This stump oflers another clue. It
is heated about 35 or -10 feet from

eral gallons of water. After Mamii
was killed, her murderer washed he
body and her clothing. There wm
no water to be bad at the time in tin
immediate vicinity, and this puzzled

coroner's Inquest Saturday afteruoou
as to tuecau.eor the collision, a num
ber of railroad employes were exam
ined, and among those who had been
in a position to note the block signal
at the fiteelton to wer.several declared
that the signal light displayed in
dicated Hint the teond section could
safely proceed. H. T. Hayes, the
operator at Steelton tower, when
placed on the stand, admitted that
ha had given the signal to the train
to proceed, without having received
notice from the Dock-street block
'stitlon beyond that llio block was
clear. Ho said he tried several times
to communicate witli Dock street, to
see, if the first section had passed
that point, but the wire was "open"
and he could not get them. He then
concluded that sufficient time had
elapsed for the Hist section to pass oil"
the block, nnd after a brief discussion
of the subject with a young man
who was learning the business in
the olllce, he gave the signal permit
ting section two to proceed. Hf
knew tills was violating the com
pany's orders, but said he wanted to
save the company time and money
by avoiding tho delay of tlio train.
He also admitted that having com
pany In his olllne was a violation of
the rules. The youug man complete
ly broke down during tho examina
tion and wept like a child. Tho tes
timony of other employes showed
they had all carefully and properly
performed their duties.
The coroner's jury decided to com
mit Hayes. Upon this announce
ment being made, Hayes began sob
bing aud appealing for mercy. "For
God's sako don't put me In Jail," lie
said, "it will kill my dear old moth
er." Ho was taken to jail, and his
cries could bo heard outside tho wall.
The jury did not render n verdict.
Additional evidence will bo taken to
day. Hayes, who is 22 years old,had
been in tho employ of tho company
about a year, but worked at Steelton
for the first time that night.

Mandamus Writ Made Mandatory
on Board.
Portland, June27. Judge Shat
tuck rendered a decision in the cae
of Powell Reeves against the State
lioard of Medical Examiners. Tbt
action was a writ of mandamus
sworn out by Reeves to compel the
board to i.-sue him a license to prac
tlce medicine. The .recently pass
ed stato law on this subject provid
ed for an examination of all candi
dates for practitioner's licenses, but
provided also that those already en
gutjed in tho practice of medicine
within the state might, by making
application to tho state board with
in a stated time, uud by pacing the
registration fee, $1, receive a license
Upon the hearing of the case this
was tho only Issue raised, and Reeves
had, in the opinion of the court,
duly established the fact of the resi
deuo3 and his tender of the fee.
Judge Shattuck thereupon made the
writ mandatory, which is lu eflect
to compel tho board to issue Reeves
a license.
