embraced her, forgetting that his
hands and clothes wero all smeared

Of course the lady's dross was
spoiled, but Charles had recognized

other people, and his eyes being thus

degrading occupation. Nevertheless,
during his absence from business,

Tho horso power of a whale has
been made a subject of study by the
eminent anatomist, Sir William Tur
ner, of the University of Edinburgh,
Scotland, in conjunction with tho
equally eminent Glasgow shipbuilder,
John Henderson. Tho size and di
mensions of a great finner stranded
several yeais ago on tho shore at
Longriddy furnished tho necessary
data for a computation of tho power
necessary to propel it at a speed of
twelve miles an hour. This whale
measured eighty feet in length,
twenty feet across at tho flanges of
tho tail, and weighed seventy-four
tons. To attain a speed of twelve
miles per hour it was calculated that
145 horso power was necessary. San
