fluid should be taken iu largo quantities in tho sum mer is a wiso provision of nature, as the Bkin carries off a largo amount of waste from tho system, and therefore its ao itvity should bo stimulated in every way, and it is most desirablo by fte quent baths to keop tho pores opon. In tho summor acidulated drinks aro the most grateful to tho palate. There can bo no doubt that tho most rofresking bovorago in summor, and cortainly tho most harmless, is tho properly mado cup of tea. In every well appointed housohold dinner is tho most important moal of tho day, but a fashion in regard to this has latoly crept into uso which is neither physiologically correct nor conducive to its enjoyment. I refor to tho custom now prevalent of commencing dinnor with somo Michovy toast, caviaro, or sardinos on bread and butter, or somo other pavory of a like nature Tho propor commencement of dinnor should bo tho old fashionod dish of good soup and for this roason that it is necessary that tho first food taken at dinnor should bo quickly absorbod, so us to stimulate tho nervous Bystom and givo tono to tho stomach. In this way tho nppctito is stimulated and tho sense of tasto made moro keon. Nothing act so boneflcially for this purposo as a small quantity of good soup. The moro important adjuncts aro, of courso, pleas ant surroundings nnd choorf ul compan ionship. Dr. Nokcs in Gontloman's Magazine. Ulectrto Oxford. Oxford having tnkou unto hersolf a tramway, und survived what many of her inhabitant:) regarded as un act of tho direst profanation, is about to givo further proefs of her roadinoss to movo with tho times by tho adoption of tho electric light in her thoroughfares and public buildings. Tho compactness of Oxford londs itsolf admirably to tho pnrpoho, for although tho compulsory urea laid down in tho provisional order granted by tho board of trado is only a quarter of a mile square, it comprises 13 colleges, 80 publio buildings and churches, 0 hotels and U10 shops, offices and privato houses. Tho promoters of tho schomo, who nro chiefly lpcal people both .town nud gown being represented on tho director ate of tho compuuy aro to bo con gratulated on tho opportuneness of the date chobcn for tho inauguration of tho new system. By tho evo of "commem." Oxford will huvo exchanged her old lamps for now, and the guy undergradu nto nnd Ills lovely women folk will foot it iu tho corn oxchaugo beneath the ra diant beams of tho uow illmnlnant.- London Ulobe, Highest of all in Leavening Power. Few persona in this world aro jailed upon to suffer more or bo moro embarrassed on many occasions and it tho loast opportune times than those afflicted with absentminded aess. Thoroisno politician in this jtato who does not kn ow Judgo Austin A. He is tho most for getful of men, and the tricks that his Infirmity havo played upon him would fill a volume. Hero is ene: He canio down here not a groat whilo ago and visited a theater where a most emotional, sensational and affecting melodrama was in prog ress.' Ho had a friend with him, and ho laid down a twenty dollar bill at tho box offlco to purchase two tick ets. Tho man behind tho littlo holo tossed tho pasteboards out and seven teen dollars in change. Intent on what ho was going to seo, tho judgo vory naturally seized tho tickets and wont on his way rejoicing, leaving tho balance of the twenty dollar bill bohind. Ho and his friend had seats In tho midst of a remarkably Bolect company, tho play was enjoyable, and tho judgo, who is nothing if not earnest, sat thero spollbound. At last tho villain in tho play said to ono of his partners in crimo, and with a hard look applicable to tho etage: ' 'How much money does tho wretch want?" Tho word "money" brought tho judge's thoughts back to tho box offlco and to tho cliango ho had loft lying thero. Forgetting whore ho was and thinking for tho instant that tho question had been applied to him, ho slapped his knoo and fair ly Bheuted: "Seventeen dollars, by the Lord Harry l" The effect on tho audience can bo Imagined, but noyer described, and nothing can induce that villain to ro cito lines wherein monoy appears, for with all an aotor's superstition ho imagines that the judge's inop portune, although pat, remark has ?'ven him bad luck forevor. A weakness for observation and a natural lilting for philosophical re flection incited a young man who resides in Brooklyn and labors in Now York to talk to a f riond in this fashien: "Did you ever observe tho Brooklyn bridgo trafllo in tho busy hours morning and ovoning? Yes? Woll, thon, you must havo boon im pressed with tho fact that each crowdod train moyes enough persons from ono side of tho river to tho othor to mako a good sized village. Tho trains aro packed early in tho morning nnd botweon 5 nnd 7:30 o'clock at night. Each train carries botweon COO and 700 passengers. Now a country village with that numbor of inhabitants thinks vory well of itsolf. It has threo or four churches, a library, an opera house, and is clamoring at tho postofflco department in Washington for a now postofflco. And yot tho restless cable that stretches across the bridgo yanks theso villages back and forth at tho rate of twonty-fivo or thirty an hour. I toll you this is a moving ago in which wo live."
