The tern jiorury rules reported by the nation al commltte provide that only the , delegates present should vote, It was objected that this would disfran chise distant stntes, and after a sharp fight the rules were amended to allow delegates present to cast the entire vole of iho state. Among tho members on the plat form committee were the follewing: Tdabo, A. M. Clark; Oregon, E. Bailey: Wushlngton, D. G. Strong. Tho new national committee, which immediately re elected Bamtie Dickie chairman, is In part as fal fal eows: Oregon, Mrs. N. S. Dygcit I. H, Amos; Washington, E. B Sutton. D. G. Strong. The honors of permanent oritnnl zatlon aro hotly contested. The fir ballot for chairmanship gave 13 Hitter, of Indianapolis, eighteen votes, A. A. Stcveuton, of 1mih1 vuuia, eleven, remainder scatter! up. On the second ballot Hitter received twenty-four and was elected. Rev Samuel Bmall, of Georgia, was elected permanent secretary. The committee on permanent or gunizatlon reported a rulo glvlup states votes only for tho delegate present. This was a signal for i tight. Discussion lasted nearly an hour. The mojorlty report wus finally adopted. The convention then adjourned till 8 p. m, At tho opening of tho evening session Col. A permanent organization has been effected with Ell Hitter, ol Indiana, as piesldlng oillcer, and Sam Small, of Georgia, evangelic, as secretary, and today tho con vention will bo ready to pass upon a platform and nominate candidates. In a general way Bidwell, of Cali fornia, teems to have the lend for the presidential nomination, while Demerest, of New York, Is hurdlj so prominent. Judge McCullough, of Illinois, gained a great deal ol ground during the day. The pro ceedings before the plutfoim com mittee show thoro is a decided feel ing in favor of tho Prohibitionists taking strong and advanced grounds ou various public questions other than prohibition. New Yorkers opposed Demerest they decided not to present Buscomns but vote for Bidwell. It is claimed Bidwell will receive three-fourths of Demcrestsown delegation. San ANroNiA, Tex., June 30. Alpine Is a small town on Hie Southern Pacific, 100 miles east of hero. Yesterday morning Jord in Bennett and John Good exchanged s lots. Bennett was taken to the ho t I and will die. Good wus cairied to jail and will recover. The cir cumstances are these: Bennett and Mis-s Josle Darllug, a beautiful girl, came here Tuasday aud wanted a marriage license. It was refused on account of the youth of the bride. The couple had resource to the clerk of an adjoining county, got the li cense, returned here, aud were mar ried in the afternoon. Good is a friend of tho Darllug family. He met the couple as they came out of tne hotel yesterday morning, and remarked: "Well Josle, you have got a mou at last?', The bridegroom reached for his hip pocket,andGood, who Is an old-timer, readied for his boot. But oue shot was exchanged. Good Is quite elderly, but he Is said to have been an ardent suitor of the girl. Ho argued that history should bo pre sented to the pupil in tho first grade, not in that heavy way in which It is presented to older Blu-' dents, but in such a manner as to render the pupil a good student of histoiy. Ho held that the teacher should give his classes specific in struct Uiiih about tho study of the subject, so that they can do then work In a systematic manner. Ho urged tho importance of tho study of chronology, not for tho sake of getting all dates fixed in mind, but to give the pupil a comprehensive Idea of tho oiderof historic occur rences. Mis. Wilson, pastor of the First Presby terian church In this city Tuesday night was given twenty-four hours to leave town. Wilson owns a twen ty acre vineyard sixteen miles north of Visalla occupied by a tenant named Miller, who has two daugh fers,ugfcd 7 and 0 years. Wilson wus In tho habit of taking the girls rid ing In a buggy and on several oc casions took undue liberties with them. Tuesday the father of the children came to town to kill Wil son, but was persuaded not to do so by deacons of the church. Wilson acknowledges his guilt. He Is over 70 years of age, and wus heretofore greatly esteemed. He left town last eveulug, leaving his family behind. A Young Lady Swindled. OakIjVND, Cal., June 30. In the case of Mrs. Mary Martin, chaiged with defrauding a Miss Leonard out of $14,000, the jury .returned a ver diet of guilty. The case attracted much attention. Miss Leonard, a young lady from New York slate, claimed that Mrs. Martin had ob tained such control over her will that she was virtvully compelled to do as she chose. The testimony was of the most sensational character and indicated a deliberate plan to swindle. Shot Through the Heart. Dbnison, Tex., June 30. E W. Harris, editor of tho Greenville Her ald, while with his brother yesterday, met Dr. Y. K. Yowell,lato of Green ville, on the road, with Detective D. H. Davis. Ou seeing the Harris brothers, Dr. Yoweil llred at them twice and then ran. E W. Hatris took a careful sight along his Win chester at the fleeing figure aud shot Dr. Yoweil dead with a bullet through the heart. It is alleged thai Yoweil was ruining Harris' home. Shot and Killed by a Policeman. San Fhancisco, June 30. Ro bert Kiiliu, a young plasterer, was shot and killed yesterday by Police Oillcer Edward J. Thompson. Kir llu resisted when the oillcer placed him uniler arrest for drunkenness, and attempted to stab the police man witli an immense bowio knife. He wus shot just over the hoart, and died hilfau hour later. Old Man Killed by Hogs. St. Mauv's, O., Juno 30.-Clork Stewart, aged 02, the oldest resident hi Miami county, was attacked yes terday by hogs when walking through tho barnyard, and killed.
